Mamie Mills Burris

ALBEMARLE — The funeral was to be this afternoon for Mamie Mills Burris, 84, 134-B N. Fourth St., who died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 3, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Burris was a daughter of the late Jack Walter and Ida Elizabeth Burleson Mills. A member of Hammer Creek Baptist Church, she had worked at Wiscassett Mills.

Her husband, John Wade Burris, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Harold Wade “Sprinky” Burris, Albemarle; daughter Patricia Archer, Albemarle; brothers Roy V. Mills, Aiken, S.C., and R.W. “Dick” Mills, Albemarle; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were to be held at 2 p.m. today at Fairview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Paul J. Bell and Dr. Gary Pinion officiating.

The family will be at the home of her son “Sprinkly” Burris, 46460 Scenic Drive.

Hartsell Funeral Home was in charge.

Jayson ‘Paco’ Crawford

MOORESVILLE — Jayson “Paco” Michael Crawford, 16, South Magnolia Street, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000).

Born Feb. 22, 1983, the youth attended Mooresville Senior High School, where he was on the football, baseball and wrestling teams. He had been employed by Mooresville Ford-Mercury Service Center and was a member of Mooresville ARPChurch.

Survivors include his mother, Cheryl Coggins Crawford, and friend, Bob Stryczynski, Mooresville; father Ralph Harrison Crawford and his wife, Sherry, of Sherrills Ford; sisters Jennifer Crawford, Mooresville, and Sherry McDowell, Rutherfordton; and brother Shannon Crawford, Rutherfordton.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Mooresville ARPChurch, conducted by the Rev. Gerald R. Hallman and the Rev. Paul Schronce. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday,Cavin Funeral Home.

‘Larry’ Goodnight

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Lawrence G. “Larry”Goodnight, 78, 811 E. 22nd St., who died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several months of declining health.

Born Feb. 26, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodnight was a son of the late William Henry and Maude Patterson Goodnight. He retired in 1986 after many years of employment with Cannon Mills Plant 1, Distribution Department.

A member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, he was active in various church activities throughout the years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of VFWPoston-Perkins Post 8989.

Survivors include wife Viola “Bobbie” Combs Goodnight; brother James Goodnight, Salisbury; and sister Juanita Alexander, China Grove.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Leon Hawks and the Rev. Coy Prevette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park with military rites by D.A.V. Chapter 27.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on East 22ndStreet.

Reggie Lee Goss

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Reggie Lee Goss, 72, Murchison Road, who died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 10, 1927, in Ashe County, W.Va., Mr. Goss was a son of the late Leonard and Nannie Taylor Goss. A driver, he retired after 25 years from Pilot Freight. For the last decade, he worked in the parts department at All American Ford.

He was a member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Yadkinville, where he was a trustee and a past president of the United Methodist Men. He was a member and past lodgemaster of Farmington Masonic Lodge. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Don Nell AllenGoss; daughters Patsy L. Goss, Mocksville, and Linda G. Barton, King; sisters Pauline Smith, Opal Hutchens and Ruth Sizemore, all of Yadkinville, and Lannie Pugh, Macon, Ga.; brother Roy Goss, East Bend; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Foster. Burial, Mount Olive United Methodist Church cemetery, Yadkinville. Graveside rites by Farmington Masonic Lodge.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Marcia Jervette Hasty

COLUMBIA, Md. — Marcia Jervette Hasty, 40, 9652 Hinston Downs, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at University Hospital, Baltimore, Md., after a period of declining health.

Born July 2, 1959, in Salisbury, Ms. Hasty was a daughter of Constance Hasty, Salisbury, N.C., and Edmond Hasty, Detroit Mich. She was a graduate of Page High School, Greensboro, N.C., and Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C. She was employed by the Department of Higher Education of Maryland in Annapolis. She was a member of Mount Pisgah AME ZionChurch and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include son Demetrois Hasty, Columbia; brother Edmond Hasty, Salisbury, N.C.; and sisters Cheryl Smith, Raleigh, N.C., Faith Waldrum, Columbia, Sheena Walker and Amelia Godfrey, both of Salisbury, N.C., and Kellery Petty, Nina Hasty and Bridgette Blair, all of Detroit, Mich.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, N.C., is in charge.

 

Harry Lee Henderson

Harry Lee Henderson, 67, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at W.G. “Bill” Hefner VAMedical Center after a month of serious illness.

Born May 13, 1932, in Rowan County, Mr. Henderson was a son of Rosa Morgan Henderson, Salisbury, and the late Worth Henderson. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and the U.S. Navy schools.

Retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years, he was a veteran of the Korean War. He later retired from the U.S. Post Office after 23 years and had been a member of Fleet Reserve for 10 years. A Methodist, he was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Carolyn Snead Henderson, whom he married Jan. 23, 1954; daughters Laura Henderson Lutz, Cleveland, and Marsha Henderson Miller, Salisbury; brother Ray Homer Henderson, Henderson, Ky.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Entombment, 2 p.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park’s Chapel in the Pines Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Bill Ragsdale, pastor, Main Street United Methodist Church. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly FuneralHome. At other times the family will be at the home.

Robert Hogsed

Robert Hogsed, 50, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Jimmy Lambert

ALBEMARLE — Jimmy Lambert, 62, 25101 Odell Drive, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) in Mount Pleasant.

Born July 22, 1937, in Stanly County, Mr. Lambert was a son of the late Matthew Marion and Annabelle Burleson Lambert. A member of Light House Baptist Church, he had been employed as a multi-skill technician with Michelin Aircraft Tire Corp.

His wife, Brenda Sue Lambert, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Danny Lambert, Albemarle; brother Robert Lambert, Concord; sister Maxine Watkins, Falls Church, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Clinton Efird. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Odell Drive.

James E. ‘Jim’ Mercer

ALBEMARLE — The funeral will be Saturday for James E. “Jim”Mercer, 88, 940 N. Fifth St., who died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at Britthaven of the Piedmont.

Born July 9, 1911, in Lumberton, Mr. Mercer was a son of the late Nash Adams and Mary Elvira Young Mercer. He had been a poultry farm manager with All Star Farms. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Mildred Wilson Mercer; son James E. Mercer Jr., Raleigh; daughter Ann Wilson Mercer, Belmont; brothers Miles Edwin and David C. Mercer, both of Lumberton, Charles H.Mercer, Lake Junaluska, Robert Mercer, St. Augustine, Fla., and Eugene Mercer, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters Elizabeth M. Randall, Charlotte, and Mary M. Baxley and Ruth M. Muselwhite, both of Lumberton; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Stanly Gardens of Memory, conducted by Dr. David M. Rorie and the Rev. Billy Rintz.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home on North Fifth Street.

Beulah Linker Peeler, 100

Beulah Linker Peeler, 100, a Salisbury native, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) in Springfield, Mass., where she had resided since 1976.

She had worked as a bookkeeper for General Motors Corp. for 40 years.

Her husband,Walter H. Peeler, died in 1969, and a daughter, Alice Olson, died in 1997.

Survivors include five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mary Peters, associate pastor, St. John’s Lutheran Church. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Bertie Morton Pinion

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Bertie Morton Pinion, 52, a Stanly County, N.C., native, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at her home.

Born March 11, 1947, Mrs. Pinion was a daughter of Pauline Morton, Albemarle, N.C., and the late Billie W. Morton.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband HenryD. Pinion; daughter Wendy G. Pinion, New Albany; brothers Lonnie R., Jerry W. and Johnny L. Morton, all of Albemarle, N.C.; and sister Evelyn Adams, Albemarle, N.C.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel,Albemarle, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Ralph Rummage.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Eddie Dean Shankle

NORWOOD — Eddie Dean Shankle, 65, 13209 Lefler Road, father of Patricia D. Shankle, Albemarle, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Ella Mae Stirewalt

ROCKWELL — Ella Mae Stirewalt, 89, The Meadows Retirement Center of Rockwell, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the retirement center after a number of years of declining health.

Born Dec. 27, 1910, in Rowan County, Miss Stirewalt was a daughter of the late John L. and Florence Shive Stirewalt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she retired from Cannon Mills, China Grove. She was a lifelong member of Organ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, OrganLutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.
