Marshall ‘Ed’ Atkinson

ALBEMARLE — Marshall Edward “Ed” Atkinson, 74, 36158 Ridge St., died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Atkinson was a son of the late Willie and Annie Atkinson and the foster son of the late Gilliam and Emma Coble. He had been a self-employed auto mechanic.

A veteran of the U.S. Marines, he served in the Korean War. He was a Primitive Baptist.

A son, Marshall E. Atkinson Jr., died in 1950, and a daughter, Tammy Renee Atkinson, died in November 1999.

Survivors include wife Maggie Ann Hathcock Atkinson; son Eddie James Atkinson, Albemarle; daughter Marcia Annette Atkinson Tucker, Albemarle; brother Bill Atkinson, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 9:30 a.m.Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by Elder Ted Morton. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: No formal visitation. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family will be at the home onRidge Street.

 

Howard Wesley Brown

GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Wednesday for Howard Wesley Brown, 78, Granite Quarry, who died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 26, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Robert Maxwell and Grace Miller Brown. A 1938 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was primary stockholder and president of Brown SupplyCo.

A lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, he had served as church treasurer, chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the administrative board. He was a charter member of the Granite Quarry Civitan Club.

A former mayor of Granite Quarry, he had also served on the Board of Aldermen. He was instrumental in implementing the Granite Quarry sewer system.

Survivors include wife Anne Thomas Brown, whom he married Sept. 17, 1939; son Howard W. Brown Jr., Granite Quarry; daughters Carol Brown Busby, Franklin, Tenn., Nancy Brown Trice, Signal Mountain, Tenn., Susan Brown Trivette, Salisbury, and Jan L. Brown, Sherrills Ford; brother Philip Brown, Granite Quarry; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Kay W. Gottula and the Rev. J. William Hoyle. The Granite Quarry Civitan Club will be seated as a group. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home.

Mathey Alfred Davis

Mathey Alfred Davis, 64, Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, after a period of declining health.

Born March 9, 1935, in Los Angeles, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Harris Monroe and Evelyn Lewis Davis. Educated in the Wadesboro schools and at East Carolina University, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Davis had worked for 30 years with the Division of Community Assistance for the state of North Carolina. He was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and VFWPost 3006.

His wife, Lynne Chambers Davis, died March 28, 1986.

Survivors include daughters Chere Davis, Salisbury, Kelly Davis, Raleigh, and Kathleen Osborne,Mocksville; brother Jad A. Davis, Belmont; sister Dorothy D. Osborne, Asheboro; and one granddaughter.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Bullock. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: None. A reception will be held after the service, 3-5 p.m., at Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post. At other times the family will be at the home.

Reggie Lee Goss

MOCKSVILLE —Reggie Lee Goss, Murchison Road, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Faye Harrington Griffin

ALBEMARLE —

Born March 3, 1910, in Union County, Mrs. Griffin was a daughter of the late Henry Ray and Mary Fanny Swink Harrington. A homemaker, she was a member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, New Salem.

Survivors include sons Billy E. Griffin, Albemarle, and Joe T. Griffin, Oakboro; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Moriah UnitedMethodist Church, New Salem, conducted by the Rev. Everette Cooper and the Rev. Mike Roseman. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Joe Griffin, 912 Long St. Extension, Oakboro.

 

Vallie Simerson Hannah

The funeral will be Wednesday for Vallie Simerson Hannah, 86, Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after four months of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1914, in DavidsonCounty, Mrs. Hannah was a daughter of the late Curtis Baxter and Sallie Queen Simerson. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, the Fidelity Sunday School Class and the Joy Club.

Her husband, Fletcher “Bob” S. Hannah, diedJuly 22, 1967.

Survivors include sisters Mary Eller, Salisbury, and Bernice Smith, Altavista, Va.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, LyerlyFuneral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, Trading Ford Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Ralph Zeb Honeycutt

CHINA GROVE — Ralph Zeb Honeycutt, 82, 210 Sylvester Road, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

KANNAPOLIS — Ray Brown Long, 76, 906 Grace Ave., died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.

KANNAPOLIS — Marie Barnhardt Mills, 74, Kannapolis, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Della Donaldson Roberts

KANNAPOLIS — Della Mae Donaldson Roberts, 61, 1508 Longbow Drive, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at her home after five years of declining health.

Born July 26, 1938, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Roberts was a daughter of Irene Rodgers Donaldson, Kannapolis, and the late John Donaldson. A graduate of Cabarrus School of Nursing, she worked for 38 years as a registered nurse at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, now NorthEast Medical Center, Concord. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband James R. “Jim” Roberts; son James R. Roberts Jr., Kannapolis; daughter Rebecca Dawn Roberts, Macon, Ga.; brother Jake Donaldson, Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Longbow Drive.

Helen Helms Smith

NORWOOD — The funeral will be Friday for Helen Gay Helms Smith, 46, 12086 Old Aquadale Road, who died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at her home.

Born Aug. 19, 1953, in Stanly County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Minnie Helms Morgan of Oakboro. A member of Aquadale Baptist Church, she had worked as an electrician at Stanly Fixture Co.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Donnie WarrenSmith; sons Donnie Wayne Smith and Stacy Brown Smith, both of Norwood, and David Michael Smith, Oakboro; stepfather Melvin Morgan, Oakboro; brothers Charlie and Joe Helms, Albemarle, and Wayne Helms, Oakboro; sisters Flora Mae Coley, Norwood, Faye Hartsell, Albemarle, and Hilda Taylor, Oakboro; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Red Cross Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lowell Brown and the Rev. Garry Baker. Burial, church cemetery. At other times the family will be at the home of son Donnie Wayne Smith, 13039-B Highway 52 South.

William ‘Buck’ Still

The funeral will be Wednesday for WilliamJasper “Buck”Still, 54, 621 W. Fisher St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 9, 1945, in Rowan County, Mr. Still was a son of the late William Jasper and Julia Elizabeth Patterson Still. Educated at R.A. Clement High School, he had been employed by Cone Mills. He attended Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters.

Survivors include brother Charles Albert Still, of the home; and sister Fannie Still Johnson, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters, conducted by the Rev. D.S. Houston. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Lillian Efird Whitley

ALBEMARLE — Lillian Efird Whitley, 84, 24344 Highway 24/27, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Forrest Oakes Health Care Center.

Born June 23, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Whitley was a daughter of the late Willie A. and Mary Thompson Efird. A member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, she was formerly employed by Wiscassett Hosiery Mill Co.

Survivors include husband Fred H. Whitley; son Lloyd H. Whitley, Thomasville; daughter Luedith W. Underwood, Albemarle; brother William Efird, Albemarle; sister Eleanor Smith, Concord; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Hunter. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
