Marshall Edward Ed Atkinson, 74, 36158 Ridge St., died Monday (Jan. 31,
2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 13, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mr.
Atkinson was a son of the late Willie and Annie Atkinson and the foster son of the late
Gilliam and Emma Coble. He had been a self-employed auto mechanic.
A veteran of the U.S. Marines, he served in the
Korean War. He was a Primitive Baptist.
A son, Marshall E. Atkinson Jr., died in 1950, and
a daughter, Tammy Renee Atkinson, died in November 1999.
Survivors include wife Maggie Ann Hathcock
Atkinson; son Eddie James Atkinson, Albemarle; daughter Marcia Annette Atkinson Tucker,
Albemarle; brother Bill Atkinson, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

Howard Wesley Brown
GRANITE QUARRY The funeral will be
Wednesday for Howard Wesley Brown, 78, Granite Quarry, who died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at
Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 26, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Brown was
a son of the late Robert Maxwell and Grace Miller Brown. A 1938 graduate of Granite Quarry
High School, he was primary stockholder and president of Brown SupplyCo.
A lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist
Church, he had served as church treasurer, chairman of the board of trustees and chairman
of the administrative board. He was a charter member of the Granite Quarry Civitan Club.
A former mayor of Granite Quarry, he had also
served on the Board of Aldermen. He was instrumental in implementing the Granite Quarry
sewer system.
Survivors include wife Anne Thomas Brown, whom he
married Sept. 17, 1939; son Howard W. Brown Jr., Granite Quarry; daughters Carol Brown
Busby, Franklin, Tenn., Nancy Brown Trice, Signal Mountain, Tenn., Susan Brown Trivette,
Salisbury, and Jan L. Brown, Sherrills Ford; brother Philip Brown, Granite Quarry; 10
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Shiloh United
Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Kay W. Gottula and the Rev. J. William Hoyle. The
Granite Quarry Civitan Club will be seated as a group. Burial, church cemetery.

Mathey Alfred Davis
Mathey Alfred Davis, 64, Salisbury, died Monday
(Jan. 31, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, after a period of declining
health.
Born March 9, 1935, in Los Angeles, Mr. Davis was
a son of the late Harris Monroe and Evelyn Lewis Davis. Educated in the Wadesboro schools
and at East Carolina University, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Davis had worked for 30 years with the
Division of Community Assistance for the state of North Carolina. He was a member of
Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and VFWPost 3006.
His wife, Lynne Chambers Davis, died March 28,
1986.
Survivors include daughters Chere Davis,
Salisbury, Kelly Davis, Raleigh, and Kathleen Osborne,Mocksville; brother Jad A. Davis,
Belmont; sister Dorothy D. Osborne, Asheboro; and one granddaughter.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, National
Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Bullock. Military rites by Rowan County
Veterans Council.

Hannah, 86, Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after
four months of declining health and a month of serious illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1914, in DavidsonCounty, Mrs. Hannah
was a daughter of the late Curtis Baxter and Sallie Queen Simerson. Educated in the Rowan
County schools, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, the
Fidelity Sunday School Class and the Joy Club.
Her husband, Fletcher Bob S. Hannah,
diedJuly 22, 1967.

was a daughter of Irene Rodgers Donaldson, Kannapolis, and the late John Donaldson. A
graduate of Cabarrus School of Nursing, she worked for 38 years as a registered nurse at
Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, now NorthEast Medical Center, Concord. She was a member of
Central Baptist Church.

her home.
Born Aug. 19, 1953, in Stanly County, Mrs. Smith
was the daughter of Minnie Helms Morgan of Oakboro. A member of Aquadale Baptist Church,
she had worked as an electrician at Stanly Fixture Co.
