Odis Wayne Austin

KANNAPOLIS —Odis Wayne Austin, 70, 112 Tanglewood Drive, died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at his home.

Born July 14, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Austin was a son of the late Rosco R. and Bell Dwiggins Austin. Retired as a driver for Consolidated Freight Co., he was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Peggy Osborne Austin; daughter Blenda Galloway, Kannapolis; brother George W. Austin, China Grove; and a great-granddaughter.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Lakewood Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Howard. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Hazel Ross Chamberlaine

Hazel Ross Chamberlaine, 89, 203 Gold Hill Drive, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000)at her residence after a year of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1911, in Salisbury, Mrs. Chamberlaine was a daughter of the late Charles William and Laura Cauble Ross. Educated in the Faith schools, she was a former employee of Klumac Mills. Also a homemaker, she was a former member of Faith Baptist Church.

Her husband, Lee Carl Chamberlaine, died Aug. 6, 1976, and a daughter, Mary Frances Beaver, died Dec. 4, 1999.

Survivors include son Curtis Barringer, Salisbury; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Donald S. Wagner. Burial, Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery, Mocksville. The body will remain at the funeral home until taken to the cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the residence.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Joseph Dunn

CONCORD —Joseph Redden Dunn Jr., 57, 2882 Westfield Ave., died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after four months of serious illness.

He was the father of Lorrie Dunn Carriker, Kannapolis.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Lawson Whitson. Burial, West Concord Cemetery.

Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Lorrie Carriker, 213 Eddie Ave., Kannapolis.

Arthur M. McNeely

Arthur “Daddy Bill” M. McNeely, 89, Autumn Care Nursing Center, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two days of serious illness.

Born Dec. 8, 1911, in Rowan County, Mr. McNeely was a son of the late Rufus and Viola Cowan McNeely. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from Salisbury Marble &Granite Co.

Mr. McNeely was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Cubertson McNeely.

He is survived by a brother, Hubert McNeely, Washington, D.C.

Services:Noon on Tuesday, Thomas Street Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Latten, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 11:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday, at the church. At other times the family will be at 330 Hurley School Road.

Sarah Easley Plott

CONCORD — Sarah Frances Easley Plott, 76, formerly of First Assembly Living Center and Oakshade Avenue, Kannapolis, died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000)at Avante at Concord.

Born April 23, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Plott was a daughter of the late George R. and Faye Alexander Easley. Mrs. Plott was a homemaker.

Her husband, Bain Franklin Plott, died in 1977.

Survivors include daughter Karen Sides, Matthews; brother T.M. Easley, Brown Summitt; three grandchildren; and two-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolia, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Forbis Kivett.

Visitation:None.

Raymond Rucker

Raymond Rucker, 85, died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000)at the Hefner VA Medical Center after three years of serious illness.

Mr. Rucker was a son of the late Eldo and Leeo Baker Rucker. He was a former resident of Davie, Iredell and Rowan counties. Most of his life was spent on Long Island, N.Y., where he was a member of First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway.

Survivors include daughter Wynolia Hunt, Washington, D.C.; sisters Camilla Rucker, Winston-Salem, and Mary Young, Charlotte; brothers Artis Rucker, Hempstead, Claudell Rucker, St. Albans, N.Y., and John R. Rucker, Fort Washington, Md.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, Shiloh Baptist Church, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Everett Jenkins, and the Rev. Donald Jenkins. Burial, National Cemetery, Hefner VA Medical Center.

Visitation:7-8 p.m. Monday, Graham Funeral Home, Mocksville.

 

Johnny Leroy Young

Johnny Leroy Young died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000)at his home after three months of serious illness.

Born Feb. 10, 1928, in the community of Yadkin, Mr. Young was a son of the late Hugh Douglas and Elva Snider Young. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Catawba College and a master’s degree and a doctorate in French from the University of North Carolina. He continued post-graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris; the University of Lille; the University of Pau; and the University of North Carolina.

He was one of the first recipients in North Carolina of the Fulbright Award for a year’s study abroad; his year was spent in France. Dr. Young taught French and Spanish at the University of North Carolina, at Kentucky Wesleyan College and at Catawba College. He spent two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hubbard Young; daughters Joanne Young, Key West, Fla., Anita Young, Panama City, Fla., and Mary Paxton, Staunton, Va.; brother Hugh Douglas Young Jr., Burlington; and one grandson.

Services:Memorial, 2 p.m. Sunday, Catawba College Chapel.

Visitation:None. The body has been donated to the University of North Carolina’s School of Medicine at Chapel Hill.

Parks Junior Adams

ROCKWELL — Parks Junior Adams, 72, Rockwell, died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at his residence. He had been in declining health for four months.

Born July 12, 1928, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Lee Parks and Daisy Pickler Adams. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was the owner of Adams Body Shop for 30 years before he retired in 1981. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Son Kenneth Wayne Adams died in 1992 and daughter Brenda Faye Cranfield died in 1994.

Survivors include wife Nellie Ruth Shore Adams; sons Jimmy Adams, Rockwell, and Ronnie Adams, Faith; daughters Lynda Cranfield and Susie Shinn, both of Faith, Barbara Hall, Carol Gobble and Joyce Lovingood, all of Rockwell, and Betty Crowell, Salisbury; brother, Billy Ray Adams, Rockwell; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Powles Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Graham, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church, Salisbury. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

‘Pat’ Pharis Jordan

COOLEEMEE — Etheleen “Pat” Pharis Jordan, 70, Duke Street, died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Born Oct. 14, 1930, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jordan was the daughter of the late George and Ila Holbrook Pharis. She worked for Hoechst Celanese for 25 years.

Mrs. Jordan attended Victory Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Bowlettes League at Woodleaf Lanes.

Her husband, Jesse Lee “Jake” Jordan, died in 1972.

Survivors include daughters Jan. J. Coleman, Cooleemee, and Mary Susan Allen, Davenport, Iowa; brother Jerry W. Pharis, Albemarle; half brother, Gene Pharis, Thomasville; half sister, Essie Adams, Thomasville; and four grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Shelby Harbour. Burial, Legion Memorial Park.

Gladys Stewart Mize

STATESVILLE — Gladys Stewart Mize, 81, formerly of Fourth Street, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at Maple Leaf Health Care following a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Iredell County, Mrs. Mize was the daughter of the late John Bergen and Naomi Watts Stewart. A member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church, she had retired from the Avery Sherrill School cafeteria.

Her husband, John Ross Mize, died in 1993. A son, John Theodore Mize, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Roscoe S. Mize, China Grove; brother Bill Stewart, Lexington; sister Hazel Lane, Statesville; and three grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Nicholson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Carl Williams and the Rev. Frank Stewart. Burial, Iredell Memorial Gardens.

Ann Carter Rock

Ann Carter Rock of Salisbury died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Margaret O. Tucker

KANNAPOLIS — Margaret Overcash Tucker, 77, 203 Overcash Ave., died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Nov. 25, 1923, in Rowan County, Mrs. Tucker was the daughter of the late Chancel Edward and Lottie Rodgers Overcash. She had formerly worked in the Cannon Mills spinning room. She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, Ray Nathaniel Tucker, and a son, Harold Raymond Tucker, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Doris Elaine Tucker, Kannapolis; sons Larry Ray Tucker and Nathan Ralph Tucker, both of Kannapolis; sister Lottie Fortner, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services:2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gene Frady. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation:1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
