The unemployment rate in Rowan County dropped from 9.5 percent for October to 5.5 percent for November, while unemployment rates in 81 North Carolina counties rose during November, according to the latest figures from the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
When Rowan County’s rates jumped to 8.9 percent for September and 9.5 percent for October, Employment Security Commission officials said the figures were “inflated” by the short term claims filed by companies such as Freightliner and Pillowtex during short-term layoffs and plant idlings.
November is the first month in which Freightliner’s permanent layoffs figure.
The unemployment rates fell in 13 other counties and were unchanged in six counties. North Carolina’s statewide rate is 3.7 percent. State and county rates are not seasonally adjusted.
Swain County had the highest unemployment rate at 14.5 percent. Watauga and Orange counties had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in November at 1.3 percent.
