James P. Alexander

KANNAPOLIS —James P. Alexander, 77, 836 Richard Ave., died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, after one week of serious illness.

Born May 28, 1923, in Union County, Mr. Alexander was a son of the late Crawford and Odessa Pressley Alexander. Employed with China Grove Cotton Mill, he retired in 1985. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, and was actively involved as a scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster and volunteer for many years with the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include wife Colen Y. Alexander; daughter Kay A. Mainer, Concord; son Steve D. Alexander, Concord; brothers Ormond Alexander, Mount Pleasant, and Frank Alexander, Wadesboro; sister Margaret Deese, Indian Trail; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Midway United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rintz. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

L. Lynn Britton

LINWOOD —Lila Lynn Pollard Britton, 72, 9971 South N.C. Highway, Lot No. 1, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000)at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation for Lexington.

Born April 7, 1928, in Wayne County, Mich., Mrs. Britton was a daughter of the late Gladys Pollard. She was a homemaker and a member of Tyro United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband Clarence Robert “Bob” Britton, of the home; daughter Deborah Lynn Kossel, Grand Rapids, Mich.; stepdaughter Deborah Johnson, Appleton, Wis.; son Curtis A. Kossel, Beckley, W.Va.; stepsons Robert A. Britton, Vienna, Austria, and Kirk Britton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Lee Spearman, Gaylord, Mich.; brother William Pollard, Detroit, Mich.; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 8 p.m. Friday, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Chris Clontz.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Harold Craig Brown

MOORESVILLE — Harold Craig Brown, 44, of Corriher Grange Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000).

Born May 16, 1956, in Guilford County, Mr. Brown was a son of Cletus W. Brown, Mooresville, and the late Frances Williams Brown. He was a graduate of Mooresville High School and attended Davidson College. He was employed by Phillip Morris in Concord and was a member of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Tamara “Tammy” Troutman Brown, whom he married June 27, 1986; daughter Lauren Brooke Brown, of the home; brother Cletus W. Brown Jr., Dalzell, S.C.; sisters Belva Jean Smith, Greensboro, and Terry Brown Redmond, Quitman, Miss.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home.

Dorothy Shuford Buchanan

LEXINGTON — Dorothy Shuford Knotts Buchanan, 70, of Albert Drive, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1930, in Iredell County, Mrs. Buchanan was a daughter of the late Alexander and Rena Gray Shuford. She was educated in the Iredell County school system and was a retired employee of Wenoah Cotton Mill.

Survivors include daughters Patricia Ann Knotts Jordan, Welcome, and Kathy Louise Knotts Crump, Lexington; sisters Josephine Shuford and Elizabeth Shuford, both of New Rochelle, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church Village Drive, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Pettiford. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the church. The body may also be viewed 12-8 p.m. Friday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Carl A. Brown

ASHEBORO —Carl A. Brown, 94, 134 West Liberty St., died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000)at Randolph Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by a son, Ralph K. Brown, Salisbury.

Services:2 today, Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, conducted by the Rev. Dr. John S. Rogers. Burial, Randolph Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Venita Hosewick Carter

MOCKSVILLE —Venita Ann Hosewick Carter, 51, of Claude Ratledge Road, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.

Born April 13, 1949, in Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Carter was a son of the late Ann Hughes and Sidney Hosewick. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Richard Paul Carter; daughter Tammy Ann Strissel, Virginia Beach, and Chrissy Farmer, Chesapeake, Va.; brothers Johnny Felts and Billy Felts, both of Norfolk, Va.; sisters Tina Felts, Gina Felts and Nina Morris, all of Norfolk, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Eaton Funeral Home. The body will be cremated.

 

Rhonda Griffin Coble

OAKBORO — Rhonda Griffin Coble, 46, 311 Hamilton Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000)at her residence.

Born Jan. 18, 1954, in Stanly County, Miss Coble was a daughter of Willie G. and Lela Griffin Coble, both of the home. A graduate of West Stanly High School, Oakboro, she was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem. She was an admitting officer for Carolina Medical Center, Charlotte, and was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Oakboro.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brothers Rex Coble, of the home, and David Coble, High Point; sister Jean C. Jackson, Oakboro; and paternal grandmother Robena Coble, Oakboro.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Oakboro, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Searles, pastor, and the Rev. J.N. Coble. Burial, Oakboro City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the church.

Thomas ‘Tobe’ Hawkins

CONCORD — Thomas ‘Tobe’ Hawkins, 97, formerly of 138 Lore St., died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000)at Avante Nursing Center.

Born Dec. 11, 1903, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Hawkins was a son of the late Albert and Katie Misenheimer Hawkins. He ran a neighborhood store in his community and was known throughout the community and city.

Survivors include daughter Willie Mae Lynch, Landis; sister Estelle B. Kiser, Concord; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mount Olive Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. Donna White Cook, pastor. Burial, Rutherford Memorial Park.

Visitation:Wake, 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at 220 Logan Ave., Concord.

Mary Ellen Click Myers, 77, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at her residence.

Layvenis Smith

GREENSBORO — Layvenis Smith, 63, 2001 South Benbow Road, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Moses Cone Medical Center.

Born Feb. 2, 1937, in Stanly County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Raymond and Correna Kendall Smith. Agraduate of Kingville High School, Albemarle, he retired from North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, where for 35 years he was a custodian.

Survivors include sisters Dorothy S. Lightford, Greensboro, Raenorris S. Mason, West Hyattsville, Md., and Carrena M. Murphy, Fort Washington, Md.

Danny B. Stone

BERRYVILLE, Va. —Danny B. Stone, 44, 6930 Lord Fairfax Highway, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000)at Northern Virginia Hospice.

Born Oct. 16, 1956, in Salisbury, N.C., Mr. Stone was a son of Edward Stone, Salisbury, and the late Peggy Morris Stone. He was a customer service representative for United Airlines at Dulles International Airport.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include stepmother Delia Conrad Stone, Salisbury; brothers Eddie Stone, Faith, N.C., and Mark Stone, Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters Maria Stone, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Ann Benfield, Alexandria.

Evan Sylvester Turner

KANNAPOLIS — Evan Sylvester Turner, 89, 608 Sumner St., died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) in Georgetown, S.C.

Born Nov. 20, 1911, in Marion County, S.C., Mr. Turner was a son of the late William Monroe and Annie Lambert Turner. He was retired from Cannon Mills.

His wife, Reba Overcash Turner died Sept. 4, 1992.

Survivors include son Donald William Turner, Brookfield, ; sisters Bonnie and Lydia Altman, both of Georgetown, S.C., and Eva Rogers, Gresham, S.C.; brothers David Turner, Pauleys Island, S.C., and Willie Joe Turner, San Jose, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Services:3:30 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Paula Judy. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Rupert Turner

LEXINGTON — Rupert Turner, 88, of Edna Street, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

The family will be at the home of a daughter on Monteclair Drive, Lexington.
