Obituaries

            Audrey Shinn Bost

KANNAPOLIS — Audrey Shinn Bost, 87, Best of Care Rest Home, formerly of Arbor Lane, Concord, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at the rest home.

Born March 1, 1913, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Bost was a daughter of the late George and Betty Fink Shinn. She retired from the cloth room of Cannon Mills Plant 4, Kannapolis, after 55 years with the company. She was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Ralph Bost, died Sept. 18, 1974.

Survivors include daughters Imogene Carpenter, Charlotte, and Lovenia Price, Kannapolis; sister Vertie Williams, Manassas, Va.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services:2 today, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wes Judy. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 today, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at their homes.

Don M. Earnhardt

LEXINGTON — Don Maurice Earnhardt, 77, Jerusalem Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000)at Centerclair Nursing Home.

Born April 6, 1923, in Davidson County, Mr. Earnhardt was a son of the late Raymond Plato and Nora Clapp Earnhardt. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and retired from United Furniture after 40 years with the company. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Louise Farrington Earnhardt; daughters Donna Morris, Lexington, Penny Collins, Cooleemee, and Margaret Hoover; son Jerry Earnhardt, Pompano Beach, Fla., twin sister Louis Call, Lexington; sisters Mrs. Leroy Wilson, Lexington, and Frances Reeser, Arizona; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

William Bruce Gray

HIGH POINT —William Bruce Gray, 70, 612 Gatewood Ave., died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000)at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Gillean, formerly of Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First United Methodist Church. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial, Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point.

Bill Gray

Bill Gray, 80, Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born March 20, 1920, in Concord, Mr. Gray was a son of the late Wade Jackson and Ella Eunice Carpenter Gray. He was educated in the Cabarrus County schools and attended college in Washington, D.C.

He retired as an executive salesman who designed bathrooms. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was a volunteer for 18 years at the Hefner VA Medical Center. He was a member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force Association. He was an Episcopalian.

Survivors include wife Gayle Chataignier Gray, whom he married June 24, 1961; son Lee J. Gray, Arlington, Va.; daughters Genie Kelly, Sierra Vista, Ariz., Pattie Hales, Charlotte, Terri Daniels, Harrisburg, Lauren L. Suplizio and Louise A. Gray, both of Arlington, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

Services:Noon Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Clements. Burial, SalisburyNational Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard site.

Visitation:The family will receive friends as they leave for graveside rites.

Estelle Lowder Hahn

OAKBORO — Sunybeth Estelle Lowder Hahn, 88, 12739 N.C. Highway 205, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Stanly County, Mrs. Hahn was a daughter of the late Robert A. and Margaret Ann Kimrey Lowder. She was a retired push filler with Wiscassett Mills.

Mrs. Hahn was preceded in death by her husband, Reece Vaughn Hahn.

Survivors include brother Paul Lowder, Albemarle; sisters Margaret Almond, Albemarle, and Irene Musselwhite, China Grove.

Services: Today, 11 a.m., Hartsell Funeral Home. Burial, Oakboro Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of a nephew, Kenny Almond, 12739 N.C. Highway 205, Oakboro.

 

Jessie McLain Hartness

KANNAPOLIS — Jessie McLain Hartness, 89, formerly of 1125 S. Walnut St., died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center after one year of declining health.

Born July 4, 1911, in Alexander County, Mrs. Hartness was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mrs. Hartness was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Wilson Hartness.

Survivors include son Ted M. Hartness, Kannapolis; brother Tom McLain, Hiddenite; and sister Faye Powell, Kannapolis.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Cooper.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Janet Leichman

SPENCER — Janet Marie Simone Leichman, 62, Spencer, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000)at Rowan RegionalMedical Center.

Born Aug. 27, 1938, in Boston, Mass., Mrs. Leichman was a daughter of Gertrude Kane Simone, Cincinnati, Ohio, and the late Alman Simone. She was a gradate of Union Township High School, West Chester, Ohio, and Ohio Business College, Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a Pre-K assistant and after school dare director for Sacred Heart Catholic School.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, Family Life Commission, head of the Bereavement Committee and an RCIA teacher.

Survivors include husband Donald Reginald Leichman; sons Donald Joseph Leichman, Chattanooga, Tenn., Richard Douglas Leichman, Mooresville, and Kevin John Leichman, Salisbury; daughters Debbie Spry and Diana Spencer, both of Salisbury, and Karen Leichman Rouse, Spencer; brothers Richard Simone, Rock Springs, Texas, and Stephen Simone, Albuquerque, New Mexico; sisters Helen Stoneking, Doris Habedank and Priscilla Stenger, all of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Eleanor McCloud, Wilmington; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Mass of Christian Burial, 2 p.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. John Putnam, the Rev. Thomas Clements, the Rev. Pat Vallandingham, and the Rev. Dr. Jim Mazur. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Webb Arnold McLean

MOORESVILLE —Webb Arnold McLean, 85, West Statesville Avenue, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000)at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 2, 1915, in Mooresville, Mr. McLean was a son of the late James Webb and Velma Ludwig McLean. He was the owner/operator of McLean Supermarket for more than 40 years, and was a member of Mooresville ARP Church.

Mr. McLean was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Cook McLean.

Survivors include wife Helen S. McLean; sons Rick , Jimmy and Ron McLean, all of Mooresville; three stepchildren; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mooresville ARP Church, conducted by the Rev. Gerald R. Hallman, and the Rev. Mick Hinson, pastor, Metropolitan Community Church, Charlotte. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Dr. Robert George Peeler

Dr. Robert George Peeler, Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000)at Highlands Cashiers Hospital, Highlands.

Born Dec. 15, 1929, in Salisbury, Mr. Peeler was a son of the late Dr. Banks Peeler and Agnes A. Peeler. He was a graduate of Catawba College and Johns Hopkins Medical Hospital, Baltimore, Md. He served his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at Duke University, and served for two years in the U.S. Navy. He practiced as an internist and in cardiology in Jacksonville, Fla. from 1961-1997.

Survivors include wife Gayle Lorimer Peeler; sons Timothy Andrew Peeler, Jacksonville, Fla., and Dr. Benjamin Banks Peeler, Charlottesville, Va.; daughter Elizabeth Marie Boening, Winston-Salem; brother Dr. Richard N. Peeler, Annapolis, Md.; sister Jean Peeler Arnold, Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Bob Arnold, minister, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Charlotte.

Guy D. Rinehardt

CONCORD —Guy David Rinehardt, 90, 4210 Gold Hill Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) after a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 18, 1910, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Rinehardt was a son of the late Charles and Inez Barringer Rinehardt. He retired from the card room of Cannon Mills Plant 5.

His wife, Clidybell Little Rinehardt, died in March 1998.

Survivors include daughter Frances R. Mullis, Concord; sons John D., Melvin C., and Junior Howard Rinehardt, all of Concord, and Robert Wayne Rinehardt, Columbia, S.C.; sisters Fredia Sanders, Concord, and Lou Anne Barnhardt, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dale Jenkins, and the Rev. Glenn Burris. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Concord.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Helen Robertson

REIDSVILLE — Helen Gibson Robertson, 92, formerly of 1106 Lawsonville Ave., died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 10, 1908, in Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Haggart Gibson. She was employed by Annie Penn Hospital as a nurse’s aide for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church and attended while her health permitted.

Her husband, Ben Robertson, died Dec. 25, 1982.

Survivors include daughters Nancy R. Massey, Burlington, and Barbara R. Soyars, Reidsville; sisters Doris Pethel and Cardell Gibson, both of Salisbury; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, East Side Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gene Davis, pastor. Burial, River View Cemetery, Madison.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the church.

Mary Frances Speight

ALBEMARLE — Mary Frances Bolton Speight, 80, 314 Garrison Drive, died Monday (Dec. 25, 20000)at her residence.

Born Sept. 24, 1920, in Stanly County, Mrs. Speight was a daughter of the late Retha and Anna Bailey Bolton. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Her husband, John A. Speight, died in 1980.

Survivors include son Dean Speight, Albemarle; brother Bill Bolton, Asheboro; sister Johnlyn Poplin, Albemarle; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 today, Stanly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Howard Benoy. Burial, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Oakboro.

Willette McCall Sturdivant

Willette McCall Sturdivant, 73, 807 N. Green St., died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at her residence, after two weeks of serious illness.

Survivors include grandchildren reared in the home, Ronald Sturdivant Jr., Salisbury, and Akeem Abdullah-Malik (Derrick Graham), Charlotte.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by brother Steven Foster. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Roselle McIntruff Willis

MOORESVILLE —Roselle McIntruff Willis, 74, Statesville Highway, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Lake Norman RegionalMedical Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1926, in Johnson City, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Richard and Judy Paul McIntruff. She was a homemaker and a member of Shepherd Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Earl B. Willis; sons E.B. Willis Jr., Mooresville, and Mark A. Willis, Mount Ulla; sisters Ruby Purcell, Mooresville, and Rene Bennett, Johnson City, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
