Audrey Bost

KANNAPOLIS — Audrey S. Bost, 87, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000), at Best of Care.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Ollie Rodgers Cavin

KANNAPOLIS — Ollie Leona Rodgers Cavin, 78, 9401 Oakridge Drive, Kannapolis, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, after two years of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Cavin was a daughter of the late Walt and Lucy Smith Rodgers.

She was retired from the winder room of Linn Mills in Landis, where she worked for 43 years. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church and a lifetime resident of the area.

Survivors include husband, Banks E. Cavin; daughter Kathy C. Gantt, Kannapolis; sons Tom Cavin and Kenny Cavin, both of Kannapolis; sister Elizabeth Cook, Kannapolis; brothers Charles Rodgers, Lewis Rodgers and Marvin “Buddy” Rodgers, all of Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Kathy C. Gantt, 2302 West C Street.

Memorials: Bethpage United Methodist Church, 109 Fellowship Ave., Kannapolis, NC 28081.

 

Helen Baker Crowell

MOORESVILLE — Helen Baker Crowell, 84, a lifelong resident of Mooresville and recent resident of the Piedmont Retirement Center, Thomasville, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Community General Hospital, Thomasville.

Survivors include husband, Charles M. Crowell Jr. of the retirement center; daughters Anne C. Westwater, The Sea Ranch, Calif., Camille C. Townsend, Greensboro, and Helen C. McElroy, Kernersville; a son Charles M. Crowell III, Thomasville; brothers Robert Baker and Pete Baker, both of Mooresville; sister Ruth Baker Pope, Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1:30 p.m. today, Glenwood Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: Following the memorial service in the church parlor.

Bill Gray

Bill Gray, 80, of Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Richard Otha Kelly

ALBEMARLE — Richard Otha Kelly, 66, of 6221 East Huntress Drive, Paradise Valley, Ariz., died Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2000) at Scottsdale Healthcare.

Born Dec. 25, 1933, in Charlotte, Mr. Kelly was a son of the late Bertie Louise Robinson and Locke William Kelly.

He was a retired real estate investor.

Survivors include daughters Elizabeth Mancera Kelly, Mexico Calli, Mexico, and Louise Kelly, La Jolla, Calif.; sons John Kelly, Modesto, Calif., Michael Kelly and Richard Kelly Jr., both of La Jolla, Calif.; sisters Patricia Eudy, Albemarle, Peggy Howell, Lithia, Fla.; brothers Jerry Kelly, LaGrange, Calif., and Locke William Kelly Jr., Hampton, Va.; and seven grandchildren .

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Hunsucker. Burial, Canton Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Pat Eudy, 2133 Woodcroft Lane.

 

Robert George Peeler

Dr. Robert George Peeler, 71, of Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Highlands Cashiers Hospital in Highlands, N.C.

CONCORD — Guy David Rinehardt, 90, of 4210 Gold Hill Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

James Walter Roberts

LEXINGTON — James Walter Roberts, 73, Dixie Street, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born March 12, 1927, in Davidson County, Mr. Roberts was a son of the late Marshall Alexander and Ella Roxie Fuller Roberts.

He retired as a night watchman from Gordon-Veneer Co.

Mr. Roberts served in the U.S. Army and was a life member of New Jersey AME Zion Church.

Survivors include sons James Levon Roberts, Winston-Salem, Thomas Hill Roberts, Grover Lee Roberts and Anthony B. Roberts, all of Lexington, and Lester Pernell Roberts, High Point; daughters, Linda Faye Roberts, Lexington, and Toni Call Roberts, Greensboro; sisters Stella Baker, Lexington, and Julia Boler, Winston-Salem; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Allen Stinson, pastor of New Jersey AME Zion Church.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Maggie Sides Snider

KANNAPOLIS — Maggie Sides Snider, 85, of 4398 Pine St., died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 26, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Snider was a daughter of the late Paul Jerome and Mary Jane Hatley Sides.

A resident of the area most of her life, she retired in 1980 from the washcloth department at Cannon Mills Plant 1 in Kannapolis.

Her husband Clifford Aaron “Cliff” Snider died Oct. 1, 1992.

Survivors include brothers Henry Sides, Rockwell, Martin L. Sides, Salisbury; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services: 2 p.m. today, graveside, Carolina Memorial Park.

Memorials: American Lung Association of N.C., South Central Area, 5315 Greenbrook Drive, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Willette McCall Sturdivant

Willette McCall Sturdivant, 73, of 807 N. Green St., died Sunday ( Dec. 24, 2000) at her residence.

Born March 13, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Sturdivant was the daughter of the late Catherine Pitts and Mitchell McCall.

She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School and had retired from the Hefner VA Medical Center and Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Sturdivant was a member of the Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Her husband, RupertSturdivant, died in 1988.

Survivors include son Ronald Sturdivant, Salisbury; daughters Brenda Robinson, Rock Hill, S.C., Rita Sturdivant, Salisbury, and Christine Rhyne, China Grove; brothers, Clayton Sturdivant, Salisbury, and Larry Sturdivant, East Spencer; sisters Juanita Ramsey, Madgeline Sturdivant and Helen Norris, all of Salisbury, and Gloria Sturdivant, East Spencer; special friend Ruth Russell, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

James R. Swing Jr.

LEXINGTON —James Roy Swing Jr., 87, Poplar St., Lexington, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital after two years of declining health.

Born Aug. 11, 1913, in Davidson County, Mr. Swing was a son of the late James Ruffin and Bessie Sowers Swing.

He was a lifelong dairyman and helped operate Swing Dairy until it closed. He then worked with City of Lexington Utilities as a dispatcher.

For many years, he helped maintain the Davidson County Fairgrounds and was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Olivia Perrell Swing, who died in 1977.

Survivors include son James Roscoe Swing III, Linwood, and Richard Swing, Lexington; daughters Camille Goss and Amanda Swing Harp, both of Lexington, Dinah Zuver, Bonham, Texas, and Margaret Williams, Greensboro; brothers Thomas Tracy Swing and Jack Edwin Swing, both of Lexington; sister Lois Shedlock, St. Petersburg, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Bill Joe Leonard and the Rev. Mike Hopper. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Dickie and Mary Alice Swing, 855 Greensboro St. Ext.

KANNAPOLIS — Evan S. Turner, formerly of Kannapolis, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) in Georgetown, S.C.
