Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and one month of
serious illness.

Fulton. She had retired after eight years as an inspector with Delmar Printing.

Born Jan. 17, 1925, in Stanly
County, Mr. Burris was a son of the lateGeorge and Magdalene Whitley Burris.
Retired from Holt Oil Co., he was a member of Anderson Grove Baptist Church. He
was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the VFW.
His wife, Louise Aldridge Burris,
died Aug. 18, 1996.

John Henry Cole Jr., 91,
Salisbury, formerly of College Park, Md., died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Brian
Health and Rehabilitation Center after three weeks of serious illness.
Born June 23, 1909, in Brentwood,
Md., Mr. Cole was a son of the late John Henry and Emma Moore Cole. Educated in
the Brentwood schools, he was employed as a plasterer in the Maryland and
Washington, D.C., areas and had worked on the White House during its renovation.
His wife, Margie Cole, died in
1980.
Survivors include daughters Sally
Jeffers, Virginia Beach, Va., and Patricia Floyd, Woburn, Mass.; brother Harry
Cole, Dallastown, Pa.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
Services: None. The body will be
cremated.

Born in Anderson County, Mr.
Evans was a son of the late Elmer Franklin and Emma McConnell Evans. A graduate
of Anderson College, he was a truck driver for Murrows Transfer Co., High Point.
He had earlier served as a regional manger for Avis Rental Car Co.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death
by his first wife, Geraldine McMurray Evans, and his second wife, Dollie
Hilliard Evans.

ALBEMARLE —Ulysses Alexander
Hatley, 89, 16656 Highway 73, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at the home of a
daughter, Larvene Eury, 36362 Bridge Road, Mount Pleasant.
Born Nov. 26, 1911, in Stanly
County, Mr. Hatley was a son of the late Rufus Alexander and Mary Ann Harwood
Hatley. A retired farmer, he was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and a
former member of the administrative board for the church. He was a founding
member of the Millingport Volunteer Fire Department and served as its first
treasurer.
His wife of 66 years, Isabelle
Page Hatley, died June 24, 2000.
Survivors include son Ted Hatley,
Albemarle; daughters Larvene H. Eury, Mount Pleasant, and Cedel H. Lowder,
Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchild.

Adam Nathaniel Herring
CHINA GROVE — Adam Nathaniel
Herring, 93, 503 Chapel St., died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born July 13, 1907, in Cabarrus
County, he was the son of the late Samuel Preston and Caroline Brock Herring. He
was educated in the Stanly County school system.
Mr. Herring worked at Cannon
Mills for 42 years and retired from China Grove Textiles as a spinning doffer.
He was a member of Landis Baptist Church.
His wife, Mae Belle Hill Herring,
died Sept. 26, 1977.
Survivors include son Donnie
Nathaniel Herring of China Grove; daughter Linda Miller of China Grove; four
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at
Landis Baptist Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial at

Frederick Robert Nelson
Fredrick Robert “Fred”
Nelson, 50, 145 Partridge Run, died Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born Sept. 1, 1950, in Billings,
Mont., he was the son of Bernie Blackford Nelson of Billings and the late Neal
B. Nelson. Educated in the Billings schools, he graduated from Rocky Mountain
College. He also attended the Sorbonne in Paris and Georgia College in
Milledgeville. He received a master’s degree in social work from the
University of Georgia.
He was a social worker with the
Hefner VA Medical Center for five years before he retired in 1997. Prior to
that, Mr. Nelson was a forensic psychologist for the Forensic Services Center at
Central State Hospital in Georgia for 17 years. He also served as a psychologist
for the developmentally disabled at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville,
Ga., for three years.
Survivors include wife JoAnn
Smith Nelson, whom he married Dec. 29, 1979; son Neal Burton Nelson, of the
home; stepson Michael Brian Bloodworth of Milledgeville, Ga.; brother Wayne L.
Nelson of Billings, Mont.; and two step-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at
Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. S. David Carriker, pastor of
Third Creek Presbyterian Church. The body will be cremated.

Doris Dunn Sedberry Masters, 81,
205 Willow Road, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 21, 1919, in Woodleaf,
Mrs. Masters was a daughter of the late William Elmer and Essie Mae Sapp Dunn.
She was a graduate of Woodleaf High School. She and her late husband owned and
operated M&S Cleaners in Salisbury for 27 years until his death in 1977.
A member of Unity Presbyterian
Church, Mrs. Masters was active in the choir and served on a committee to
refurbish the church interior.
Her first husband, Ray Almond
Sedberry, died April 18, 1977.
Survivors include husband Walter
“Walt” Masters; sons W. “Marti” Martin Sedberry, Mooresville; daughter
Judith “Judy” Zinter, Washington, D.C.; brother Billy Dunn, Woodleaf; nine
grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Robert C. ‘R.C.’ Naylor
Robert C. “R.C.” Naylor, 72,
Salisbury, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after
one year of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born Aug. 15, 1928, in Sampson
County, Mr. Naylor was a son of the late Grady B. and Vivie Capps Naylor.
Educated in the Sampson County schools, he had retired due to ill health in 1988
from Ridenhour Supply after 15 years with the company.
Mr. Naylor was a member of Yadkin
Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Fellowship and the Senior
Citizens Sunday School Class. After his retirement he was a Santa’s helper for
13 years at local malls.
His first wife, Mary Dunn Naylor,
died Nov. 17, 1988.
Survivors include wife Rosa Lee
Pinkston Naylor; sons Randall C. Naylor, Salisbury; daughters Carolyn N. Jenkins
and Frances N. White, both of Spencer, and Sue N. Shakleford, Salisbury;
stepsons Larry Poole, Salisbury, and Jerry Poole, Raleigh; stepdaughter Rhonda
Emerson, Salisbury; sisters Eva Taylor, Dunn, Tynie West, Lillington, and Myrtle

Ga., she was a daughter of Joseph J. Trexler, Mesa, Ariz., and the late Margaret
Snyder Trexler. She was a senior at Catawba College, where she was majoring in
Christian education and was a member of the Catawba Chapel Choir.
She was a past president of Phi
Beta Lamda at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and was a past state vice
president of the organization. She was also a member of Landmark Church, where
she served in the choir and was a Pioneer Club teacher.

D., and Terry R. Trexler, both of Illinois, and Stephen M. Trexler, Wisconsin;
sisters Shirley Stephens, Florida, Delcina Holmes, Indiana, and Vicki Pizzino,

ALBEMARLE — James Curtis Vanhoy,
77, 33713 Ingold School Road, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at the VA Medical
Center in Durham.
Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Stanly
County, Mr. Vanhoy was a son of the late Jeter and Nora Cagle Vanhoy. He was a
retired carpenter for Newsome Roofing Co.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served
during World War II in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member
of the VFW.

Virginia Bowers Vanhoy; stepmother Zora Barbee Vanhoy, Albemarle; sons Johnny,
Ronald Lee, Randy Joe and David Vanhoy, all of Albemarle, and James C. Vanhoy
