Mollie Whitaker Binkley

MOCKSVILLE — Mollie Whitaker Binkley, 87, U.S. Highway 64 W., died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000)at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Born May 12, 1913, in Davie County, Mrs. Binkley was a daughter of the late Thomas and Zennie Beck Whitaker. She was a retired furniture factory worker and a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Mrs. Binkley was preceded in death by her husband, Howard N. Binkley, who died Oct. 20, 1973, and daughter Janet Whitaker Hall, who died in 1990.

Survivors include daughter Carolyn Binkley, Mocksville; sister Lila Adams, Mocksville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Liberty Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Blackburn and the Rev. Albert Bracken. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Thursday, at the church.

Velna Lee Beaver Brown

The funeral will be Thursday for Velna Lee Beaver Brown, 83, of Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000) at her residence.

Born Dec. 23, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Homer Adolphous and Mary Lee Goodman Beaver. A graduate of Rockwell High School, she was church organist for Immanuel Lutheran Church for 61 years, where she was a member. She was a piano teacher, a member of Immanuel Senior Citizens Club, a member of the Arthur Shipton Sunday School Class, and was a member of TLC Group from Powles Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Brown, who died Jan. 16, 1985.

Survivors include brother James Brantly Beaver, Rockwell; and niece Kim Beaver, whom she made her home with.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be the residence.

Maria Nicole Edwards

Alyssa Morgan Edwards

LINWOOD —Maria Nicole Edwards and Alyssa Morgan Edwards, of Old Wesley Chapel Road, died at birth Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Survivors include parents Melanie Graves and David Wayne Edwards Jr., both of the home; grandparents David Wayne and Linda Richardson Edwards, Welcome, and Haywood and Margaret Long Graves, Linwood; and great-grandparent Dewey Edwards, Lexington.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Greg Barefoot.

Visitation: Following the service in the fellowship hall.

Vera L. Lindsay Edwards

Vera L. Lindsay Edwards, 62, 711 Hyde St., formerly of Pennington Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000)at the Brian Center.

Born Sept. 13, 1938, in Davidson County, Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late Abram and Luvenia Moore Lindsay. Employed at American Children’s Home as a cook, she was a member of New Smith Grove Baptist Church, serving on the pastor’s aide and kitchen committees.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melton Edwards, who died May 27, 1980.

Survivors include son James A. Edwards, Manhattan, N.Y.; daughters Diane Anderson, Alexandria, Va., and Sinatra Jackson, Dumfries, Va.; brothers Abram Lindsay Jr., Lexington, Robert A. Lindsay, Wheaton, Md., and Harvey B.. Lindsay, Fork Church; sisters Mary L. Wilson, Katherine L. Hogan, Bettie L. Verdell, all of Lexington, and Diane Hargrave, Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:3:30 p.m. Friday, New Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald B. Shoaf. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3-3:30 p.m. Friday, at the church. The body can be viewed 3-8 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

James T. Jenkins

KANNAPOLIS — James T. Jenkins, 77, of Kannapolis, died Monday (Dec. 18, 2000) at Avante of Concord.

Lottie P. Johnson

Lottie P. Johnson, 91, 619 Lafayette Circle, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Willie Elvin ‘Bone’ Lanning

Willie Elvin ‘Bone’ Lanning, 78, of Spencer, died Monday (Dec. 18, 2000) at his residence, after six months of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Davidson County, Mr. Lanning was a son of the late Willie Gray and Beulah Wilson Lanning Davis. Educated in Spencer schools, he retired from N.C. Finishing Company in 1986, after 50 years with the company.

Survivors include wife, Jo Ann Loflin Lanning, whom he married May 2, 1953; daughters Karen Deaver, China Grove, Sherry Simmons, Salisbury, and Jodi Loftin, Spencer; sisters Elouise Snider, Churchland, Jean Carter, Georgia, and Joann Davis, Spencer; and four grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, pastor, Trinity Wesleyan Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Jessie Duncan Long

Jessie Duncan Long, 89, of Salisbury Gardens, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000) at Autumn CAre of Salisbury.

Born Jan. 13, 1911, in Church Road, Va., Mrs. Long was a daughter of the late George Alexander and Josie Jones Duncan. A graduate of high school and business college in Roxboro, she was a bookkeeper for Ledbetter’s and, in later years, for the Rural Electrical Association. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church, Roxboro, for 64 years, and more recently was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury.

Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Long.

Survivors include sons William Franklin Long Jr., Jacksonville, and Joseph Duncan Long, Durham; daughter Rachel Long Buchanan, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services:Memorial, 11 a.m. Thursday, chapel of First United Methodist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, minister, and the Rev. Sherri Barnes, associate minister. The body will be cremated. Burial, Burchwood Cemetery, Roxboro.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Thursday, in the parlor at the church, prior to the service.

Zada Rose K. Norfleet

Zada Rose Kimmer Norfleet, 78, of Charlotte, formerly of Salisbury, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Aug. 8, 1922, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Norfleet was a daughter of the late Hurley W. and Mary Jane Almond Kimmer. Educated in Cabarrus County schools, she was retired from the food services department of the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center.

Mrs. Norfleet was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Reginald “Rocky” Norfleet, who died Dec. 28, 1986, and a daughter, Judy Stusse.

Survivors include son Donald L. Kimmer, Charlotte; stepson Lewis R. Norfleet, Orlando, Fla.; sister Loree Eudy, Lexington, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 1 p.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts.

Visitation:11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

 

William Flay Sneed

KANNAPOLIS —William Flay Sneed, 82, 2105 Woodlawn St., died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born May 23, 1918, in Gaston County, Mr. Sneed was a son of the late William Esley and Lois George Sneed. He retired several years ago from Cannon Mills Plant 1, Kannapolis, where he had worked in the weave room, roller shop, and in research and development. He had lived in this area since 1939 and was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sneed was preceded in death by a son, Gary Flay Sneed, who died in 1940.

Survivors include wife of 62 years Helen Henry Sneed; sons Joel W. Sneed, Salisbury, and Stephen R. Sneed, Banner Elk; sisters Jo Jenkins, Charlotte, and Ruth Norton, Mooresville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Milo Paul Spencer

CONWAY, S.C. —The funeral will be Thursday for Milo Paul Spencer, 76, 985 Poinsetta Drive, formerly of Woodson St., Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 18, 2000)at Conway Hospital, after a long illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., Mr. Spencer was a son of the late Milo Charles and Winona Margaret Yohannan Spencer. He was a retail buyer for a variety of department stores and was a Mason. He served as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and later served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Stollberg Spencer, who died Jan. 10, 1998, and a son, Bruce Raymond Spencer, who died May 7, 1988.

Survivors include sister Pat Johnson, Marietta, Ga.; brothers Jim Spencer, Toledo, Ohio, and Robert Spencer, Slyvania, Ohio; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, U.S. National Cemetery, Government Road location, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Joe Casey, retired Methodist minister. Military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation:10-10:45 a.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Wilton Wilhite

KANNAPOLIS —Wilton Cornelius Wilhite, 72, 8015 Georgia Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health.

Born July 13, 1928, in Hart County, Ga., Mr. Wilhite was a son of the late Robert Clayton and Della Adams Wilhite. He was a retired employee of Cannon Mills Plant 1, No. 7 card room. He was a member of Prince of Peace Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Annie Cavin Wilhite; daughter Patty Baker, China Grove; sons Randy Wilhite, Rockwell, Bobby and Dean Wilhite, both of Kannapolis, and Ray Wilhite, China Grove; sister Annie Ruth Morgan, China Grove; brothers Horace and Carlton Wilhite, both of Murphy, and Wayne Wilhite, China Grove; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Chuck Overcash Jr. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Carl ‘Buddy’ Wilkerson

Carl Torrence “Buddy” Wilkerson, 62, 160 Goodson Road, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000) at his residence, after several years of declining health.

Services:1 p.m. Friday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Wendell A. Johnson, pastor First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery, Winston-Salem, with military rites conducted by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

 

Ruby Wilson

Ruby Wilson, 78, of Salisbury, died Sunday (Dec. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after two days of serious illness.

Born July 16, 1922, in Rowan County, Miss Wilson was a daughter of the late Luther Elliott and Bertie Walser Wilson. Educated in Rowan County schools and Central Piedmont Community College, she taught school at Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte. She was of the Lutheran faith.

She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Wilson.

She is survived by a sister, Lessie Ammons, Salisbury.

Services: Service of Remembrance, 11 a.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bost, chaplain of Trinity Oaks, Salisbury. The body will be cremated.

Visitation:None.
