Currie Ransom Cates Jr.
SPENCER — Currie Ransom Cates Jr., 82, 221 Earnhardt Ave., died Friday (Dec. 15, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Spencer, Mr. Cates was a son of the late Currie Ransom and Maude Tucker Cates. Educated in the Spencer schools, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. A conductor for Southern Railway, he was employed with the company for 39 years before his retirement on Sept. 5, 1978.
Mr. Cates was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Gordon Gobble Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men, where he served as secretary. He also served on the administrative board and history committee of the church.
A 32nd-degree Mason, he was a member of Spencer Masonic Lodge No. 543 AF and AM, Oasis Temple of the Shrine, Rowan Shrine Club, Spencer American Legion Post No. 241 and the United Transportation Union. He was a charter member of Spencer Moose Lodge No. 2019.
Survivors include wife Margaret Hendrix Cates, whom he married Oct. 25, 1945, and sister Maude C. Earnhardt, Salisbury.
Services:11 a.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rodney H. Hagans, pastor of Central United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with graveside rites by Spencer Masonic Lodge.
Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Della Ann Poe Clark
Della Ann Poe Clark, 62, Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 2, 1938, in Tazwell County, Va., Mrs. Clark was a daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Alice Edwards Poe. Educated in the Tazwell County schools, she worked at Burlington Industries.
Survivors include sisters Edith P. Hayth and Pauline Goodman, both of Salisbury, Dorothy P. Morris, Denton, Helen P. Dunford, Bucyrus, Ohio, Gladys P. Harrison, Lexington, and Frances P. Hoffner, Mount Ulla.

Cleo G. Dedmon
COOLEEMEE — Cleo G. Dedmon, 84, Pine Ridge Road, formerly of Emerald Isle, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000)at the family home.
Born Jan. 3, 1916, in Davie County, Mrs. Dedmon was a daughter of the late Male and Hattie Copley Gregory. A homemaker, she had retired from Erwin Mills, after 11 years with the company. She was a member of Chapel by the Sea in Emerald Isle.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, L.C. Dedmon.
Survivors include sons Delano and Terry Dedmon, both of Cooleemee; brothers Baxter and J.P. Gregory, both of Cooleemee; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Davie Funeral Service, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford. Burial, Legion Memorial Park, Mocksville.

Fred Hickey Gordon Jr.
Fred Hickey Gordon Jr., 71, Genesis ElderCare, died Thursday (Dec. 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1929, in Goldsboro, Mr. Gordon was a son of the late Fred and Nicolia Crosby Gordon. Educated in the Goldsboro schools, Mr. Gordon formerly worked at Bernhardt Hardware. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Ruth Sapari, Dallas, Texas, and Patricia Ramseur, Salisbury; brother Leroy Gordon, Gastonia; sisters Amelia Johnson, Richmond, Va., Katie Neely, Oceanside, N.Y., Iona Ashley and Dorothy Gordon, both of Gastonia, and Ruth Womack, Kings Mountain; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services:2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James Stowe, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation: 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the church. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of daughter Patricia Ramseur, 238 Woody Ave.

J.E. ‘Snow’ Isenhour
J.E. “Snow” Isenhour, 83, Salisbury, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 6, 1916, in Catawba County, Mr. Isenhour was a son of the late Dewey and Addie Mae Bostian Isenhour. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart.
Mr. Isenhour was a retired carman for Southern Railway. He attended Old Country Baptist Church, Salisbury, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroaders.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Isenhour.
Survivors include wife Zora Carswell Isenhour, whom he married July 3, 1936; son James Edward “Ed” Isenhour, Salisbury; daughter Ruth Safrit, Hickory; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Birdie Kaye “Bert” Jenkins, 85, 109 Harrell Court, died Thursday (Dec. 14, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of serious illness.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where she was active in Missionary Circle No. 3. She was a former member of Mount Airy Baptist Church, Washington, D.C.

Georgiana Davis Thomas
Georgiana Davis Thomas, 80, Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Arthur David and Georgiana Haire Davis. A homemaker, she was a graduate of Cleveland High School.
Her husband, Robert Eugene Thompson, died Aug. 30, 1983.
Survivors include son Robert Kent Thompson, Charlotte; daughters Judy Cobb, Faith, and Deanna Williams, Salisbury; brother David Davis, Mocksville; sisters Beulah Davis, Millbridge, and Agnes Roudabush, Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Sam Martin Ussery
NORWOOD — Sam Martin Ussery, 71, 33845 West Road, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000) at his home.
Born Aug. 17, 1929, in Stanly County, Mr. Ussery was a son of the late Sam Moyle and Bertie Lee Bost Ussery. A retired service station attendant for Service Distributing Co., he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church.
He is survived by a brother, Charlie Lee Ussery, Albemarle.
Visitation:7-9 p.m. tonight and Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.
Carl ‘Buddy’ Wilkerson
Carl Torrence “Buddy” Wilkerson, 62, 160 Goodson Road, died Saturday (Dec. 16, 2000)at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 27, 1937, in Granville County, Mr. Wilkerson was a son of the late Henry Classic and Evelyn Johnson Wilkerson. A graduate of Jones County High School in Trenton, he had retired from the U.S. Army after 33 years of service. A Mason, he was a member of an American Legion Post in Tampa, Fla.
Survivors include son Torrence Ray Wilkerson, San Antonio, Texas; daughter Regina Cummings, Tampa, Fla.; sisters Marcia Phifer, Delran, N.J., C. Pauline Corry, Salisbury, Sandra J. Stewart, Tampa, Fla., and Carolyn W. Duncan, Beverly, N.J.
