Bernice Guy Almond

ALBEMARLE — Bernice Guy Almond, 84, 24138-A Wyatt Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 12, 2000) at his residence.

Born Jan. 21, 1916, in Stanly County, Mr. Almond was a son of the late Harris Lee and Clona Gertrude Hahn Almond. Mr. Almond worked in toe dying and was a retired dryer hand. He was a World War IIU.S. Army veteran, lifetime member of Albemarle-Stanly County DAV and was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church.

Survivors include wife Ruby Lee Efird Almond, of the home; son Guy Almond, Albemarle; daughters Pat Little, Atlanta, Ga., Clona “Tink” Barbee, Albemarle; brothers Elbert Almond, Albemarle, Don Almond, Johnson City, Tenn., Hoyett Almond, Kinston; sisters Hazel Burris, Albemarle, and Aileen Williamson, Whiteville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rob Roberts. Burial, St. Martin Lutheran Church Cemetery, Albemarle, with military rites conducted by Albemarle Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Paul A. Brown, 100

Paul Alexander Brown, 100, of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury.

Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Betty Roberts Coan

CHINA GROVE — Betty Roberts Coan, 72, 1505 Daughtery Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis is in charge.

 

Clyde Russell Goodman

CHINA GROVE — Clyde Russell Goodman, 71, 1035 Mount Moriah Church Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after four years of declining health and two weeks of critical illness.

Born June 5, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman was a son of the late Lawrence Homer and Coralea Huitt Goodman. Educated in Rowan County schools, Mr. Goodman retired from Hoechst Celanese in 1996 and helped his wife in drapery manufacturing. He was a member of American Legion Post 185, China Grove, and was chairman of the worship/music committee for several years at Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, where he was a former church council member.

Survivors include wife Lynnie Corriher Goodman; sons Richard Goodman, China Grove, and Kenny Goodman, Landis; daughter Judy G. Crowell, China Grove; brother Paul V. Goodman, Troutman; sister Nancy V. Goodman, China Grove; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Friday, Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles MacMurphy. Entombment, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Hughel Iclius Kidd

KANNAPOLIS —Hughel Iclius Kidd, 77, 8260 Park Edwards Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 12, 2000)at his residence.

Born Jan. 6, 1923, in Comer, Ga., Mr. Kidd was a son of the late Thomas and Martha Kidd. He retired in 1981 from Cannon Mills Co., bleachery department, and was a World War IIU.S. Army veteran serving in the European and African Theatre. He received the Purple Heart and a Presidential Commendation as well as other awards and decorations, and was a member of the VFW.

Mr. Kidd was preceded in death by his wife, Constance Smith Kidd, who died June 14, 1998.

Survivors include daughters Nancy Whittaker, Charlotte, Laureen Anderson, Cincinnatti, Ohio, and Sharon Adkins, Kannapolis; son Douglas Summer, Concord; and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Karl Aschmann. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Mae Mabel Lowder

KANNAPOLIS —Mae Mabel Lowder, 97, formerly of 336 Chestnut Ave., died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

George Luther Goodman

George Luther Goodman, 59, of Salisbury, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at Vencor Hospital, Greensboro.

Born Jan. 31, 1941, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman was a son of the late Charles B. and Vergie Miller Goodman. Educated in Rowan County schools, Mr. Goodman worked at N.C. Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury.

Mr. Goodman was preceded in death by his infant son, Stanton George Goodman, who died Aug. 23, 1968.

Survivors include wife Brenda Earnhardt Goodman, whom he married Feb. 10, 1963; son Daniel Glenn Goodman, of the home; daughter Wanda G. Jackson, Salisbury; brother Charles B. Goodman, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Iverson Brendle, retired minister.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Walter Chauncey Morgan

GOLD HILL —Walter Chauncey Morgan, 93, of Gold Hill, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at his residence.

Born Sept. 11, 1907, in Rowan County, Mr. Morgan was a son of the late John Franklin and Amanda Virginia Trexler Morgan. Educated in Rowan County schools, Mr. Morgan was retired from N.C. Finishing, after 40 years with the company. He was a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and a charter member of Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his first wife, Neta Cranford Morgan, who died in 1935.

Survivors include Lena Morgan Morgan, whom he married in 1940; sons Donald Clinton Morgan, Sylva, Bronnie L. Morgan, Salisbury, and Darrell W. Morgan, Pine Knoll Shores; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Friday, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Hazel Holder Palmer

Hazel Holder Palmer, 78, of Salisbury, died today (Dec. 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Thelma Shue Ritchie

LANDIS —Thelma Shue Ritchie, 83, 600 W. Rice St., died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 8, 1917, in Landis, she was a daughter of the late Ralph B. and Daisey Cline Shue. A 1934 graduate of Landis High School, she worked for Linn-Edwards Drug Co., in Landis and later was a home maker. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include husband Clyde F. Ritchie, of the home; son Clyde F. Ritchie Jr., Winston-Salem; brother Norman Shue, Garner; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Graham NaHouse. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

 

Evelyn Roberts Sowers

DAVIDSON — Evelyn Roberts Sowers, 93, formerly of Salisbury, died today (Dec. 14, 2000) at The Pines of Davidson.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Ruby Cooper Stirewalt

Ruby Cooper Stirewalt, 88, 2720 Miller Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000)at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Burn Center.

Born Feb. 14, 1912, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late William Vance and Beulah Basinger Cooper. Educated in Rowan County schools, she worked as a seamstress at Leisure Lads. She was a member of Cress Home Demonstration Club and Grace Lutheran Church, where she was a part of the Ivy Basinger Sunday School Class and the former Women of the Church. She also was a former Sunday school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Leroy Stirewalt, and a son, Willie Lee Stirewalt.

Survivors include son Gene Albert Stirewalt, Salisbury; daughter Helen S. Correll, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Woodrow Frick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.
