‘Chuck’ Bryant Jr.
Charles Redgeman “Chuck” Bryant Jr., 76, 403 Gates St., died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 27, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Bryant was a son of the late Edith Lenora Stilwell and Charles R. Bryant. Educated in Kannapolis city schools, he served in the U.S. Navy and afterward attended Catawba College.
He had been employed for more than 25 years with Wachovia Bank as an insurance adjuster, which later became Integon Insurance. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include wife Stella Veronica “Ronnie” Ramanauskas Bryant; son Reggie Bryant, Asheville; daughters Barbara Wadel, Lake Wiley, and Debora Sangster, Lake Norman; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services:11 a.m. Thursday, Carolina Memorial Park, Concord, conducted by the Rev. James Cook, chaplain, Rowan Regional Medical Center. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Malissa Chambers Brown
Malissa Chambers Brown, 94, 314 Grim St., died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at her residence, after several years of declining health and five months of serious illness.
Born July 4, 1906, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Rufus and Eva Clark Chambers. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a graduate from nursing school at L. Richardson Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. She worked for 49 years as a registered nurse at Seaview Hospital, Staten Island, N.Y., and retired after 11 years from Jolene’s Nursing Home.
She was a member of Miller’s Chapel AME Zion Church, where she was affiliated with the Senior Choir, the Deaconess Board, Parent Body Missionary Society and as a Sunday school teacher while able. She was also a member of the Lafayette Senior Citizens, the 4-H Club and various nursing organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Ray” Brown, who died April 11, 1991.
She is survived by a sister Willie Mae Moore, Salisbury, with whom she made her home.
Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Miller Chapel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Matthew A. Williamson, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

William Shaw Charles III
There will be a private service for William Shaw Charles III, a retired Lt. Col. of the U.S. Army, 83, of Spencer, who died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1917, in Charlotte, Mr. Charles was a son of the late Clara Wagoner and William S. Charles Jr. Educated in the Charlotte school system, he was employed with Duke Power Co. prior to entering the U.S. Army, where he served for 27 years during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring in in 1968 as a Lt. Col. He then moved to Spencer, where he owned McLeod’s Remnant Shop for 17 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, Charlotte, and was a Mason.
Survivors include wife Nancy Henderson Charles; son William H. Charles, Chapel Hill, and James H. Charles, Spencer; daughter Nancy C. Parsifal, Chapel Hill; sister Margaret Davis, Charlotte; and four grandchildren.
Services:A private memorial service will be held at Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, First Baptist Church of Spencer. Services will be held at a later date at Fort Mayer Chapel, with burial in the Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors.

Zelle Lowder Clarke
ALBEMARLE —Zelle Lowder Clarke, 81, 1522 Elmwood Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2000) Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 3, 1919, in Stanly County, Mr.s Clarke was a daughter of the late H.K. and Lilla Whitley Lowder. A graduate of Albemarle High School, she attended Pfeiffer University and was a retired police officer with Albemarle Police Department. She was a member of First Street United Methodist Church, the Fraternity Order of Police and the Order of Eastern Star, Albemarle Chapter 71.
Mrs. Clarke was married to the late Marion M. Clarke, who died June 1999.
Survivors include sons Marion M. Clarke Jr., Albemarle, and John S. Clarke, Melbourne, Fla.; daughters Gayle C. Hatley and Janis C. Whitley, both of Albemarle; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Nell Sinclair Deal
MOORESVILLE — Nell Sinclair Deal, 81, of Mooresville, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born June 8, 1919, in Iredell County, Mrs. Deal was a daughter of the late Simon Josuah and Lillie Shu Sinclair. She had retired as the owner/operator of Deal’s Grill after 30 years. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, Mooresville, and the Women of the Moose Mooresville Lodge no. 2012.
Mrs. Deal was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Deal.
Survivors include sons Carl M. and Tommy Deal, both of Mooresville, and Brent Deal, Huntersville; brother Bill Sinclair, Tallahassee, Fla.; sister Betty Moss, Hermitage, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Annie A. Goodnight
LANDIS — Annie Allen “Ann” Goodnight, 85, 707 S. Zion St., died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000)at her residence.
Born Jan. 8, 1915, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Goodnight was a daughter of the late William M. and Betsy Ann Hancock Allen. She had retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis, after more than 45 years of service. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kannapolis.
Her husband, Walter Wilson “Buss” Goodnight, died Feb. 20, 2000.
Survivors include daughter Lynn G. Poole, Thomasville; sister Mary Deese, Kannapolis; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Jerry Wayne Harwell
MOORESVILLE — Jerry Wayne Harwell, 67, Mooresville, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) in Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Born July 11, 1933, Mr. Harwell was a son of the late Ollie Wilson and Nellie Brady Harwell. He was employed for 28 years with Draymore Manufacturing Corp., where he was payroll manager. He also started Harwell Business Service, a bookkeeping/tax preparation service, 38 years ago.
A graduate of Kings College in Charlotte, Mr. Harwell served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a radio intercept operator stationed in Germany. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Harwell was a member of Vanderburg United Methodist Church, where he was finance chairman and auditor. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years as a troop leader and a member of the council.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Joan Wilhelm Harwell; sons Michael Harwell, Hickory, and Derek Harwell, Amsterdam, Netherlands; daughters Dana Beaver, Mooresville, and Vikki Cook, Sarasota, Fla.; brothers Frankie and Russell Harwell, both of Mooresville, and Conrad Harwell, Charlotte; sister Mabel Broadway, Mooresville; and four grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Jalah Lucretia Heglar, 90, formerly of 914 Laura Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at Britthaven of Kannapolis, after two years of declining health.
Born Oct. 31, 1910, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Heglar was a daughter of the late Lee and Elizabeth Blackwelder Heglar. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 for many years until her retirement and was a resident of Cabarrus County for most of her life.

Bert Dee Rufty
The funeral will be Thursday for Bert Dee Rufty, 76, Winston-Salem, formerly of Spencer, who died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000)at Brian Center, after a period of declining health.
Born June 26, 1924, in Spencer, Mr. Rufty was a son of the late Baxter Adam and Josie Curlee Rufty. Educated in the North Carolina School for the Deaf, Morganton, he also attended the Salisbury Business College. He had been employed with Carter Furniture Co., Salisbury, and Cone Mills before his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Salisbury.
Survivors include sisters Ethel Rufty and Betty Rufty McPheters, both of Winston-Salem.

The funeral will be Thursday for Estelle Thomason Ward, 86, of Salisbury, formerly of Spencer, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.
Born June 5, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Ward was a daughter of the late Charlie and Mattie Mae Barnhardt Thomason. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she was a homemaker and made wedding cakes and Christmas mints in her home. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, was formerly a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and in her early years she was active in the church circles.
Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Churchill Ward, who died March 3, 1999.
Survivors include sons Don Ward, Charlotte, and Charlie Ward, Salisbury; daughters Judy W. Roscoe, Salisbury, and Diane W. Johnson, Spencer; brother G. Melissa Ann Walls
FAITH — Melissa Ann Walls, 21, of Faith, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Oct. 5, 1979, in Rowan County, Miss Walls was a daughter of Susan Marie Mills Walls, Faith, and Douglas Eugene and Debbie Walls, Gold Hill. She was a 1997 graduate of East Rowan High School and a 1999 graduate of the Hair Stylist Academy. While at East Rowan she won several athletic awards in track, baseball and cross-country running. She was employed as a hair stylist at the Hair Cuttery of Concord.
Survivors, in addition to parents, include son Lucas Gaige Morton, Faith; sister Christine Opal Walls, Salisbury; stepsisters Chrissy Yates and Ashley Burchette, both of Gold Hill; maternal grandmother Jackie Mills, Salisbury; and paternal grandparents Carol and Eugene Walls, Salisbury.
