Garfield Adkins
EAST SPENCER —Garfield Adkins, 89, 321 E. Division Ave., died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000)at Spencer Health Care Center, Spencer, after a week of serious illness.
Born Aug. 22, 1911, in Rowan County, Mr. Adkins was a son of the late Charlie and Nora Ford Adkins. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from Bendix and Southern Railway.
A member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer, he was a member of the usher board and a former member of the kitchen committee. He was also a member of East Spencer Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Rebecca Davis Adkins; sons Garfield Adkins Jr., Salisbury Jr., Salisbury, and James Adkins, Charlotte; daughter Jennie Margaret Adkins, Florida; stepson Albert “Charlie” Mills, of the home; sisters Annie Perry and Helen Adkins, both of Salisbury, and Elsie Adkins, Old Fort; and a host of grandchildren.
Services:2 p.m. Monday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation:1:30 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Mary Carter
LEXINGTON —Mary Carter, 75, Bristol Street, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at Davie County Hospital, Mocksville.
Born July 17, 1925, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Mable Hairston. A homemaker, she was a member of Yadkin Star Baptist Church, where she served as vice president. She was also a member of the usher board.
Survivors include husband Codell Carter; sons S.M. Jordan Jr., New York, Samuel Jordan, Mocksville, and Keith Wilson, Lexington; daughters Mary “Emma” J.
Threadgill, Daisy J. McCandies, Joyce Ann Carter, Helen Eloise Carter and Sylvia Carter Neal, all of Lexington, and Kathy Carter, Winston-Salem; brother J.C. Hairston, Lexington; sister Geneva Winslow, Lexington; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Yadkin Star Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Bosier. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation:2:30 p.m. today, at the church. At other times the family will be at 402 Bristol St. Friends may call at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
Linnie Cranford Cartner
CLEVELAND — Linnie Cranford Cartner, 97, Cleveland, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000)at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.
Born Oct. 21, 1903, in Rowan County, Mrs. Cartner was a daughter of the late Joseph and Bell Deonhue Cranford. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she owned and operated Cartner’s Grocery Store in the Scotch-Irish township for a number of years. She was a lifelong member of South River United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Clarence C. Cartner, died Sept. 6, 1950; son Harold Cartner died Jan. 2, 1978; daughter Avin C. Cartner died June 16, 1991; and daughter Norma Harkey Everhardt died Feb. 14, 1996.
Survivors include son Boyden C. Cartner, Cleveland; daughter Joyce C. Simpson, Cleveland; sister Sally C. Turner, Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, South River United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brenda Newman, pastor, and the Rev. Shirley Jones. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30 a.m.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Lillian Irene Garver
LANDIS —Lillian Irene Garver, 96, 411 N. Meriah St., died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 29, 1904, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Jane Ginney Freeze and David B. Garver. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired as a winder at Linn Mills Co. She was a member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Services:2 p.m. Monday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Charles MacMurphy. Burial, Mount Moriah Lutheran Church cemetery.

GOLD HILL — Kenneth “Ken”Lawson Kerley, 27, Gold Hill, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000).
Born Jan. 30, 1973, in Kenosha, Wis., Mr. Kerley was a son of James A. and Patricia Scuffham Kerley, Gold Hill. A 1991 graduate of East Rowan High School, he was employed by Oakwood Homes.
Survivors include wife Kristy Sykes Kerley; son Cory Lawson Kerley, of the home; and brother James A. Kerley Jr., Salisbury.

Robert Wayne Litaker
ALBEMARLE — Robert Wayne Litaker, 53, 2162 Marwood Lane, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at his residence.
Born Jan. 1, 1947, in Albemarle, Mr. Litaker was a son of Robert William and Ruby Whitley Litaker, Albemarle. A 1965 graduate of Albemarle Senior High School, he was a forklift operator for Charlotte Pipe, Monroe. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Nancy Faye Munn Litaker; sons Michael Wayne Litaker and Matt Evans Litaker, both of the home; brother Larry E. Litaker, Albemarle; and sister Janice L. Blalock, Albemarle.

James Franklin Phelps
COOLEEMEE —James Franklin Phelps, 75, Main Street, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000)at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons.
Born Jan. 3, 1925, in Davie County, Mr. Phelps was a son of the late Frank and Alice Hutchinson Phelps. Retired from Erwin Mills, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War IIand in the National Guard during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Cooleemee First Baptist Church.
Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cherry Phelps, and a son, George Phelps.
Survivors include sister Rosie Mae Mayes, Cooleemee; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two-great-great-grandchildren.
Services:Graveside, 1 p.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, conducted by Chaplain A.G. Parker, with military rites by VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.

KANNAPOLIS —Nellie Williams Purvis, 79, formerly of East 10th Street, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000)at Avante at Concord.

James Westmoreland
MOORESVILLE —James Homer Westmoreland, 87, North Main Street, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000)at Vencor Hospital, Greensboro.
Born Aug. 29, 1913, in Iredell County, Mr. Westmoreland was a son of the late Robert H. and Ada Arthurs Westmoreland. He was a retired estimator/secretary for Mooresville Roofing and Heating Co., where he was employed for 50 years.
Mr. Westmoreland served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. Hewas a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include wife Dorothy “Dot” S. Westmoreland; sons Michael K. Westmoreland, Midlothian, Va.; daughter Elaine W. Foster,
Woodleaf; brothers Ray and Glenn W. Westmoreland, both of Statesville, and Robert C. Westmoreland, Morehead City; sister Marie W. Atwell, Statesville; and two grandchildren.

Mary Louise Wyrick
Mary Louise Wyrick, 80, Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000)at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after a week of serious illness.
Born Jan. 3, 1920, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Cletus O. and Mary Misenheimer Wyrick. A 1937 graduate of Boyden High School, she had been employed in medical administration at the Hefner VA Medical Center for 26 year before her retirement in 1982. Earlier, she was employed in the billing and shipping department at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, for 15 years.
She was a lifelong member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, where she had taught the children’s Sunday school department for 25 years. A Communion steward, she was a member of UMW Circle No. 2 and the Homemakers Sunday School Class.
She was also a member of NARFE and the Golden Years Club. She did volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross bloodmobile.
She is survived by a sister, Robbie W. Basinger, Salisbury.
Services:1 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. David E. Kelley, pastor, Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
Visitation: 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a niece, Mary W. Page, Salisbury.
