Tommy Lee Blevins

McGRADY —Tommy Lee Blevins, 65, of Dehart Church Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at his residence.

Born Sept. 25, 1935, in Wilkes County, Mr. Blevins was son of Sadie Shumate Blevins, McGrady, and the late Frank Blevins. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Pikes Electric.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Ruth Shumate Blevins, Salisbury; sons Corey and Rory Blevins, both of Granite Quarry; brothers J.C. Blevins, McGrady, Fred Blevins, Salisbury, and Noel Blevins, Ferguson; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Miller Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro, conducted by the Rev. Dean Crane, with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 1142. Burial, Dehart Baptist Church Cemetery, McGrady.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

John Cleveland Brumit

John Cleveland Brumit, 64, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 16, 1936, in Nashville, Tenn., Mr. Brumit was a son of the late Lawrence B. and Helen Thompson Brumit. Educated in Nashville, Tenn. schools, he attended the University of Tennessee of Knoxville and received his MBA from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served for 12 years as a pilot in the Vietnam War and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He was the business manager for Salisbury Motor Company for 12 year and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

Survivors include stepmother Virginia Atkinson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; son John R. Brumit, Salisbury; daughters Cheryl Brumit, Kannapolis, and Kimberly Murr, Concord; brother Duncan Brumit, Nashville, Tenn.; half-sisters Judy Simpson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Joan Dierks, Tallahassee, Fla. and Esther Dodd, Jacksonville, Fla.

Services:4 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Dale Steele, interim minister, First Baptist Church of Salisbury. Burial, Monday, U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

 

Ira Lee Burleson

OAKBORO — Ira Lee Burleson, 72, 20181 Newsome Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 1, 1928, in Oakboro, Stanly County, Mr. Burleson was a son of the late Ira Benjamin and Ethel Lambert Burleson. He retired was a construction worker for McDevitt &Street and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Shoe Burleson, of the home; daughter Cindy Jones, Albemarle; brothers James D. Burleson, Stanfield, and Claude M. Burleson, Albemarle; sisters Mary Burleson Herrin, Oakboro, Ruth Burleson Judd, Destin, Fla., Margaret Burleson Aldridge, Albemarle, and Shirley Burleson Giles, Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. today, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Hunter and the Rev. Yates Brooks. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will be at the home of Cindy Jones, 30101 Westridge Court, Albemarle.

Katherine S. Crutchfield

DAVIDSON —Katherine Sikes Crutchfield, 85, 400 Avenger Lane, Apt. 108, formerly of Albemarle, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Crutchfield was a daughter of the late Oscar Jennings “O.J.” and Delia Kendrick Sikes. A retired teacher of English and business at South Stanly High School, she was a graduate of Women’s College of Greensboro (now UNCG) and was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Elliott Crutchfield.

Survivors include son Edward E. Crutchfield, Charlotte; daughter Jane C. Garrison, Davidson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Charles Royal. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

William Anderson Harpe

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for William Anderson Harpe, 60, Sunset Drive, who died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000)at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Born June 19, 1940, in Davie County, Mr. Harpe was a son of the late Elbert H. and Hazel Anderson Harpe. A graduate of Davie County High School class of 1958, he was a salesman for Mocksville Builders Supply for 31 years. A member of First Baptist Church, Mocksville, he had coached Little League baseball and was a well known champion skeet shooter. He was a member of the Home Builders Association and former member of the Mocksville Downtown Revitalization.

Survivors include wife Brenda Day Harpe, of the home; son William Jeffrey Harpe, Mocksville; daughter Jennifer H. Neely, Mocksville; sister Judy Harpe, Mocksville; and one grandchild.

Services:1 p.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Charles Bullock and the Rev. Danny Shore. Burial, Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

John Young Hill

MOORESVILLE — John Young Hill, 61, E. Center Ave., died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000)at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born Sept. 17, 1939, in Mooresville, Mr. Hill was a son of the late George E. and Bertie Simmons Hill. He attended North Carolina State University and was retired from Burlington Industries, Mooresville, after 28 years with the company. He was currently employed at Home Products International of Mooresville. Mr. Hill was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Mooresville, where she served as deacon. He was a former member of the Mooresville Jaycees and the Mooresville Lions Club.

Survivors include wife Aloma Beaver Hill, whom he married June 29, 1968; daughters Abigail H. Beaird, Lawton, Okla. and Charlotte H. Tharp, Hinesville, Ga.; brothers Ray Hill, Pebble Beach, Fla., George Hill, Cherryville, Hugh Hill, Kernersville, and Ralph Hill, Charlotte.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Southside Baptist Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Dr. D. Steven Gouge. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Charlie Hugh Lakey

MOCKSVILLE —Charlie Hugh Lakey, 69, Horse Shoe Trail, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000)at Davie County Hospital.

Born April 14, 1931, in Davie County, Mr. Lakey was a son of the late Margaret Todd and Hiram Austin Lakey. He was retired from Amp, Inc., and was a member of Blaise Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Dot Hilton Lakey, of the home; sons Douglas H., and Charles M. Lakey, both of Mocksville; stepsons L. Keith and Robert A. Hilton, both of Mocksville, and Ronnie W. Hilton, of the home; daughter Marsha L. Dayton,Miami, Fla., stepdaughters Donna H. Morrison, Mount Ulla, Brenda H. Howell, Mocksville and Bonnie H. Brown, Mocksville; brothers Cecil and Clyde Lakey, both of Mocksville; sisters Ruth Lakey and Dorothy Walker, both of Mocksville; four grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Sellers and the Rev. Darrell Cox. Burial, Blaise Baptist Church Cemetery.

Girlie Hill Martin

LEXINGTON — Girlie Hill Martin, 72, 406 Dunbar St., died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000)at High Point Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 11, 1928, in Commerce, Calif., Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Hoyt Eugene and Ora Estelle Sanders Hill. Educated at Dunbar High School in Lexington, she was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Abraham Martin.

Survivors include sons Franklin Martin, Georgia, and Jimmy Martin, Lexington; daughters Diane M. Manuel, Southmont, and Yvonne Calhoun, Port Chester, N.Y.; brothers Dewey and R.F. Hill, both of Lexington; sisters Alma Bailey, Elnora H. Roberts and Mageline Crump, all of Lexington, and Mary Ann White, Cooleemee; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Saturday, New Hope Holiness Church, Tussy St., conducted by Bishop S.T. Greene and the Rev. Rufus Wyatt. Burial, 11 a.m. Monday, V.A. National Cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. Saturday, at the church. The remains will can be viewed today from 12-8 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

Patricia Graham Watkins

Patricia Graham Watkins, 73, Trinity Oaks Retirement Community, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000)at her residence.

Born Sept. 22, 1927, in Richmond, Va., Mrs. Watkins was a daughter of the late Andrew Hayes and Sally Boothe Crump Graham. Educated in Richmond, Va., public schools and Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Va., she worked for the Federal Insurance Dept. at McGuire V.A. Medical Center, Chubb Insurance Agency and the British Petroleum Co. office in Richmond, Va. In Salisbury, Mrs. Watkins was bookkeeper for the Waterworks Visual Arts Center and had served as a volunteer tutor for the Rowan Literacy Council. Mrs. Watkins was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury and the Church Circle no. 2, and served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Rowan Rippers Sewing Club, the Christian Reid Book Club and the Bridge Club.

Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Watkins, who died April 13, 1981.

She is survived by a stepson James T. Watkins Jr., Durham.

Services:Memorial, 1 p.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Griffis, minister. Members of the Rowan Rippers Sewing Club, the Christian Reid Book Club and the members of Circle No. 2 of First United Methodist Church will be seated together as a group in the church. The body will be cremated and the ashes will be placed in the St. Luke’s Columbarium.

Visitation:Visitation will follow the service in the reception hall.

EAST SPENCER — Garfield Adkins, 89, 321 E. Division Ave., died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000) at Spencer Health Care Center, Spencer.

FAITH — Annette Turner Lingle, 88, Faith, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) in Faith.
