Akilah Brianna Cash Hart

The funeral will be Friday for Akilah Brianna Cash Hart, 7-month-old daughter of Neika Cash and Alfonso Hart, 825 Ivy St., who died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Jan. 1, 2000, she was the first baby born in Rowan County in 2000.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include maternal grandmother Karen Taylor, Washington, D.C.; maternal grandfather Glen Cash, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and paternal grandparents Lebert and Alice Hart, Greenville.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, Memorial Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. T. Anthony Spearman.

The body may be viewed on Thursday at Rowan Funeral Service.

 

Philip G. Hyde

WINTHROP, Mass. —Philip G. Hyde, 46, Winthrop, formerly of Somerville and Dennis, died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000). His wife, the former Karen Hopkins, was a former Salisbury,N.C., resident.

Services: 9 a.m. Friday, George L. Doherty Funeral Home, Somerville. Funeral mass, 10 a.m. Friday, St. Clement Church, Somerville. Burial, Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Visitation: 4-8 today and Thursday.

Annie Lula Draughn Jones

MOCKSVILLE — Annie Lula Draughn Jones, 92, Highway 601 North, died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2000) at her residence.

Born Jan. 13, 1908, in Surry County, she was a daughter of the late Martha Simpson and John Draughn. She was a homemaker and a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Jones, who died April 3, 1978, and a son, Howard Bruce Jones.

Survivors include sons Lewis and Bobby R. Jones, both of Mocksville and Gerald Jones, Stockbridge, Ga.; daughters Irma Jean Shelton and Shirley Rollins, both of Mocksville, and Betty Cates, Houston, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 tonight, Bear Creek Baptist Church, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt and the Rev. Lloyd Rollins. Burial, 10 a.m. Thursday, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the church.

Grace Hopkins Kimrey

OAKBORO — Grace Hopkins Kimrey, 87, 6977 Mineral Springs Road, formerly of Depot Street, Albemarle, died Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Sept. 17, 1912, in Stanly County, Mrs. Kimrey was a daughter of the late Homer and Wincie Hinson Hopkins. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kimrey was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Kimrey, who died in 1967.

Survivors include daughter Roberta K. Kennedy, Oakboro; sisters Gerldine Hinson, Albemarle, and Imagene Stokes, New London; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, First Baptist Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial, Palestine Cemetery.

Ruth Cagle Lawrence

ALBEMARLE —

Born June 24, 1941, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lawrence was a daughter of the late Calvin and Ollie Polk Cagle. A graduate of Kingville High, Albemarle, she attended Bennett College, Greensboro. She was a retired employee of the Albemarle City school system.

She was a member of Saint’s Delight Church, Albemarle, and was vice president of pastor’s aid, member of the adult choir, ladies Sunday school class, Missionary Circle, kitchen committee and former Woman’s Day chairman. A registrar of the Albemarle 8th precinct, she was a member of Ivy Chapter No. 126 Order of the Eastern Star (Prince Hall affiliated), a member of the United Gospel singers, and the Millennium Club of Stanly County.

Survivors include husband John D. Lawrence Jr., of the home; sons Rodney Cagle, Steven E., Kelvin W. and John D. Lawrence III, all of Albemarle, and Raymond Knight, Badin; daughter Bridget Cagle, New London; brothers Rev. Willie Cagle and James W. Cagle, both of Albemarle; sisters Sadie Knight and Sarah Wright, both of Badin, Beatrice Cagle, Albemarle, and Margie Neely, China Grove; and 14 grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Saint’s Delight Church, Albemarle, conducted by Elder James E. Richardson, pastor. Burial, Stanly Garden of Memory, Albemarle.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Friday, at the church.

Kelsey Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Janie ‘Plunk’ Lewis

TOLEDO, Ohio — The funeral will be Friday for Janie Gaskins “Plunk” Lewis, 89, formerly of 617 S. Clay St., Salisbury, N.C., who died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000) at Fairview Manor Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 21, 1910, in Culpepper, Va., Mrs. Lewis, a daughter of the late Albert and Mary Ellen Carr Gaskins, was educated in the Culpepper, Va., schools. A retired domestic worker, she was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Her husband, Coleman Lewis, died in 1974.

Survivors include daughter Juanita S. Lloyd, Toledo, Ohio; brother James Patterson, Philadelphia, Pa.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, First Calvary Baptist Church, Salisbury, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Leamon Brown. Burial, National Cemetery, Military Ave.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Elizabeth Combs McHone

MOUNT AIRY — Elizabeth Sue Combs McHone, 53, 320 Lineback Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2000)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 17, 1947, in Surry County, Mrs. McHone was a daughter of the late Monroe “Doolie” Combs and Lessie Harrold Combs Beverly. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include daughter Patricia Ann McHone, Salisbury; sons Joseph Dean McHone, Myrtle Beach, and Michael Steven McHone, Mount Airy; sisters Brenda Reece, Salisbury, and Maxine Harrold,Mount Airy; brother DonnieCombs, Mount Airy; companion David Jarvis, of the home; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Moody Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Skyline Memory Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Edward L. Mitchell

LOS ANGELES, Calif. —Edward L. Mitchell, 79, 4122 Creed Ave., died Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2000)at his residence.

Born March 31, 1921, in East Saint Louis, Ill., Mr. Mitchell was a son of the late Lallie Ann Iola and Edward Mitchell. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School, East Saint Louis, and received his AB degree from Texas College and a master’s degree in physical education from Springfield College, New Haven, Conn.

Mr. Mitchell was athletic director, head football and basketball coach at Livingstone College from 1949-1959. Afterward, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked with the State of California until his retirement in 1986. He was World War II veteran.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by a son, Edward Mitchell Jr.

Survivors include son Wayland Mitchell, Anchorage, Alaska; daughter Holly Mitchell, Sacramento, Calif.; brother Willis Mitchell, Saint Louis, Mo.; sisters Katie Tillman, Upper Marlboro, Md., Iola Harrington, Belleville, Ill., and Gurthrie Barnes, Saint Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:10 a.m. Tuesday, Los Angeles, Calif.

Mitchell and Fair Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

 

Lillie Ramelle Lee Morton

OAKBORO —Lillie Ramelle Lee Morton, 90, 1345-A Highway 205 N., died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 2, 1910, in Stanly County, Mrs. Morton was a daughter of the late Bessie Thompson and Grover Lee. Mrs. Morton was a homemaker and a member of Big Lick Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters Reba Tucker and Carolyn Smith, both of Locust, Jean Huneycutt, Albemarle, and Bobbie Sedberry, Fort Lawn, S.C.; brothers Herbert, Vernon and Robert Lee, all of Norwood; sisters Carmon Furr and Hallie Lisk, both of Norwood; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Big Lick Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Farrell Shimpock and the Rev. Larry Linker. Burial, Oakboro Cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of Carolyn Smith, Pond Road, Locust.

 

Bertha Linder Proehl

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Bertha Linder Proehl, 76, of West Fork, died Thursday (Aug. 17, 2000) at Washington Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1924, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Francis Lewis Linder. She was a registered nurse and a member of the West Fork V.F.W. Auxiliary and Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, Ark.

Survivors include husband Henry O. Proehl; daughters Judy Jeffries, Philadelphia, and Taleah Cress, Rockville, Va.; brother James Linder, Salisbury, N.C.; sisters Eunice Freeze, China Grove, N.C. and Bernice Pridgen, Salisbury, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was buried at the National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Ark.

Hazel Boggs Trexler

GOLD HILL — The funeral will be Thursday for Hazel Boggs Trexler, 70, Gold Hill, who died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after two days of serious illness.

Born Sept. 30, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Trexler, a daughter of the late Harvey W. and Mary Jane Younce Boggs, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker.

A lifetime member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, she was in the church choir, served on the church council and taught the Hazel B. Trexler Sunday school class. She was also involved with WELCA and was a co-founder of the informal worship service for campers held by the church during the summer months. The services average 200 worshippers each Sunday.

Survivors include husband Glenn V. Trexler Jr., whom she married March 20, 1947; sons Douglas and JimmyTrexler, both of Gold Hill; brothers the Rev. Gilmer Boggs,China Grove, and the Rev. Jay Boggs, Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, St. Matthews Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.
