Eugene R. McKinley

Eugene “Gene” Randon McKinley, 67, Isle of Palms, S.C., died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000). Formerly of Salisbury, he had retired in 1997 as vice president of human resources at Food Lion, where he had worked for 20 years.

Born June 19, 1933, Mr. McKinley was a son of the late Dr. A. Randon and Lucille Richards McKinley. He received his undergraduate degree in economics and biology from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa., and also attended Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

A Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, he was a former member of the Salisbury Rotary Club. While living in Salisbury, he was also a member of the Salisbury Scottish Society and First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. A trustee of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, he served on the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges. He was also a member of the board for the Food Lion Credit Association. He was a past president of the Salisbury-Rowan Personnel Association.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was a current member of First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C.

Survivors include wife Debra McKinney McKinley; children Richard McKinley, High Point, Carol McKinley Myers, Duluth, Ga., Jere McKinley, Cary, Rene John “R.J.” Krier III, Salisbury, and Lynn Marie Krier, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; sister Mary McKinley LeRoy, Toms River, N.J.; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, First Scots Presbyterian Church, Charleston, S.C. Burial, Friday, near his hometown of Brookville, Pa. Memorial service, Sept. 6, a Wednesday, 11 a.m., First Methodist Church in Salisbury.

Memorials:First Scots Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 53 Meeting St., Charleston, S.C. 29401.

Nettie B. Blackburn

KERNERSVILLE — Nettie B. Blackburn, 97, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000)in Winston-Salem. She was the mother of Barbara B. Owens, Linwood.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Pierce Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Steve Roberson and the Rev. Mervin Garrison. Burial, Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the chapel.

Velma Craft Dietz

Velma Craft Dietz, 76, 3711 Mooresville Road, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The family will be at the home of a son, Robert “Bob” Dietz, 1185 St. Andrew’s Church Road, Woodleaf.

Ernestine Griffin

SANFORD — Ernestine Harrington Griffin, 63, 2541 San Lee Drive, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000)at her home. She was the sister of Katherine Smith of Salisbury.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Monday, Poplar Springs United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

 

Tonya Diane Knox

The funeral for Tonya “Ton” Diane Knox, 32, 120 Titan Drive, will be held Tuesday. She died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000)at her home after six weeks of illness.

Her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Houpe, Cleveland, were omitted from an earlier obituary.

Services:3 p.m. Tuesday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Stowe, pastor. Burial, Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery, Cleveland.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Janie Gaskins Lewis

Janie Gaskins “Plunk” Lewis, formerly of 617 S. Clay St., died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000)at Fairview Manor Nursing Center, Toledo, Ohio.

Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Callie Bringle Lingle

ROCKWELL — Callie Bringle Lingle, 77, formerly of Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at The Meadows Retirement Center.

Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lingle was a daughter of the late Lillie Little and D.C. Bringle. Educated at Mulberry School in the south Salisbury area, she was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School.

She had retired as a weaver at Cannon Mills, Plant 1,Kannapolis. Mrs. Lingle was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, Earl Carson Lingle, died Jan. 1, 1996.

She is survived by brother-in-law and caregiver Hoover Lingle, Granite Quarry.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Marcus B. Hovis III, associate pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today, Powles Funeral Home.

Kevin Ray Ragan

Kevin Ray Ragan, 36, 170 Miles Drive, died Friday (Aug. 26, 2000) at Rowan Memorial Hospital after a motorcycle accident on Interstate 85.

Born Oct. 15, 1963, in Davidson County, Mr. Ragan was a son of the late Brenda Ann Hudson and Charles Eugene Ragan. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a welder.

Survivors include son Marvin Spencer Scruggs, Granite Quarry; brothers Charles Eugene Ragan and Barry Wayne Ragan, both of Salisbury, and Michael Lane Ragan, Union Grove; and sister Carolyn Ragan Health, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Sy Ponds. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of his sister at 170 Miles Drive.

 

Clonnie Wilson Thomas

LOCUST —Clonnie Wilson Thomas, 83, 201 Summitt Ave., died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle. He was the father of Pat T. Caudle of Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, Locust. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Midland. At other times the family will be at the home in Locust.

 

Annie Kathleen Weant

Annie Kathleen Weant, 90, Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after several years of declining health.

Born April 24, 1910, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Nancy Winecoff and Charles A. Weant. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a graduate of the Lutheran Deaconess School in Baltimore.

She began her career at the Lutheran Settlement House in Philadelphia. She had also served as director of Christian education at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Baltimore; St. John’s Lutheran Church, Albany, N.Y.; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Wilmington.

She ended her career as secretary to the bishop of Southeastern Synod of Lutheran Church in Atlanta. After her retirement, she became a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Spencer.

She is survived by a sister, Ivy Weant Krohn, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Kraft, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Memorials:Calvary Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 23, Spencer, N.C. 28159.
