Bondsmen, police chase ‘skippers’

BY JENNIFER MOXLEY
SALISBURY POST

Two bail bondsmen chased a car of “skips” from the Ramada Inn Limited to the Happy Traveler Inn Thursday and then joined police on a foot chase around east Salisbury.

Police caught one man, Alex Rashe’ed Cowan, 19, of 1031 Short St., in Shoney’s parking lot.

He was wanted on outstanding warrants by the Salisbury Police and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department.

The Sheriff’s Department served warrants from March on Cowan for two counts of felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and two counts of felony sale of cocaine.

Cowan was one of the few suspects sheriff’s deputies did not apprehend during a recent drug-raid roundup.

Salisbury Police also served warrants from March on Cowan for misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, driving with a revoked license and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

Police added an additional charge of resisting, delaying and obstructing against Cowan after Thursday’s chase.

David Bradshaw of Swaringen’s Bail Bond and Frank Basinger of Jordan Bonding were looking for two suspects accused of skipping bond.

“We received information about a vehicle at the Ramada Inn on Jake Alexander,” Bradshaw said.

The bondsmen went to the Ramada Inn Limited to follow up on the tip.

“We sat back and watched. They got in the vehicle, and we pulled up to block them off,” Bradshaw said. But the driver of the 1988 Jeep took off, he said.

So, Bradshaw and Basinger followed the vehicle, which also had two passengers.

“Once we got on northbound 85, I called the police on my cell phone,” Bradshaw said.

“The Salisbury Police Department had warrants on them also, so they sent officers to assist,” Bradshaw said.

“The suspect vehicle pulled in to the parking lot of the Happy Traveler (on East Innes Street), circled around behind it, (and they) jumped and ran. So we started chasing them,” Bradshaw said.

Officer T. J. White caught up with Cowan in the parking lot of Shoney’s.

Police finally caught another person at Food Lion on Faith Road near Tinseltown Theaters.

The 15-year-old juvenile was not charged or wanted on any warrants, Bradshaw said.

Alonzo Gibson was the third suspect in the vehicle and managed to elude police and the bail bondsmen.

Bradshaw said bail bondsman Frank Basinger was looking for Gibson for skipping bail.
