Obituaries

            Percy Leon Banks

GREENSBORO — Percy Leon Banks, 52, West Meadowview Drive, died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Moses Cone Hospital. He had been seriously ill one week.

Born Dec. 6, 1947, in Davidson County, Mr. Banks was a son of the late Hershel Honel and Gendora Smith Banks. He graduated from Dunbar High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at Heckman Cabinets of Lexington.

Survivors include sons Percy L. Banks Jr., Lexington, and David Ray Banks, U.S. Navy station in San Diego, Calif.; daughters Valerie B. Clodfelter and Nevetta Curry, both of Lexington; brothers Larry and Tony Banks, both of Lexington; sister Donese P. Gaskins, Winston-Salem; and 12 grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Moses Caldwell. Burial, 11 a.m. Monday, Salisbury VA Cemetery.

Visitation: 3-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Remains may be viewed today from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

Estelle C. Blackwelder

MOCKSVILLE — Estelle Chaffin Blackwelder, 88, Wagner Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2000) at her home.

Born Jan. 20, 1912, in Davie County, Mrs. Blackwelder was a daughter of the late Celia Wright and James Pinkney Chaffin. She retired from Miller’s Restaurant and was a member of Ijames Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by husband Charlie Joe Blackwelder, son Elton Dwight Blackwelder and daughter Mary Estelle Woodward.

Survivors include sons Leslie, Harding and Lloyd Blackwelder, all of Mocksville, and Lester Blackwelder, North Wilkesboro; daughter Coleen Brown, Mocksville; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Ijames Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Faust and the Rev. Glenn Sellers. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Tonya Diane ‘Ton’ Knox

Tonya Diane “Ton” Knox, 32, 120 Titan Drive, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at her home. She had been seriously ill six weeks.

Born Dec. 19, 1967, in Salisbury, Ms. Knox was a daughter of Diane Montgomery Cureton of the home and John W. Knox of Salisbury.

She graduated from North Rowan High School and attended Salisbury Business College.

She worked at Freightliner in Cleveland and attended Gethsemane Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by stepfather Jimmy Cureton, Spencer; stepmother Penny N. Knox, Salisbury; maternal grandparents Archie and Evelyn Montgomery Lytle, Philadelphia, Pa.; paternal grandmother Luvenia Roach, Cleveland; daughter Yasmine Jequan Lenster, of the home; and brothers Jeffery W. Bost, Cleveland, and John W. Knox Jr., Sevren, Md.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Alma Huggins Armour

Alma Huggins Armour, 85, 1220 Forestdale Drive, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at Autumn Care Nursing Home following a period of declining health.

Born May 31, 1915, in Hickory, Mrs. Armour was a daughter of the late H.W. and Bertha Saville Huggins. She was educated in Statesville City Schools and graduated from Mitchell College.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was employed by Farmers Home Administration in Statesville and Salisbury for 40 years.

Survivors include husband Ervin S. Armour; son Lee Armour, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held this morning at First Baptist Church Chapel.

A graveside committal service will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, at a later date.

Nicholson Funeral Home, Statesville, was in charge.

 

Thomas L. Scala

Thomas L. Scala, 87, New Jersey, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000).

Born in Passaic, N.J., Mr. Scala and his wife, the former Anne Derenik, founded Finetex Inc. in Elmwood Park, N.J., and Spencer before he retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Italian Circle of Paterson and was active in scouting.

He was a parishioner of St. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Passaic, N.J., a member of Fidelians of America, North Haledon, and a former member of Paterson Elks Lodge, Paterson, N.J., and Spencer Order of the Moose.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Thomas L. Scala Jr., West Milford, N.J., and Robert H. Scala, Wadsworth, Ill.; daughter LaRue Porter, West Paterson, N.J.; sister Mae Mosca, Hawthorne, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held in New Jersey.

Memorials: Restoration Fund of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, 200 Third St., Passaic, NJ 07055.

 

Troy Fargis Weisner

GREENSBORO — Troy Fargis Weisner, 82, Greensboro, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday (Aug. 22, 2000) at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Born March 6, 1918, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weisner was a daughter of the late Annie Belle and Walter Fargis. She was educated at Spencer High School and was a former member of the Spencer First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Walter Eugene Weisner.

Survivors include husband John R. Weisner; sons John R. Weisner Jr., Clinton, Md., and James Harry Weisner, Greensboro; daughter Julia Ann McGinnis, Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was today in Greensboro. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home was in charge.
