Obituaries

            L. Alex Clark

The funeral will be Thursday for L. Alex Clark, 84, Louisville, Ky., formerly of Salisbury.

He was a former manager of Armour and Co.

Survivors include wife Mary Ellen Bradley Clark; a son; sister Elizabeth Mayes, Kings Mountain; and two grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Louisville, Ky.

Arthur Emerson Davis

Arthur Emerson Davis, 70, 1007 E-1 Greenpine Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla., died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville. He lived with a great-nephew at 1010 Sprucewood St., Kannapolis.

Born Dec. 2, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Rev.H.T. and Nealie Florence Griffin Davis. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was an interior decorator.

He was a member of Corriher Heights Baptist Church, Mooresville, but attended First Baptist Church, West Palm Beach,Fla.

Survivors include a brother, the Rev. WendellDavis, Statesville.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, West Corinth Baptist Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Randy Crowell. The body was cremated.

Visitation: At the church after the service.

Ruby Frye Fisher

The funeral will be Wednesday for Ruby Frye Fisher, 76, 225 Victoria St., who died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born July 29, 1924, in Davie County, Mrs. Fisher was a daughter of Beatrice Jenkins Frye, Mocksville, and the late George Ira “Bill” Frye. Educated in the Cooleemee schools, she was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

She was a seamstress for Rickman Manufacturing and T&V Specialities.

Her husband, Thomas Eugene Fisher Jr., died April 13, 2000.

Survivors include sons Thomas Eugene Fisher III and Roy Lutheran Brown Jr., both of Salisbury; daughter Linda Diane Fisher, Salisbury; brother George H. Frye, Mocksville; and sisters Elizabeth F. Lefler, Mildred F. Spry and Evelyn F. Trexler, all of Mocksville.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William Batterman. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Zana Benfield Gabriel

KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Wednesday for Zana Benfield Gabriel, 74, 304 Ebenezer Road, who died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at her home after four months of declining health.

Born Nov. 17, 1925, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Gabriel was a daughter of the late E.G. and Margaret Kellough Benfield.

She was formerly employed at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, weave room, and later retired from Stay-on in Landis.She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Concord.

Survivors include husband Cecil E. Gabriel Jr.; son Timothy V. Gabriel, Kannapolis; sisters Teresa Harrison and Maxine Phillips, both of Concord, and Stella Myers, Columbia,S.C.; brothers W.W. and Joe Benfield, both of Concord, and Robert Benfield, Mount Pleasant; and a step-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m.Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Gorney. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Ebenezer Road.

Horace Roby Linebarger

The funeral will be Wednesday for Horace Roby Linebarger, 80, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born March 14, 1920, in Lincoln County, Mr. Linebarger was a son of the late Ivey Johnson and Amelia Ballard Linebarger. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Retired from the city of Salisbury, he had earlier worked for Rowan Printing Co. He was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church and the Bost-Barringer Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post.

Survivors include wife Ruby Smith Linebarger, whom he married June 10, 1940; sons the Rev. Ivey Linebarger and Johnny Linebarger, both of Salisbury; daughter Louette Honbarrier, Salisbury; sisters Elizabeth Miller and Janie Bullins, both of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mark Anders, pastor, Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Cora Whitley Lisk

ALBEMARLE — Cora Whitley Lisk, 89, 1209 Wiscassett St., died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born March 3, 1911, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lisk was a daughter of the late Isreal and Maggie Rummage Whitley. She was a homemaker. A member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school for 35 years.

Her husband, Charles H. Lisk, died in 1968.

Survivors include son Bobby Ray Eps, Albemarle; daughters Betty Epps Higgins, Pinnacle, Shirley E. Schwartz, Charlotte, and Karen E. Winfree, Waynesville; stepson Bobby Lisk, Lenoir; brothers Lester Whitley, Albemarle, and Curtis Whitley, Concord; sisters Flossie Rummage and Hazel Whitley, both of Albemarle; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Mount Olive Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Nelson Wright and the Rev. Lonnie Whitley. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Cecil C. Midgett

GREENSBORO — Cecil C. Midgett, 704 Meadow Wood Road, died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Moses Cone Hospital after several weeks of declining health.

Lucy Poplin Pickler

ALBEMARLE — Lucy Camilia Poplin Pickler, 88, 625 Bethany Road, died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born May 31, 1912, in Stanly County, Mrs. Pickler was a daughter of the late Willie Ray and Rebecca C.Lowder Poplin. She was a homemaker and a member of Plyler Baptist Church.

Her husband, Coy Allison Pickler, died June 24, 1988. She was also preceded in death by two sons, R.C. Pickler and Ray Pickler.

Survivors include son Bobby Pickler, Flagler Beach, Fla.; daughter Lucille Walton, Albemarle; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Melton and the Rev. Delane Burris. Burial, Plyler Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Lucille Walton, 1300 Montgomery Ave.

Othar Alexander Sherrill Jr.

WOODLEAF —The funeral will be Thursday for Othar “O.A.” Alexander Sherrill Jr., 81, 280 Goshen Blvd., who died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born March 3, 1919, in Lincoln County, Mr. Sherrill was a son of the late Mary Cherry and Othar Alexander Sherrill and the stepson of Estelle Luckey. He was educated in the Lincoln County schools.

Retired from the city of Salisbury, he was affiliated with Cedar Grove AMEZion Church and was a member of Ebenezer AMEZion Church. He was a Mason and a member of Faithful Guide Lodge 376.

His wife, Esther Alexander Sherrill, died June 21, 1994.

Survivors include sons Terry Sherrill, Cleveland, Bobby Sherrill, Woodleaf, and David Sherrill, Salisbury; daughters Carrie Sherrill, of the home, and Levonia Davis, Atlanta; stepson Robert Harper, Cleveland; stepdaughters Helen Ellis, Woodleaf, and Doris Cuthbertson, Cleveland; brother James “Pete” Sherrill, Salisbury; sisters Ruth McNeely Salisbury, and Beulah James, Winston-Salem; several grandchildren reared in the home Kimberly Terri, Salisbury, Tyrone Blackwell, Mocksville, Christopher Sherrill, Woodleaf, and Keith Sherrill, Cleveland; three other grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Cedar Grove AMEZion Church, Barber, conducted by the Rev. La Dorsa Mays and the Rev. Kevin Williamson. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church

 

Cleelin Taylor

LEXINGTON — Cleelin “Shorty” Taylor, 74, formerly of Grimes School Apartments, died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born July 4, 1926, in Oklahoma, Mr. Taylor was a son of the late Clarence and Lizzie Taylor. Retired from Ingersoll-Rand, Mocksville, he was a member of Leonard Road Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Audrey Tussey Taylor, and stepsons Wayne Bennett and Donald Bennett.

Survivors include wife Martha Venable Todd, Shallotte; daughters Debra Koontz, Linwood, Patty Morris, Southmont, Angel Meadows, Asheboro, and Stella Wilson, Statesville; stepsons Doug Bennett, Denton, and Desi and Eric Tussey, both of Lexington; stepdaughters Rana Queen and Trudy Tussey, both of Lexington; brother Lewis Taylor,Faith; sisters Myrtle Taylor, Faith, and Mary T. Beam, Virginia; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Hepler. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Debra Koonts, 241 Old Pasture Road, Linwood.

 

Nellie Waddell

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Nellie Epps Isenhour Waddell, 92, formerly of Shue Road, who died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation of Rowan.

Born July 19, 1908, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Waddell was a daughter of the late James Franklin and Nancy Jane Forrest Epps. She was educated in the Montgomery County schools. Retired from China Grove Cotton Mill, she was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church.

Her husband, Robert Lee “Bob” Waddell Jr., died Dec. 16, 1987, and a son, Jack Junior Isenhour, died June 18, 1964.

Survivors include sons Glenn Isenhour, Mooresville, and Jerry and Melvin Isenhour, both of Augusta,Ga.; daughter Margie Kluttz, Mill Bridge community; stepsons Robert H. Waddell, Salisbury, and Larry W. Waddell, Martin,Ga.; sister Rona Corriher, Albemarle; 15 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Noon Wednesday, South China Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the church.

Eunice Morris Wagoner

ROCKWELL — Eunice Morris Wagoner, 86, Rockwell, died Tuesday (Aug. 22, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Bruneel Frederick Whirlow

Brunell Frederick Whirlow, 87, 905 Old Concord Road, died Monday (Aug. 21, 2000) at his home after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 22, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Whirlow was a son of the late Julius Carr and Mary Troutman Whirlow. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. Retired from Cone Mill, he served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II.

His wife, Christine Clement Whirlow, died June 25, 1981.

Survivors include stepmother Lola E. Eddleman, Salisbury; sons Jack Brunell Whirlow, Escondido, Calif., and Frederick W. Whirlow, Salisbury; daughters Betty W. Myers, Campbellsville, Ky., and Mary Catherine Myers, Salisbury; sisters Lois Fowler and Margaret W. Lindsay, both of Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Jim Harris.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Edgar ‘Ed’ Woodrow Young

SPENCER — The funeral will be Wednesday for Edgar “Ed” Woodrow Young, 82, 704 Seventh St., who died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Maple Leaf Nursing Home,Statesville.

Born Dec. 27, 1918, in Davidson County, Mr. Young was a son of the late Edgar Douglas and Addie Alverta FrankYoung. He graduated from East Spencer High School.

Employed as a car inspector for Southern Railway, he had retired after more than 40 years with the company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Spencer Masonic Lodge 543.

Survivors include wife Ruth Belle Hodge Young; son Edgar Woodrow “Woodie” Young Jr., Spencer; daughter Lynn Y. Overcash, Statesville; brother Martin Luther “Luke” Young,Concord; sisters Edith Y. Crowell, Spencer, and Violet Y.Sullivan and Hilda Y. Lambert, both of Florida; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Frank Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Annie Webb Raper

The funeral will be Wednesday for Annie Webb Raper, 73, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 11, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Raper was a daughter of the late David A. and Laura May Ennis Webb. She was educated in the Rowan County schools. She had retired as a cashier and assistant bookkeeper at the A&P that was formerly located on South Main Street.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Adult Sunday School Class and WELCA. She was a former member of the church council and the church choir.

Her husband, Raymond Earl Raper, died Sept. 14, 1994.

Survivors include sons Raymond Earl RaperJr. and Ronald David Raper, both of Salisbury; daughter Laura Raper Calhoun, Washington, D.C.; sister Evelyn Sigmon, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Messiah Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Hollar. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.
