601 S., died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Dec. 23, 1941, in Rowan County, Mr. Godbey
was a son of the late Paul and Lucle May Plowman Godbey. A member of Calvary
Baptist Church, he had retired from Ingersoll-Rand Co.
Survivors include wife Jackie Nifong Godbey; sons
Jerry W. and Roger D. Godbey, both of Mocksville; daughter Lisa M. Godbey,
Mocksville; brothers Paul Godbey Jr., Statesville, and Leon Godbey, Tacoma,
Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

Milton Virgil Clement Jr.
The funeral will be Tuesday for Milton Virgil
Clement Jr., 61, West Cemetery Street, who died Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000) at his
home.
Born Jan. 15, 1938, in Davie County, Mr. Clement
was a son of the late Milton Virgil and Cleo Patricia Adams Smith Clement. He
had worked at the Carriage House and formerly with Roadway Express in
California. He had been disabled for some time.
Survivors include brothers John Gordon Ammons,
Red Springs, Dallas Lee Ammons, Salisbury, and Aaron Turner Ammons, Greensboro.

Jerry Lee Eagle
Jerry Lee Eagle, 60, 350 Cline Drive, formerly of
North Arlington Street, died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of
Salisbury.
Born Aug. 2, 1940, in Rowan County, Mr. Eagle was
a son of the late Arnold Hubert and Naomi Hahn Eagle. He was educated in the
Granite Quarry schools.
A member of New Hope Baptist Church, he had been
employed with Cannon Mills for 17 years before taking a disability retirement.
His wife, Norma Ruth Thomason Eagle, died Nov. 6,
1994.
Survivors include daughter Teresa Ann E.
Funderburk, with whom he made his home in Salisbury; brother Claude Eagle,
Clemmons; and three grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home

Harley Sampson Estep
The funeral will be Tuesday for Harley Sampson
Estep, 72, Kannapolis, formerly of Salisbury, who died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000) at
NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after four years of declining health and two
months of serious illness.
Born May 31, 1928, in Salem, Va., Mr. Estep was a
son of the late Lewis Howard and Julia Ann Kirk Estep. He was educated in the
Huntington, W.Va. schools.
A member of the American Veteran’s Association,
he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a rancher while he
lived in Oregon and later owned a taxi company.
Survivors include sister Julia C. Jones,
Independence, Ore.

Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by Hefner VA Medical Center chaplain.

MOORESVILLE — James Wesley Lowrance, 79,
Charlotte Highway, died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at his home.
Born May 18, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Lowrance
was a son of the late Samuel A. and Nannie Blackwelder Lowrance. He had retired
from Sealtest Dairy Products, where he was a truck driver for 25 years. He had
also been an auto parts salesman.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he received the
Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theater Award for his service during World War
II.
Survivors include wife Phyllis Baxter Lowrance,
whom he married Sept. 7, 1982; stepdaughter Deborah Brooks, Kannapolis; stepson
Dennis Wright, Cleveland; half brothers Samuel M. Lowrance, Statesville, and P.Y.
Lowrance, Columbia, S.C.; half sister Gertrude L. Skipper, Wilmington; and two
step-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Verbena Vaughan Stallings, 86, 202

Born April 28, 1915, in Franklin County, Mrs.
Stallings was a daughter of the late Charles and Pattie Lou Howell Vaughan. She
had retired as a secretary in a medical office and was a member of First Baptist
Church, Kannapolis.
Survivors include daughter Margaret Moore,
Spartanburg, S.C.; and sister Mrs. J.V. Sowers, Kannapolis.

Carl Graydon Thomason
Carl Graydon Thomason, 95, formerly of 430 W.
Ridge Road, died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.
Born Aug. 20, 1905, in Rowan County, Mr. Thomason
was a son of the late John Washington and Sarah Fisher Thomason. He was educated
at Mount Pleasant Military Academy and had retired in 1967 after 44 years with
Piedmont Natural Gas Co.
A member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, he
helped build the new sanctuary, educational building and church parsonage. He
was a former Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder.
Mr. Thomason was a founding member of Franklin
Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of Franklin Lions Club.
A son, Harry Graydon Thomason, died in 1966.
Survivors include wife Marie Weaver Thomason,
whom he married June 29, 1929; daughter Mildred I. Ward, Salisbury; sister Ora
Pharr, Concord; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home
chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Summey, pastor, Franklin Presbyterian
Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.
