Obituaries

            Leon ‘Sarge’ Alexander

Leon “Sarge” Alexander, 58, 112A Overbrook Road, died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000)at his home after several months of illness.

Born May 12, 1942, in Salisbury, Mr. Alexander was a son of Lucille Allison Alexander Caldwell and Norman F. Alexander, both of Salisbury. A graduate of Price High School, he also attended Ryder Technical Institute and Shelder Transportation.

He was employed with PPG Industries in Lexington. Mr. Alexander was a member of Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, J.C. Price American Legion Post No. 107 and Western Star Lodge No. 9.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and Desert Storm. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mozelle Johnson Alexander.

Survivors include daughter Tina Alexander Rhodes, Salisbury; brothers Norman Alexander Jr., Ypsilanti, Mich., Willie Alexander, East Spencer, and Roscoe Allison, Salisbury; and sisters Elizabeth Watson, Carolyn Alexander, Constance “Connie” Alexander and Colis Phifer, all of Salisbury, and Joann Bratcher, East Spencer.

Services:1 p.m. Tuesday, Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Richard Johnson, pastor. Burial, National Cemetery, VA Medical Center.

Visitation:12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Harley Sampson Estep

KANNAPOLIS —Harley Sampson Estep, 72, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000) at NorthEast Regional Medical Center, Concord.

Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Wilson ‘Woody’ Lloyd

SPENCER —Wilson Theron “Woody” Lloyd, 86, 800 Seventh St., died Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000)at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after a month of serious illness.

Born Aug. 24, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Lloyd was a son of the late Bessie Oakley and Charles Wright Lloyd. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired as owner and operator, along with his brothers, of Rowan Hatchery in Spencer.

A son, James Theron Lloyd, died March 3, 1997.

Survivors include wife Mildred G. Lloyd; daughter Nancy Lloyd Myers, Beebs, Ark.; sister Cornie L. McGee, Spencer; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rick Cockerham, pastor, Calvary Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

 

‘Vernon’S. Shelf

KANNAPOLIS —Vernice “Vernon”S. Shelf, 89, 809 N. Bostian Ave., died Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000) at the Brian Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 17, 1911, in Faulkner Station, Ky., Mr. Shelf was a son of the late Susan Rogers and Charles Henry Shelf. Retired from the R.S. Braswell Co., he was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Lillian M. Shelf; son Bobby Shelf; daughters Jody Efird and Nancy Cline, both of Charlotte; half brothers Millis and Ward Rhodes, both of Kannapolis, and J.R. Rhodes, Stony Point; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:1-2 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

 

Frank Lee Stancil

CONCORD — Frank Lee Stancil, 84, 582 Harris St. N.W., died Saturday (Aug. 19, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Aug. 30, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Stancil was a son of the late Hattie Elizabeth and Charles Stancil. A former warper at Lock Mill, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include wife Ruby King Stancil, Concord; daughters Mildred Harmon, Salisbury, and Edith Stancil, Midland; sons Boyce and Wayne Stancil, both of Concord; sisters Mattie Sue Blackwelder, Salisbury, and Juanita Hartsell, Locust; brother Ralph Stancil, Locust; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Concord, conducted by Capt. Hank Harwell. Burial, Pine Bluff United Methodist Church, Stanfield.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

T.N. ‘Sonny’Stutts

MOORESVILLE —T.N. “Sonny”Stutts, 65, Sycamore Street, died Friday (Aug. 18, 2000) in Elkin.

Born Aug. 27, 1934, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Stutts was a son of the late Craven McCoy and Sarah Louise Goforth Stutts. He had retired in 1989 from the Mooresville Police Department, where he was a detective. He had also worked with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department and the Davidson Police Department.

He was a graduate of Central Piedmont Community College and Mitchell Community College. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he was a member of Rockwell Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police and the N.C. Law Enforcement Association. A Mason and a Shriner, he was an emergency medical technician instructor for the American Red Cross.

Survivors include wife Linda Susan Stutts; daughter Esther Shelly Reid, Mooresville; sons T.N. “Sonny” Stutts Jr., Statesville, and Darren D. Stutts, Cleveland; stepson Layton Eugene LaddIII, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother Ross Stutts, Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dwayne Barber. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home.
