Cassie Michelle Peeler
ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Cassie Michelle Peeler, 18, of Rockwell, who died Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2000).
Born March 29, 1982, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of Pamela Vanzant Baker, Salisbury, and Ronald Peeler, Rockwell. She had attended East Rowan High School and was a student at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. While at East Rowan she had played on the girls’ softball team. She played for the World Series Tournament Girls Softball team in Michigan and was a member of Rockwell Chaos Softball Girls’ Tournament Team. She was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith.
Survivors include step-father Michael Baker, Salisbury; step-mother Darlene Peeler, Rockwell; brothers Ronald Peeler Jr., of the home; stepbrother Brian Irby, Kentucky; sisters Hopelyn Faith Peeler, Salisbury; half sisters Jennifer Cranford, Faith, and Kimberly Cranford, Gold Hill; maternal grandmother Dorothy Vanzant, Kannapolis; and paternal grandmother Odessa Peeler, Faith.

Nannie Sue Laird Brock
MOCKSVILLE —Nannie Sue Laird Brock, 95, formerly of N.C. Highway 801 N., died Thursday (Aug. 17, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Born June 23, 1905, in Davie County, Mrs. Brock was a daughter of Mary Elizabeth Hanes and James William Laird. A graduate of Farmington High School, she was a homemaker and active postmistress of the Farmington Post Office from 1933-1936. During World War II she was employed with Union Carbide.
She was a member of Farmington United Methodist Church where she had been a member of the Ladies Aide Society and was the oldest living member.
Mrs. Brock was preceded in death by her husband James Hugh Brock.
Survivors include son James E. Brock, Mocksville; daughters Sue B. Allen, Mocksville, and Mary E. West, Creek Wood; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Eaton Funeral Service chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dianne Marsden and the Rev. Jimmy Myers. Burial, Farmington Community Cemetery.

Patsy T. Coningswood
BERMUDA RUN —Patsy T. Coningswood, 65, Bermuda Run, died Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2000) at her home after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 19, 1934, in Lexington, Mrs. Coningswood was a daughter of the late James E. and Nettie Basinger Thompson. She was a graduate of Lexington High School and a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Roy Coningswood, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Margaret W. Poovey, Winston-Salem; son Bill Wrenn, Lexington; and brother James F. “Jimmy” Thompson,Lexington.

Waddell Junior Dickens
LEXINGTON —Waddell Junior Dickens, 32, of Cotton Grove Road, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000)at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 3, 1968, in Edgecomb County, Mr. Dickens was a son of Willie Howard Burns and Dorothy Mae Dickens Burns, both of Lexington, and the late Waddell Belthy. A 1987 graduate of Lexington Senior High, Mr. Dickens was employed with T.L. Industries of Lexington and was a member of Buncombe Baptist Church.
Survivors include sisters Kimberly Lynette Whitehead, Lexington, Sherry Ann Belcher, Rocky Mount, and Penny Hargrave, Lexington; and grandfather Jim Burns, Lexington.
Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Files Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Cade. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.

Johnny Edward Holshouser
GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral is today for Johnny Edward Holshouser, 77, 318 Cleo Ave., who died Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.
Born April 25, 1923, in Charlotte, Mr. Holshouser was a son of the late Adam and Susie Kiser Holshouser. He was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, during World War II he served in the Asiatic-Pacific area and the Philippine Liberation.
He had retired from Republic Foil, Salisbury, after more than 30 years, and attended Maranatha Bible Church, Salisbury. He was a member of Granite Quarry American Legion Post.
Survivors include wife of 54 years Evelyn Beck Holshouser; son Michael Holshouser, Bermuda; daughters Joyce Kinsey,Concord, and Melissa Kovach, Salisbury; sister Dorothy Cauble,Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Earl Washington Martin
RIMERTOWN —Earl Washington Martin, 89, 4015 Parkmont Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 20, 1910, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Martin was a son of the late Virginia Pope and Wilson Creighton Martin. He was formerly employed with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Randolph Mills, and retired at 72 from Concord Lace Company. He lived in the Rimertown community most of his life. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and a life member of the Lutheran Southern Theological Seminary.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Mae Areitta Troutman Martin, who died March 10, 1990.
Survivors include daughters Phyllis Martin Campbell and Earlene Martin Cox, both of Concord; sister Mary Lillie Martin Bratton, Salisbury; brother Charles Elmer Martin, Mooresville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Geairl ‘Flat Top’McKee
MOORESVILLE — Geairl Dean “Flat Top”McKee, 88, of Kelly Street, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Genesis Eldercare of Mooresville.
Born Aug. 12, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. McKee was a son of the late Agnes McConnaughey and Fendy Claudie McKee. Mr. McKee was educated in the public schools of Rowan County and joined Sills Creek AME Zion Church, Salisbury, at an early age.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Edna B. Russell Murphy
KANNAPOLIS —Edna B. Russell Murphy, 83, 2112 S. Main St., died Thursday (Aug. 17, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born March 28, 1917, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Roxie Mae Blackwelder and Willie Pink Russell. She was retired from Cannon Mills Company after 48 years of service. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jadie Murphy, who died Aug. 5, 1982.
Survivors include son Stephen P. Kinney, Little River, S.C.; daughter Sue K. Thomas, Mount Pleasant; stepdaughter Joy M. Falls, Kannapolis; stepson Ray B. Thelma Readling Phillips
CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Saturday for Thelma Readling Phillips, 84, 209 N. Bostian St., formerly of 406 E. Ketchie St., who died Thursday (Aug. 17, 2000) at her home.
Born April 25, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late C.M. and Ollie Mae Readling Stirewalt. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Retired, she had worked at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, weave room.
Her husband, Clifford Monroe “Tip” Phillips, died May 19, 1993.
Survivors include daughters Jane P. Wyatt, China Grove, and Ann P. Hoglen, Charlotte; brother Glenn M. Stirewalt, Salisbury; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Alex Corey Ratledge
MOCKSVILLE —Alex Corey Ratledge, 21, of Milling Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) in Davie County.
Born Jan. 7, 1979, in Davie County, Mr. Ratledge was a son of Carol Wood and Jerry W. Ratledge of Mocksville. He attended Forsyth Technical Community College and worked with Tutterow Surveying. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers Jerry W. Ratledge Jr., Pfafftown, Randy, Brad and Clay Ratledge, all of Mocksville; and maternal grandmother Sarah Livengood.
