Betty Besig

KANNAPOLIS — Betty Jane Besig, 72, 211 Carwen Court, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Terina Aquanetta Ford

Terina Aquanetta Ford, 38, 1614 Standish St., Apt. 9-B, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at her home.

Edward Hewitt

KANNAPOLIS — Edward Woodrow Hewitt, 84, 1024 N.E. 7th St. Ocala, Fla., formerly of Kannapolis, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Estelles House, Ocala, Fla.

Born Jan. 27, 1916, in Kannapolis, Mr. Hewitt was a son of the late Carlos and Gettus Wilson Hewitt. He was an entrepreneur in several businesses.

Mr. Hewitt was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, DAV, Lions Club, all of Kannapolis. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.

His wife, Margaret Inez Jones Hewitt, died Aug. 17, 1980.

Survivors include sons Edward W. Hewitt Jr., Ocala,Fla., and Terry L. Hewitt, Deltona, Fla.; daughter Donna Hewitt Davis, Silver Springs, Fla.; sister Beatrice Hall, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman.

Visitation: None.

Lex Edward Honeycutt

ROCKWELL —Lex Edward Honeycutt, 75, Rockwell, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center,Concord.

Born Nov. 26, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Honeycutt was a son of the late C.Ed and Mary Hahn Honeycutt. He was a 1942 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and received a civil engineering degree in 1950 from Duke University.

He had worked as city engineer with the cities of Durham, Salisbury, Thomasville, Wilson and Lenoir. A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater.

He was a life member of the North Carolina APWA and AWWA professional associations. A former member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Gold Hill, he was a member of Ursinus United Church of Christ.

A son, Lex Edward Honeycutt II, died May 31, 2000.

Survivors include wife of 53 years Betty Barringer Honeycutt, whom he married June 4, 1947; son LenHoneycutt, Germantown,Tenn.; sister Ann Honeycutt Spence, Mount Pleasant; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Ursinus United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Jim Staunton. Burial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church cemetery, Gold Hill.

Visitation: The family will be at the home.

Ethel Myrick Jacobs, 77, Salisbury, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at her home.

Marguerite Mitchell Johnson, 72, 5369 Wildwood Drive, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) at her home.

Gary O’Neal King

ALBEMARLE — Gary O’Neal King, 67, 600 Fernwood Drive, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 4, 1932, in Union County, Mr. King was a son of the late Rev. William Benson King and Cornelia Broome King. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for over 50 years.

Retired after 33 years from Duke Power Co., he was an area supervisor. He retired after 35 years from the Albemarle Police Reserves at the rank of captain and had worked as a security guard at Stanly Community College for over 20 years.

Mr. King was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include wife Joyce Boone King; son Robert O. King, Albemarle; daughter Marla Lukach, Albemarle; sister Loutee Broome, Albemarle; brother W. B. King Jr., Albemarle; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday,Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Hunter and the Rev. Reese English. Burial, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Oakboro. Military rites by Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Fernwood Drive.

 

Mafrey R. Sessom

SHELBY — Mafrey R. Sessom, 74, 1918 Flint Hill Church Road, mother of Dennis Sessom, Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Hospice at Wendover.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Flint Hill Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30. Burial, Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Hugh Daniel Whitley

NORWOOD — Hugh Daniel Whitley, 84, 12293 Old Aquadale Road, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at his home.

Born July 10, 1916, in Stanly County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late Sylvanus H. and Mary Smith Whitley. He had retired from Carolina Solite.

A member of Aquadale Baptist Church, he was a past Sunday school teacher, deacon and choir member. He was a veteran on the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include wife Julia Greene Whitley; daughters Diane Burleson, Matthews, and Marsha Martin, Norwood; son David Whitley, Albemarle; sisters Lillie Belle Norton and Annie Lee Poplin, both of Albemarle; brother Roberdell L. Whitley, Summerville, S.C.; stepbrother Clarence Smith, Apple Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 today, Aquadale Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Ellis and the Rev. Sid Martin. Burial, church cemetery.

The family will be at the home on Old Aquadale Road.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.
