Joe Richard Burleson

ALBEMARLE — Joe Richard Burleson, 74, 35339 Pickler Road, died Friday (Aug. 11, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 4, 1926, in Stanly County, Mr. Burleson was a son of the late Idabelle Hahn and William Wesley Burleson. Mr. Burleson was a field supervisor with Employer’s Security Co.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a third class sergeant with the military police in Europe. He was a member of the VFW, the AMVETS and North Albemarle Baptist Church.

His wife, Betty Frances Morris Burleson, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons Rickey Joe, Bobby Alvin and Jeffrey Duval Burleson, all of Albemarle; sisters Isabelle Ledbetter and Edith Bowers, both of Albemarle; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Charles Bowers. Burial, Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

 

Antony ‘Tony’Burns

ALBEMARLE — Darius Antony “Tony”Burns, 30, Guam, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at St. Frances Hospital, Honolulu.

Born Sept. 12, 1969, in Stanly County, Mr. Burns was a son of Eddie and Theresa Burns Thomas, Albemarle, and Lee Manuel and DiannaHuntley of Charlotte. A 1987 graduate of Albemarle High School, he was an employee of Science Applications International, Guam.

Mr. Burns was a U.S. Marines veteran. He was a member of Victory Deliverance Center, Albemarle, and Prince Hall Masons.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Shareen Morrow Burns, Monroe; brothers Destrik Burns, Albemarle, Shawn Kendall, Oakboro, and Lee M. Huntley Jr., Charlotte; stepbrothers Daryl and William Warrick, both of Springfield, Mass.; sisters Devita B. Brown, Donelda Burns and Yvonne Barnwell, all of Albemarle; maternal grandparents Charles R. and Deloris Kirk of Fort Washington, Md., and Edward Steward, Suitland, Md.; and paternal grandfather Clayton Hailey, Wadesboro.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Victory Deliverance Center, conducted by Bishop Charles D. Thomas, pastor. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Helen Fletcher

MOUNT ULLA —Helen Misenheimer Fletcher, 78, formerly of 140 Warren Drive and a current resident of the Carillon Assisted Living Center, died Friday (Aug. 11, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health and six days of serious illness.

Born Dec. 22, 1921, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Ruth Tippet and Harry G. Misenheimer. A homemaker, she also worked for 10 years in Cannon Mills’ sheet department.

Three husbands preceded her in death. James C. Morgan died in 1966; Adam Carriker, in 1973; and Carl D. Fletcher, in 1995.

Survivors include daughter Doris Morgan Christie, Mount Ulla; stepdaughters Darlene Wade and Alice Chase, both of Concord; son Sammie Morgan, Sydney, Australia, and James C. Morgan, Salisbury; sister June Edwards, Rocky Mount; brother Harry Misenheimer, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Champion. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Concord.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

 

Edward Hewitt

KANNAPOLIS — Edward Hewitt, Ocala, Fla., formerly of Kannapolis, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000).

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Lex Honeycutt of Rockwell, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000)at NorthEastMedical Center, Concord.

Ida Wells Johnson

NEW LONDON — Ida Mae Wells Johnson, 79, 40049 Highway 740, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Dec. 27, 1920, in Chatham County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Willie and Rebecca Odoms Wells Moultry. Educated in the public schools of Chatham County, Ga., she was a homemaker. She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the Usher’s Board and the Missionary Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Johnson.

Survivors include son Lonnie Harris, New London; brother Ben Moultry, Savannah, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Carpenter, pastor. Burial, Oak View Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at the church.

Marion Thomas Lowery

CHINA GROVE —Marion Thomas Lowery, 81, 709-A Harry St., formerly of Yost Road, China Grove, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000)at Pell Care Nursing Home, Winston-Salem, after several months of serious illness.

Robert Lewis McCleave

EAST SPENCER — Robert Lewis McCleave, 67, 415 N. Shaver St., died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000)at Brightmoor Nursing Center, Salisbury, after three months of serious illness.

Born May 16, 1933, in Cabarrus County, Mr. McCleave was a son of the late Eula Brison and Roosevelt McCleave. Educated in the public schools of Cabarrus County, he had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon. He also did construction work. He was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

His wife, Marion B. McCleave, died Sept. 2, 1981.

Survivors include sons Dale Robert McCleave, Landis, and Jerry McCleave, East Spencer; daughters Roberta McCleave, Landis, Eula McCleave and Sylvia Murdock, both of Salisbury, Crystal McCleave, East Spencer, Tonya McCleave, Pageland, S.C., and Jacqueline McCleave, Kannapolis; brothers George McCleave, Salisbury, and Bernhard McCleave, East Spencer; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Michael David Raymer

STATESVILLE —Michael David Raymer, 43, 1372 Eufola Road, died Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 20, 1957, in Rowan County, Mr. Raymer was a son of Wavy Potts and Harry A. Raymer, Salisbury. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was employed with Fieldcrest Cannon.

Survivors include brothers Steve E., Terry L., Donald A. and Richard A. Raymer, all of China Grove, and Gary W. Raymer, Salisbury; sisters Martha Faye Hill, China Grove, and Dorothy L. Raymer, Minnesota.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Linn-Honeycutt FuneralHome, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. David Nelson. The body will be cremated.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Claude Elon Shealy

CONCORD — Claude Elon Shealy, 82, formerly of 401 Winecoff School Road, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center after six years of declining health.

Born April 25, 1918, in Gaston County, Mr. Shealy was a son of the late Lila Fulmer and Claude Baxter Shealy. He served for 22 years with the U.S. Navy as chief gunner’s mate aboard various ships.

Mr. Shealy fought aboard the USS South Dakota during the Battle of Guadalcanal on Nov. 15, 1942. He also served as a recruiter and remained in the Naval Reserve until his retirement in 1967.

He was a member of Flowe-Harris Presbyterian Church.

His wife of 54 years, Louise Mansfield Baker, died in March 1994. He was also preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Shealy.

Survivors include sons Patrick Fulmer and Claude Elon Shealy Jr., both of Concord; daughter Elizabeth Shealy Steffens, Concord; brothers Grover Shealy, Atlantic Highlands, N.J., and Leonard Shealy, Rome, Ga.; sisters Margaret Tedder, Gastonia, and Virginia Winfree, Shallotte; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Richard Keasler. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, with military rites by the U.S. Navy.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

Billy W. Styers

LEXINGTON — Billy W. Styers, 63, Riverview Boulevard, died Friday (Aug. 11, 2000)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after two months of serious illness.

Born May 27, 1937, in Davidson County, Mr. Styers was a son of William Paul and Myrtle Carrick Styers, Lexington. A graduate of Gardner-Webb College, he was a supervisor with Lexington Mental Health.

He was a member of Stoner’s Grove Baptist Church and attended Jersey Baptist Church. He was active with N.C. Baptist Disaster Relief, Salisbury.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Gail Aaron Styers; daughters Robin Shuman and Monica Walker, both of Lexington; brother Don Styers, Lexington; and four grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jersey Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mike Collier and the Rev. R. N. Hardin.

Visitation: 3-8 p.m. Monday, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Robin Shuman, 3844 Highway 8.

L.C. ‘Ball’Woods

LEXINGTON — L.C. “Ball”Woods, 56, Weaver Drive, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born May 6, 1944, in Cherokee County, S.C., Mr. Woods was a son of the late Sophie Phillips and Charlie Woods. A graduate of Dunbar High School, he had retired from Stroh’s Brewer in Winston-Salem.

Survivors include sons Kenneth Clark, Michael Evans and Christopher Bennett, all of Lexington;Jennifer Brooks Bazemore, Kernersville; brothers Evernee “Dank” and Beauford Woods, both of Lexington; sisters Veola Petty, Nennie Leverette, Pauline Smith and Mae Frances Curry, all of Lexington; and a grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. today, Files Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Cade, pastor, and the Rev. Rufus Wyatt.

Visitation:8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. today, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.
