Allen Jay Brumley

CONCORD — Allen Jay Brumley, 39, 3779 Elkwood Court, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000).

Born March 20, 1961, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brumley was a son of Paul and Martha Brumley, Kannapolis, and Carol and Larry Holcombe, Hickory. He was employed with Oakwood Mobile Homes, Richfield, for 23 years and with Sears Roebuck & Co. PMT department since March.

He was a member of New Testament Independent Baptist Church, Kannapolis, for 22 years.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Suzanne Carroll Brumley; daughter Leah Brumley, Concord; brother LaVonne Brumley, China Grove; sisters Lisa Shipman, Shelby, and Tammy Carter, China Grove; paternal grandmother Mary Brumley, Kannapolis; and maternal grandmother Cora Grass, Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, New Testament Independent Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Utley. Burial, church cemetery. Special private services were held today.

Ada Bryant

KANNAPOLIS — Ada Belle Isenhour Bryant, 93, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Marie Bunton

MOORESVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Marie Tevepaugh Bunton, 91, 1075 Deal Road, Mooresville, formerly of Kannapolis, who died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Care Inn Rest Home.

Born Aug. 2, 1909, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Bunton was a daughter of the late David and Sarah Johnson Tevepaugh. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, John Philmore Bunton, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Phyllis M. Haynes, China Grove; sons John Bunton, Burlison, Tenn., and Frank Bunton, Mooresville; sister Zula Swanson, Reids; 11 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice Allen Chunn

ST. ALBANS, N.Y. — Bernice Allen Chunn, 64, 108-40 176th St., died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000).

She was a member of Merrick Baptist Church.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Erwin Temple CME Church, Woodleaf, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Brenda Geter. Burial, church cemetery.

Esteher L. Futrell, 87, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Janet Katherine Gaither

MOCKSVILLE — Janet Katherine Gaither, 69, Turkey Foot Road, died Wednesday (Aug 9, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Born May 13, 1931, in Davie County, Miss Gaither was a daughter of the late David Lonnie and Oma Albea Gaither. She had retired from Hunter Manufacturing.

A life member of New Union United Methodist Church, she had perfect attendance in Sunday school for 38 years. She was a former member of Sheffield Calahain VFD Auxiliary.

Survivors include sisters Yvonne G. Ijames and Pat G. Moore, both of Mocksville.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, New Union Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Caren Morgan. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

KANNAPOLIS —Nell Reynolds Goodnight, 86, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Stanley Total Living Center, Mount Holly.

Malinda Rae Jacobs

THOMASVILLE — Malinda Rae Jacobs, 18, College St., died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000) at her home.

Born Sept. 24, 1981, in Rowan County, Miss Jacobs was a daughter of Linda Faye Jacobs, China Grove, and the late Ray Lee Canady. She was a student at Thomasville High School and employed by Mayberry’s Restaurant.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sisters Evinda Gwen Sheppard, Cooleemee, and Holly Lynn Jacobs, China Grove; grandparents Herbert and Dorothy Paris, Charlotte; and great-grandmother Ora Lee Jacobs, China Grove.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Cooleemee Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Dale Breidinger. The body will be cremated.

John Christopher Morgan

CAMPOBELLO, S.C. —John Christopher Morgan, 74, 125 Melvin Hill Road, brother of Jessie Morgan, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000).

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Petty Funeral Home Chapel, Landrum. Burial, Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Alesia Harris, 165 Silverado Ridge.

 

Thomas Frank Ridenhour

The funeral will be Saturday for Thomas Frank Ridenhour, 82, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six weeks of declining health.

Born Jan. 31, 1918, in Davie County, Mr. Ridenhour, a son of the late Marvin Deamer and Pearl Winecoff Ridenhour, was a graduate of Cooleemee High School.

He began work with Goodman Lumber Co. and later worked for Southern Railroad. In 1954 he started Ridenhour Supply Co.

Mr. Ridenhour was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where he was on the council. He and his wife made the communion wine.

Also a charter member of Spencer Moose Lodge 2019, he served on various committees and was governor of the lodge from 1991-1992. He earned his Legion Fellowship on June 1, 1996, and the Pilgrim Degree, the highest Moose honor.

His first wife, Lucille Beck Ridenhour, died March 7, 1997.

Survivors include wife Betty Conrad Ridenhour; son Thomas Frank Ridenhour Jr., Spencer; daughter Peggy Ridenhour Houston, Salisbury; stepson Ricky Bumgarner, Reeds; stepdaughter Belinda Nifong, Tyro; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William Batterman, pastor, and the Rev. John Taylor, Trinity United Methodist Church, Lexington. Committal, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum with rites by Spencer Moose Lodge.

KANNAPOLIS —Joseph Thomas Vinson, 73, 410 Gaddy St., died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at his home.

Dorothy Carter Warren

MOORESVILLE — Dorothy Carter Warren, 71, Towel Street, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1928, in South Carolina, Mrs. Warren was a daughter of the late Marion Henry and Katie Pearl Carter. She was a homemaker and an active member of Missionary Methodist Church.

Her husband, Elbert Alexander Warren, died Jan. 30, 1995. A granddaughter also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Nancy Lambert, Concord, and Patricia Smith, Darlynn Brotherton, Audrey Pennell and Mary Neilson, all of Mooresville; sisters Thelma Gardner, Mooresville, and Nellie Campbell, Cumberland, Md.; brother Robert Carter, Mount Holly; 12 other grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Martha Hall Woodward

Martha Henrietta Hall Woodward, 77, Aurora, Colo., a Rowan County native, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) in Aurora, Colo.

Born July 31, 1923, in Mount Ulla, Mrs. Woodward received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Women’s College, Greensboro. She was program director for the YMCA for 30 years and a member and elder at Central Presbyterian Church, Denver, Colo.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald L. Woodward, whom she married July 3, 1965, in Denver, Colo.; sister Louise Morrison, Davidson; and brother Turner Hall, Bear Poplar.

The body was cremated and a committal service will be held at noon today at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Horan & McConaty Funeral Service, Aurora, Colo., was in charge.

Helen Lowder Almond

ALBEMARLE — Helen Faye Lowder Almond, 76, 612 Hazelwood Drive, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at the home of daughter July Efird in Albemarle after a brief period of illness.

Born April 20, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Almond was a daughter of the late Mary Wadford and Marvin Lowder. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Daniel Roger Almond, preceded her in death.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include son Daniel Roger Almond Jr., Norwood; daughters Becky Almond Dowda, Miami, Fla., and Nancy McManus, Albemarle; half brother Jay Boone, Norwood; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, graveside, Fairview Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the 612 Hazelwood Drive home and at the home of daughter Judy Efird at 454 Anderson Road.

Mack Kenneth Beaver

KANNAPOLIS — Mack Kenneth Beaver, 86, formerly of 406 Eastway Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center, Concord.

Born May 25, 1914, in Moore County, Mr. Beaver was a son of the late James Victor and Margaret Verda McWhirter Beaver. He was employed in the No. 1 weave room at Cannon Mills Plant No. 1 for 55 years until he retired in 1980.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God and a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

His wife, Rozella Herman Beaver, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons Bobby R. Deal, San Antonio, Texas, Harold D. Deal and Johnny Beaver, both of Charlotte, Jerry T. Deal, Concord, and James M. Beaver, Kannapolis; daughter Rose Marie B. Holland, Indian Trail; sisters Margaret Richardson, Kannapolis, and Irene Albright, China Grove; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Hazel Flickinger Johnson

Hazel Utley Flickinger Johnson, 86, 1505 Bringle Ferry Road, formerly of 1336 Parkview Circle and White Rock Gardens, Granite Quarry, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury following several years of illness.

Born May 21, 1914, in Ravenna, Ohio, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Hazel Maude Smith and John Utley. She was educated in Ravenna, Ohio, schools.

She was a homemaker and had operated a day care center in her home.

She was a member of First Christian Church and Daughters of America in Kent, Ohio, which she had served as secretary. She had also been a Girl Scout leader.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Edwin Flickinger, on July 19, 1974, and by her second husband, Harold August Johnson, on Sept. 2, 1984.

Survivors include son David E. Flickinger, Kannapolis; daughters Mary Lou Flickinger McClintock and Diane Flickinger Earnhardt, both of Salisbury; stepson Thomas Flickinger, Salisbury; sister Dorothy Swaggerty, Portland, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, graveside, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Don Grier. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of daughter Mary Lou McClintock at 207 Brook St.

Lora Lee Smith Leonard

LEXINGTON — Lora Lee Smith Leonard, 84, 4355 N.C. Highway 8 South, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at the Linwood home of a granddaughter.

Born May 14, 1916, in Onslow County, Mrs. Leonard was a daughter of the late William M. and Minnie Lou Ennett Smith. She had lived in Davidson County most of her life and was a homemaker.

She attended Heavenly Sunlight Baptist Church and was a charter member of Faith Baptist Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Baxter Leonard, and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Leonard.

Survivors include daughters Barbara “Bobbie” Hailey and Elva Ward, both of Lexington; sons David Leonard Jr., Lexington, and William Daniel Leonard, Loris, S.C.; sisters Virginia Guthrie, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Irene Sealy, Wilmington; brother L.D. Smith, Gastonia; 19 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Faith Baptist Tabernacle, conducted by the Rev. Allen Smith. Burial, church cemetery.

Henry Winter Davis Short

Henry Winter Davis Short, 76, Charlotte, formerly of Mocksville, died Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 20, 1923, in Catawba County, Mr. Short was a son of the late Mabel Davis and Samuel Smith Short. He attended Catawba College and had been an independent insurance agent.

A Presbyterian, he was a veteran of the Eighth Air Force, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He also had been a prisoner of war while he was in Germany.

He was a member of Mocksville Masonic Lodge AF&AM 134.

Survivors include brother Sam S. Short Jr., Mocksville; and sisters Betsy Whitley, Atlanta, Ga., and Mabel S. Jones, Salisbury.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, graveside, Rose Cemetery, Davie County, conducted by the Rev. Neal Carter.

Visitation: At the home of his brother, Sam Short, in Mocksville, following the service. Eaton Funeral Service, Mocksville, is in charge.
