Minnie Cauble Bivens

ALBEMARLE — Minnie Peck Cauble Bivens, 105, 106 Mountain Vista Road, Denton, formerly of Albemarle, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Born June 27, 1895, in Stanly County, Mrs. Bivens was a daughter of the late James Addison and Mary Lou Moose Peck. She was a homemaker and member of Bethel Bear Creek United Church of Christ.

Her first husband, John Marvin Cauble, and her second husband, Clyde Bivens, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Jack Cauble, New London.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.Sonny Reeves. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Robie Jackson Brooks

MOCKSVILLE —The funeral will be Thursday for Robie Jackson Brooks, 79, Nail Lane, who died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Jan. 3, 1921, in Surry County, Mr. Brooks was a son of the late Jack and Myrtle Bates Brooks. He had retired from Baker Furniture and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Mary Snider Brooks; sons Robert Brooks, Cooleemee, and Larry and Jerry Brooks, both of Mocksville; daughters Virginia Burton and Velma McDaniel, both of Mocksville, and Janice Perry, Salisbury; brothers Clifford Brooks, Rural Hall, and Roy Lee Brooks, Cleveland; sisters Recie Nixon, Hazel Money and Doris Shores, all of Thurmond, and Thelma Mark, St. Louis, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Trinity Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. DarrellCox and the Rev. Jim Gryder. Burial, Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Pressley Carr

CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Thursday for Pressley Carr, 69, 123 Krider St., who died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after six days of serious illness.

Born Oct. 9, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Carr was a son of the late John and Lottie Parks Carr. A graduate of R.A. Clement High School, he had retired from KoSa.

He was a member of Allen’s Temple Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon.He had served as mayor pro tem and town alderman of Cleveland.

Survivors include wife Sallie Hargrove Carr; sons Capt. Pressley R. Carr Jr., Fort Bragg, and Gregory S. Carr, Charlotte; daughters Mondalyn Carr, Peoria, Ariz., Betty Carr, Greensboro, and Erin Carr, of the home; brother Roy P. Carr, Cleveland; sisters Hazel Biggers, Charlotte, and Margaret C. Turner, Cleveland; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Charles Lawrence. Burial, Allen’s Temple Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Bernice Allen Chunn

Bernice Allen Chunn, 64, 108-40 176th St., St. Albans, N.Y., a Rowan County native, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at St. Joseph Hospital, Flushing, N.Y., after several years of declining health and several weeks of serious illness.

Born March 13, 1936, in Rowan County, Mrs. Chunn was a daughter of Celessie Martin Allen, Woodleaf, and the late William Henry Allen. She was a graduate of R. A. Clement High School, Cleveland.

Employed as a supervisor at Aurora Plastics, New York City, she was a member of Meredith Baptist Church, St. Albans, N.Y., where she was in the choir and served as an usher.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include foster daughter Jeanette Logan, Charlotte; brothers Gary and Derry Allen, both of Salisbury, and William Allen Jr., Mocksville; and sisters Ollie Woods, Charlotte, Louise Payne, Woodleaf, Georgia M. Graham, Greensboro, and Mary Allen, Salisbury.

Ebie Merris Edwards

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Ebie Merris Edwards, 86, Winter Haven, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Liberty Commons Nursing Center, Salisbury, N.C.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Roxanne Snuggs Gulledge

ALBEMARLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Roxanne Snuggs Gulledge, 54, 151 Arey Ave., who died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Born in Stanly County, Mrs. Gulledge was a daughter of Philmore and Roxie Little Snuggs. She was a 1964 graduate of Kingville High School.

She was employed by Alcoa Badin Works, Badin, where she was a member of the 25 Year Club.

She was also a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she was church treasurer and a member of the usher’s board and the choir. She did volunteer work with the United Way and ARC.

A son, Eric E. Gulledge, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband George H. Gulledge; son George H.Gulledge Jr., Portsmouth, Va.; daughters Cheryl Y. Gulledge, Charlotte, and Toni V. Gulledge,Portsmouth,Va.; brothers Eddie and Henry Snuggs, both of Philadelphia,Charlie Snuggs, Norwood, and Adam Snuggs, Albemarle; sisters Annie L.Rustin, Indianapolis, Ind., and Verdell Harris,Albemarle; and a grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m.Thursday, Friendship Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Wall. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Marshall T. Hammett

CHINA GROVE — MarshallT. Hammett, 80, 1108 S. Franklin St., died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.

Virginia Hailey Heilig

Virginia Rose “Snook” Hailey Heilig, 86, 3565 E. Ridge Road, died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six days of illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Heilig was a daughter of the late Brook and Florence Simon Hailey. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and had worked as a domestic worker.

She was a lifelong member of Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, where she was on the Deaconess Board and a member of the Senior Choir and the Missionaries. She was also a member of Dorsett Town Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Frank Heilig, died Oct. 7, 1984, and a son, James T. Hailey, died April 27, 1976.

Survivors include sister Carrie H. Stoner, Salisbury.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Friday, Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Jacobs, pastor, and the Rev. J.L. Stowe. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Friday, at the church.

 

Ernest Donald Hodge Jr.

Ernest Donald Hodge Jr., 77, 201 N. Lee St., Yadkin House, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Dwight Wesley Huneycutt

NEW LONDON — Dwight Wesley Huneycutt, 70, 36478 Azalea Circle, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at his home.

Born July 6, 1930, in Stanly County, Mr. Huneycutt was a son of the late Jim G. and Cathy Coggins Huneycutt and a 1949 graduate of New London School. He retired as a sales representative from Matco Tool Co. and was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Betty Stone Huneycutt; sons Doug Huneycutt, Kannapolis, and Graham Huneycutt, New London; brother Joe D. Huneycutt, New London; and three granddaughters.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Bethany United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jeffery Sweeney. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

Robert Ernest Lambert

ALBEMARLE — Robert Ernest Lambert, 75, 1208 Pennington Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Broughton Hospital in Raleigh.

Born May 17, 1925, in Stanly County, Mr. Lambert was a son of the late Eli Marion and Emma Huneycutt Lambert. He was a former sheet metal worker with Lorch Plumbing and Heating Co. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church

Survivors include wife Doris Louise Andrews Lambert; son Bill Lambert, Milton, Del.; and sister Zora Mae Almond, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lakeview Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ted Whitley. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory. Military rites by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Pennington Road.

 

James Vargle Moore

LEXINGTON — James Vargle Moore, Thurgood Avenue, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Dec. 21, 1942, in Seneca, S.C., Mr. Moore was a son of the late Vargle and Catherine Watson Moore. He was a truck driver for Billings Freight and a Baptist.

Survivors include wife Thelma Vaughan Moore; sons Peter Moore, Winston-Salem, Stephen Moore, Lexington, and Anthony Moore, Raleigh; daughters Carol Rene Moore Ellis, Fayetteville, and Meleny Lee Ann Bobo, Seneca, S.C.; brother Billy Moore, Seneca, S.C.; sisters Cristine Mays and Mary Henderson, both of Seneca, S.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Files Chapel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Cade. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Forest Baptist Church cemetery, Meherrin, Va.

Visitation: The body may be viewed from 12-8 today at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington.

 

John Thomas Parker

RICHFIELD —John Thomas Parker, 68, 44101 Millingport Road, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 12, 1932, in AnsonCounty, Mr. Parker was a son of Mattie McRae and the late Thomas Smith. He was educated in the Anson and Stanly county schools. Retired from Lender’s Bagel Bakery, he was attended Saints Delight Church, Albemarle.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Corena B. Parker; sons Michael Scott, Albemarle, and Demetrius Parker, New Haven, Conn.; daughters Rosslind McNeil and Michelle Parker, both of Albemarle, Kim Edwards, Kannapolis, Sandra Dill, New Haven, Conn., and Donna Bradwell, Yokosukee, Japan; brothers Charles Smith, High Point, George Smith, Winston-Salem, Walter Smith, Monroe, and Tommy Parker, Greenville, S.C.; sisters Sherlie Holiness, New Haven, Conn., and Joyce Little and Mattie Price, Albemarle; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Saints Delight Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dr. James E. Richardson. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home on Millingport Road.

Fredrick Lane Smith

NEW LONDON —Fredrick Lane Smith, 57, New London, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000).

Born July 6, 1943, in Union County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Richmond Elwood and Radie Elizabeth Pope Smith. He was a woodworker with A and H Millworks.

Survivors include son Tony Lane Smith, Richfield; daughters Doris Jane Smith and Sandra Smith Troutman, both of Albemarle, and Rita Smith Martin, Norwood; brothers Walter, Robert and Billy Smith, all of Albemarle; sisters Lily Stoker, Albemarle, and Betty Garner, Denton; his companion of 12 years, Jewel Brinson Smith; and four grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Hoover Morton. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Rita Martin, 16332 Hickory Lane, Norwood.

 

Franklin Smith Jr.

The funeral will be Friday for Franklin Smith Jr., 56, 914 Brookmont Ave., who died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after several months of illness.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. Burial, National Cemetery,Salisbury. Military rites by Salisbury Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Josie McManus Streater

Josie Bell McManus Streater, 78, 908 W. Horah St., died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Jan. 19, 1922, in ChesterfieldCounty, S.C., Mrs. Streater was a daughter of the late Marshall and Reesa Gainey McManus. She was educated in the Chesterfield County schools and had retired as an employee from Salisbury City Schools.

She was a member of Locke Street Church of God, where she was a former Sunday school secretary, an usher and a missionary.

Her husband, Major Streater, died Oct. 17, 1998.

Survivors include sons James and Elton Streater, both of Salisbury; daughters Hattie Myers and Nellie Streater, both of Salisbury; sister Purnella Clyburn, Monroe; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

LINWOOD —Van Watkins, 73, Hilltop Living Center, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital, Lexington.
