Robie Brooks

MOCKSVILLE — Robie Brooks, 79, Mocksville, died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Margie Lee Murph Call

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Margie Lee Murph Call, 60, 1102 Cadillac St., who died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 1, 1940, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Call was a daughter of the late Andrew and Blanche Benfield Murph. A member of Zion Freewill Baptist Church, she had retired due to disability from Fieldcrest-Pillowtex.

Survivors include daughters Renee Carpenter, Concord, and Jennie Horne, Kannapolis; son Wayne Call, Kannapolis; fiance Eddie Greene; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Zion Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Vaudry Tucker. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Cadillac Street.

 

Pressley Carr

CLEVELAND — Pressley Carr, 69, 123 Krider St., died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Franklin Smith Jr.

Franklin Smith Jr., 56, 914 Brookmont Ave., Brentwood development, died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after several months of serious illness.

Born March 13, 1944, in Rowan County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Franklin and Hazel Lee Cockerel Smith. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he had retired from KoSa.

Survivors include wife Mary Helen Imes Smith; son Ricky W. Imes, of the home; daughters Andrea Smith, Salisbury, and Bonnie Mashore, Spencer; brothers Anthony and Donnie Davis, both of East Spencer; sisters Sally M. Smith, Spencer, and Ella “Lucy” Harris and Lora Green, both of Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Louis Grkman

YUKON, Pa. — Louis Grkman, 77, Yukon, father of James Grkman, Salisbury, N.C., died Tuesday (Aug. 1, 3000) at his home.

Funeral mass was celebrated Aug. 4 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church. The Rev. Paul R. Stivason was celebrant. Burial, church cemetery, South Huntingdon Township.

Beatty-Rich Funeral Home, Madison, was in charge.

 

Virginia Hailey Heilig

Virginia Hailey Heilig, 86, 3565 E. Ridge Road, died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Kenneth Lewis Jackson

LANDIS — Kenneth Lewis Jackson, 46, North Chapel Street, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 23, 1954, in Biloxi, Miss., Mr. Jackson was a son of Christine Hardman Jackson, Nicholson, Ga., and the late Robert Lewis Jackson. He was employed with B&H Steel, Charlotte, and was a member of Central Church of God, Charlotte.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son Robert Vanus Jackson, of the home; brother Jimmy Jackson, Gainesville, Ga.; and sisters Debra Crawford, Murphy, and Betty Holloway, Nicholson, Ga.

Services: 8 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Rabon. Burial, 11 a.m. Thursday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Willie ‘Chic’ Little

KANNAPOLIS — Willie “Chic” Virginia James Little, 87, Big Elm Retirement Center, formerly of 201 S. Rose Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 21, 1913, in Alexander County, Mrs. Little was a daughter of the late Jesse Thomas and Mary Linnie Dowell James. She was a member of Near Calvary Baptist Church, Concord, and a former employee of Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room.

Her husband, Oscar Franklin Little, died Dec. 31, 1987.

Survivors include sisters Mollie James Martin Cannon, Bunnie Hawkins and Edna Bumgardner, all of Kannapolis.

Services: Noon Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mike Mullis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Marie Chambers Norman

Mamie Chambers Norman, 65, 370 Manhattan Ave., New York City, a Salisbury native, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000) at her home. She had been in declining health for 12 years and seriously ill for four months.

Born July 19, 1935, in Rowan County, Mrs. Norman was a daughter of the late John Edward and Beulah Correll Chambers. Educated in the Salisbury city schools, she was a graduate of Price High School. She also graduated from nursing school in New York, where she worked as a registered nurse.

A daughter, Deborah Kirksey Graham, died in 1989.

Survivors include husband Frank Norman, Bronx, N.Y.; son Michael Kirksey, New York City; daughter Pamela Kirksey Biggers, Salisbury; brother Garland “Mickey” Chambers, Salisbury; sister Flossie C. McEachin, Bronx, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The body will be brought to Salisbury, where Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service will be in charge of arrangements.

 

Charlie E. Smith

FLORENCE, S.C. — The funeral will be today for Charlie E. Smith, 73, 2609 Homewood Ave., who died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at a Florence hospital after an illness.

A native of Stanly County, N.C., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Ralph Plato and Lou Eller Smith. Owner and operator of Mercury Motor Express, he also drove a truck for Brown Transport. He was a member of The Gospel Temple.

Survivors include wife Juanita Marie Hinson Smith; daughter Trudy Carter, Florence; sister Marie Link, Mocksville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Tuesday, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, N.C.

Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Jerry Wayne Trexler

The funeral will be Wednesday for Jerry Wayne Trexler, 59, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born July 18, 1941, in Rowan County, Mr. Trexler was a son of the late Toby Lee and Bessie Beulah Koontz Trexler. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired as an independent truck driver due to ill health.

Survivors include wife Phyllis Poteat Trexler, whom he married April 22, 1961; son Jeffrey Wayne Trexler, Gold Hill; daughters Sharon Ervin and Sonya Leonard, both of Salisbury; sisters Mary Helen Pearce, Pensacola, Fla., Beulah Mae Culpepper, Virginia, Pearl Kluttz, Faith, Hazel Morris, China Grove, and Pauline Wycoff, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Joe Black, pastor, Eastside Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Ruth Lee Ellis Winston

LEXINGTON — Ruth Lee Ellis Winston, 72, 109 E. Cross Road, died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at Britthaven Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 16, 1926, in Rowan County, Mrs. Winston was a daughter of the late John and Alice Ellis. A member of Smith Grove Baptist Church, she was a former employee of Burlington Industries.

Her husband, Walter A. Winston, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Ronald and Dale Winston, both of Lexington, Timothy Winston, Midway, and Raeford Winston, Philadelphia; daughters Patty Winston and Cheryl Ingram, both of Lexington; brothers Howard Ellis and Raymond Ellis, both of Salisbury; sisters Jannie Cannon, Salisbury, and Juanita Ellis, Far Rockaway, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, New Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Stewart. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Gilmore Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Annyce Leigh Worsham

ALBEMARLE — Annyce Leigh Worsham died Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at the Albemarle Lutheran Nursing Home.

A native of Ruffin, she was the daughter of the late William Jefferson and Mattie Fitzgerald Worsham. She attended school in Ruffin and received summer tutoring from her mother, studying Latin, French, English and music. A graduate of Greensboro College, she received a bachelor’s degree in music.

She also studied at the Juilliard School of Music, the Peabody Institute and the Chicago Musical College. She taught piano in Albemarle until she was 92. Many of her students became concert artists.

Mrs. Worsham organized a chapter of the National Guild of Piano Teachers in Albemarle. She was a faculty member of the guild and served two terms as president of the North Carolina unit.

She was a member of Ruffin Methodist Church and Central United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a niece and three nephews.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Ruffin Cemetery, Ruffin, conducted by the Rev. Daniel V. Miller.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home; and at 119 Worsham Mill Road, Ruffin, after the graveside service.

HAWAII — Harriet Wyllie, Hawaii, sister of Amy Bost, Salisbury, N.C., died Monday (Aug. 7, 2000).
