Samuel Binder Jr.Samuel
SamBinder Jr., 70, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born April 12, 1930, in Newark N.J., Mr.
Binder was a son of the late Gladys Slater and Samuel Binder. He was a graduate of Kearny
High School and the Professional School of Business, both in Kearny, N.J.
A retired real estate agent, Mr. Binder was
a partner with Sugerman &Blumberg Real Estate Co. in North Arlington, N.J., before
moving to North Carolina. In Salisbury, he also worked with First Cooperative Real Estate,
Century 21 and Isenhour-Freeman Real Estate Co.
After his retirement, he was employed part
time at the Crescent Golf Club. Mr. Binder was a member of the Chiefs Club at Catawba
College, where he also served on the board of directors. He also participated in NSSA.
Survivors include wife Ann Sharples Binder,
whom he married March 11, 1951; sons Dr. Steve S. Binder, Cornelius, and Dr. Michael S.
Binder, Huntersville; daughters Janet B. McCoy, Salisbury, and Nancy B. Myers, Rockwell;
and seven grandchildren.

Margie Watkins Collins
The funeral will be Monday for Margie
Christine Watkins Collins, 68, Rural Hall, formerly of Salisbury, who died Friday (Aug. 4,
2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.
Born Nov. 11, 1931, in Rowan County, Mrs.
Collins was a daughter of the late Katherine Athey and George Watkins. Educated in the
Rowan County schools, she had retired from Reads Uniform Service in Winston-Salem.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years,
Lawrence Frederick Collins; sons Fred and Steven Collins, both of Lexington, and Darrell
Collins, Winston-Salem; daughters Pamela C. Fortner, Salisbury, and Susan C. Thomas,
Concord; half brother L.H. Trexler, Holden Beach; half sisters Delores Bitner and Laverne
Trexler, both of Salisbury, and Rachel Beck, Spencer; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

Forsaken Drive, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 24, 1924, in Ashe County, Mr. Day
was a son of the late Bessie Combs Day Austin and the late Jake Day. He owned Days
Neon Sign Co., Kannapolis.
He was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist
Church, where he was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, RA leader and church training
director.
His wife, Martha Moore Day, died in 1990.
Survivors include sons Larry Day, Concord,
and Jack Day, Kannapolis; daughters Patsy Eagle Long, Salisbury; brothers Jimmy Guy
Austin, Kannapolis, and Jerry W. Austin, Wilmington; sisters Phyllis A. Edwards, China

KANNAPOLIS Vivian Stancil Fraley,
87, St. Andrews Living Center, formerly of Centergrove Road, died Saturday (Aug. 1, 2000)
at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born June 18, 1913, in Kenley, she was a
daughter of the late Jacob and Ziphia Stancil. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a
registered nurse.
She was a member of North Kannapolis
Baptist Church ,where she was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the
Womens Missionary Union.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Fred Fraley, and a son, Tom Fraley.
Survivors include sister Vira Parrish,
Smithfield, and two grandsons.

MOUNT ULLA Mitchell Frank Houck, 88,
220 Sloan Road, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 7, 1911, in Rowan County,he was
the son of the late Fannie Stephenson Goodman and George Fisher Houck. He was educated in
the Rowan County schools.
Mr. Houck had retired from Carolina Tractor
Co. after 25 years with the company. He was a member of Thyatira Presbyterian Church,
Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and Eureka Masonic Lodge 283, China Grove. He was a
U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include wife Florence Hix Erwin
Houck; sons Robert C. Houck, Mount Ulla, and Mitchell FrankHouck Jr., Salisbury; a

KANNAPOLIS Idelle Ivory Hurst Johns,
89, 1810 Concord Lake Road, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2000) at Transitional Health Services
after three years of serious illness.
Born July 29, 1911, in Chesterfield County,
S.C., Mrs. Johns was a daughter of the late Katherine Elizabeth Burr and Edgar Thomas
Hurst. She had retired from Cannon Mills in 1975 after 40 years with the company. She was
a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Carl Johns, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons Bobby Johns,
Salisbury, and Carl Johns Jr., Concord; daughter Shirley Johns, Kannapolis; brothers
William and Calvin Hurst, both of Kannapolis; sister Elese Davis, Kannapolis; eight
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Leazer, 57, Corriher Grange Road, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical
Center, Salisbury.
Born Feb. 1, 1943, in Iredell County, she
was the daughter of James C. Poole, Spencer, and the late Hilda Mae Benfield Poole
Trivette. She was an employee of Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, and a member of West Corinth
Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her father,
include husband Robert Leazer; son Terry Wayne Leazer, Mooresville; daughter Pamela Louise
Leazer, Mooresville; nephew Kevin Poole, for whom she served as guardian; brother James L.
Poole, Lexington; sisters Sissy Ethel Story and Mary Frances Leazer, both of
Salisbury; and a grandson.

MOORESVILLE Marie Masser MacDonald,
97, formerly of 2390 N. Enochville Ave., died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000)at Genesis ElderCare of
Mooresville.
Born Jan. 23, 1903, in Offenback, Germany,
she was a daughter of the late Margaret and Frank Masser. She was educated in the public
schools of Fort Plain, N.Y. She formerly worked for the Beechnut Corp. in Fort Plain,
where she also did volunteer work with the hospital.
A member of Concordia Lutheran Church,
China Grove, she was active in WELCA and the Myrtle Karriker Sunday School Class. She was
also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband, Archibald Hugh MacDonald, died
in 1984.
Survivors include stepson Alward Hugh
MacDonald, Mooresville; brothers Karl and Peter Masser, both of Fort Plain, N.Y., and
Frank Masser, Melinga, Australia; one grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral for Johnnie Reid, 83, 975 Union
Church Road, will be held Tuesday. He died Thursday (Aug 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born April 17, 1917, in Salisbury, Mr. Reid
was a son of the late Hannah Reed and John Wilbert Reid. Educated in the public schools of
Rowan County, he had retired from Harris Granite Co. and Safety Taxi Co.
A member of New Zion Baptist Church, he was
a member of the trustee board and the senior choir. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II,
Mr. Reid was a member J.C. Price American Legion Post No. 107.
Survivors include wife Dorothy Wilson Reid;
daughter Patricia A. Reid, Salisbury; sister Bonnie Gibson, Albany, N.Y.; and a grandson.

finishing department at N.C. Finishing Co. A lifelong member of Fulton United Methodist
