Arnold Joseph Schenk

Arnold Joseph Schenk, 78, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at his home following four years of declining health.

Born March 22, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Schenk was a son of the late Mary Graham and Raymond Ward Schenk. He was educated in Rowan County schools and retired from Isenhour Brick and Tile Co. (now Boral Brick) after 20 years of service.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had been a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 for 51 years. He was also a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Survivors include wife Ola Stricker Schenk, whom he married March 28, 1947; son Barry Ward Schenk, Salisbury; daughters Paulette Deal, China Grove, and Sylvia Moore, Salisbury; brothers Wilbert, Gilbert, Cecil and Norman Schenk, all of Salisbury, Clyde Schenk, Franklin, Va., and Donald Schenk, Kure Beach; and three grandsons.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Salem Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford, pastor, and the Rev. Carroll Robinson. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

Felton Brice Gordon

DAVIDSON — The funeral will be Saturday for Felton Brice Gordon, 71, 203 Armour St., who died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at University Hospital, Charlotte.

Born June 24, 1929, in Madison County,Ga., Mr. Gordon was a son of the late William Walter and Fairy Bessie Gardner Gordon. He was employed by Bridgeport Fabrics, Davidson.

Survivors include wife Patricia “Pat” Ellis Gordon; children Steve Gordon, Mount Pleasant, Sheila Bost, Mooresville, Janice Nash, Landis, Randy Gordon, Bristol,Tenn., Jerry Gordon,Little River, S.C., and Rebecca Watson, Newman,Ga.; stepchildren Tammy Gilliand, Cornelius, Denise Wright and Timothy Morrow, both of Mooresville, and SherryBelt, Davidson; brother O.B. Gordon, Kannapolis; sisters EvelynGreen, Norene Freeze and Sybie Mosley, all of Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Rabon. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Myrtle Virginia Martin

COOLEEMEE — Myrtle Virginia Martin, 87, Cooleemee, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Cynthia Wherry Parker

The funeral will be Saturday for Cynthia Wherry Parker, 83, 1135 Cooper Road, who died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 28, 1916, in Union County, Mrs. Parker was a daughter of the late William Coulter and Minnie Clark Wherry. She was educated in the Mecklenburg County schools.

A homemaker, she was a former member of Pitts Baptist Church, Harrisburg. She was a member of First Baptist Church, China Grove, since 1959, where she had taught the intermediate girls class and the Ruth Ladies Class.

Her husband, Frank Harold Parker, died Feb. 27, 1997.

Survivors include sons Wendell F. Parker, China Grove, Steve Parker, a missionary serving in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and Commander Dale W. Parker, Millington, Tenn.; daughter Joan P. Spurlin, Mount Airy; brother BenWherry, Camarillo, Calif.; sister Margaret Potts, Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Edward Daniel and son Commander Dale W. Parker, a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on Cooper Road.

J.V. Cornelia Kimrey Smith

ALBEMARLE — J.V. Cornelia Kimrey Smith, 77, 1131 Pee Dee Ave., died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Stanly County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late William David and Carrie Harward Kimrey. She retired from American and Efird Mills and was a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl Smith, and a son, Howell Ray Smith.

Survivors include brother Raymond Kimrey, Albemarle; sister Marie Owen, New London; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, North Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Grady Taylor and the Rev. Wyman Bolin. Burial, New LondonCemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home.

 

Thomas Watson Wright

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Thomas Watson Wright, 71, 8180 Freeze Road, who died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at his home.

Born April 25, 1929, in Olgethorpe County, Ga., Mr. Wright was a son of the late David M. and Nora Belle Puckett Wright. Retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 4 weave room and slasher room, he later worked for Jones and Presnell Studios, Charlotte.

Mr. Wright was a self-employed as a carpenter and in home repairs from 1970-1990. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Margaret Williams Wright; sons Thomas Jeffrey and David Michael Wright, both of Kannapolis; daughter Lori Ann McCoy, High Point; brothers John Herbert Wright, Coshocton, Ohio, Joseph C. and Bonnie Lee Wright, both of Kannapolis, and James W. Wright, Concord; sisters Esther Pullen, Royston, Ga., and Ruby Roberts and Sarah Frances Hilton, both of Kannapolis; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

KANNAPOLIS — Robert Wesley Beam, 75, 1406 Enochville Road, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Billie Ray Cook, 69, 1985 Mount Hope Church Road, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at his home.

ROCKWELL — Raymond Blanco Cozzen Jr., 79, Rockwell, died Friday (Aug. 4, 2000) at the Meadows of Rockwell.

Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Robert L. House Jr.

LINWOOD — Robert Lindsey House Jr., 51, Helen Drive, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a sudden illness.

Born Dec. 21, 1948, in Bristol County, Mass., Mr. House was a son of the late Robert Lindsey House Sr. and Irene Andrade House.

He was the garden shop manager for K-mart in Lexington.

Survivors include wife Linda Perry House; son Charles House, of the home; daughters Lora House, Lexington, and Crystal House, of the home; brother Michael House, Kentucky; and one grandchild.

Services: Memorial, 1 p.m. Saturday, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Al Gondek.

James Nathaniel Lanier

LEXINGTON — James Nathaniel Lanier, 99, 3763 Old Hwy. 52, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at Britthaven of Davidson, Thomasville.

Born April 26, 1901, in Davidson County, Mr. Lanier was a son of the late Phillip Bodenheimer and Ellen Eliza Gobble Lanier.

A lifelong resident of Davidson, he was a retired farmer who owned and operated Welcome Dairy for 55 years.

Mr. Lanier was a member of Beulah United Church of Christ.

His wife, Nona Michael Lanier, and daughter Peggy Sue Phelps preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Emogene “Jean” Cope, Lexington; sons Ralph Lanier, Dobson, Dwight Lanier, Greensboro, Wayne Lanier, of the home, and Jim Lanier, Welcome; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Beulah United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Dale Kennedy. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Kay Hobbs Leonard

LEXINGTON — Kay Hobbs Leonard, 54, 422 Country Club Blvd., died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 9, 1946, in Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Leonard was a daughter of Rita Kochert Hobbs, Lexington, and the late Hoyle Ray.

She worked as an executive secretary with RJR Nabisco before moving to Georgia.

Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Altrusa Club and Kennesaw, Ga., First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Kennesaw Singers, the Marietta Chorale and the West Cobb County Senior Chorus.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Ronald F. Leonard, whom she married May 6, 1967; daughter Carmen Grammer, Charlottesville, Va.; son Kevin Leonard, Charlotte; and sisters Linda Coble, Greensboro, Theresa Sinclair, Reidsville, and Elaine Littrell, Lexington.

Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Saturday, chapel of Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. David Shaffer, Dr. Sandy Beck and the Rev. Leonard Rollins.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at 500 Moore Drive.

Luvinia Walker Smyre

The funeral will be Saturday for Luvinia Walker “Mama” Smyre, 94, 310 S. Shaver St., who died Monday (July 31, 2000) at her home after a serious illness of a month.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, United House of Prayer for All People, conducted by Apostle C.D. Cooper, pastor, and W.E. Howell. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
