James Morrison Clark

James Morrison Clark, 76, of Salisbury, died Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2000) at his residence.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Correction

  • Sonja D. Barrett, daughter of the late Lawrence Andrew Durrette, lives in Benton, Ky. His obituary listed her as living in New York.

 

Alexander Lee Smoot

GREENSBORO — A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 6, for Alexander Lee Smoot, 88, 2868 Horsepen Creek Road, who died Monday (July 3, 2000) at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

A native of Salisbury, Mr. Smoot was the retired director of the Wesley Long Hospital pathology lab and widely known as a photographer, artist and musician. His mobiles are in collections and museums all over the country, including the Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury.

Mr. Smoot had given antiques collected by his mother, the late Daisy Smoot of Salisbury, to the Rowan Museum, and he and his first wife, the late Maggie Boylan Smoot, were major benefactors of Greensboro College.

Services: Greensboro College, at the Lee Center, 815 W. Market St., conducted by stepson, Rabbi Robert Freedman of Israel Congregation in Manchester, Vt., and Professor Joe DiPiazza, professor in the music department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

 

Lula Wilks Keaton

Lula Wilks Keaton, 87, 1331West Horah St., died Monday (July 31, 2000) at Brian Nursing Center, after several years of declining health.

Born May 26, 1912, in Ocenee County, S.C., Mrs. Keaton was a daughter of the late Mary Glenn and James Williams Wilks. Educated in public schools of Ocenee County, she was a retired domestic worker.

Mrs. Keaton was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury, a member of Senior Missionaries, a deaconess, and a past member of the financial board. She was also a former member of the Westside Community Club.

Survivors include husband Fernandas “Bud” C. Keaton, of the home; son Larry F. Keaton, of the home; daughter Hazel T. Keaton, of the home; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey is in charge.

 

Norman Schroeder

Norman Schroeder, 80, 224 Hillcrest Place, died Monday (July 31, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Elyria, Ohio, Mr. Schroeder was a son of the late Anna Ernst and Louis Schroeder.

A graduate of Fenn College in Cleveland, Ohio, he attended Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Schroeder served in the U.S. Army Air Force 8th division overseas during World War II. He was retired from the federal government Department of Navy as a contract specialist.

After retirement, he served as court commissioner in Denton and was a substitute teacher in schools. Mr. Schroeder was a member of the Rotary Club and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, both in Denton.

Survivors include wife Carolyn Coye Schroeder, whom he married July 10, 1948; sons Alan Schroeder, Salisbury, Eric Schroeder, Bethesda, Md. and Kent Schroeder, Boaz, Ala.; daughter Sara S. Annunziato, New York, N.Y.; sister Lois Schroeder, Parma Heights, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, minister, First United Methodist Church. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: None.

Pearl Stroupe Shaver

Pearl Elizabeth Stroupe Shaver, 94, of Rockwell, died Sunday (July 31, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

 

Luvinia Walker Smyre

Luvinia “Mama Smyre” Walker Smyre, 94, 310 S. Shaver St., died Monday (July 31, 2000) at her residence, after one month of serious illness.

Born Jan. 6, 1906, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Smyre was a daughter of the late Jeanette White and Watt Walker. Educated in public schools of Mecklenburg County, she was retired from domestics. Mrs. Smyre was a member of United House of Prayer For All People, Salisbury, which she had helped found. She was a member of the usher board, was a former president of the senior usher board and was the oldest member of the church.

Mrs. Smyre was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Roosevelt Smyre, who died Jan. 11, 1971.

Survivors include sons James Walker, Baltimore, Md., and Robert Smyre, Salisbury; grandson reared in the home Maurice Walker, Salisbury; daughters Alice Johnson and Norma J. Cole, both of Salisbury; sister Mabel Jackson, New York, N.Y.; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Farish Thomas

Evelyn Farish Thomas, 88, 540 Log Barn Road, died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Born July 3, 1912, in South Vienna, Ohio, Mrs. Thomas was a daughter of the late Louise Davie and C.B. Farish. Educated in South Vienna, Ohio, schools and Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio, she was a homemaker. She moved from Springfield, Ohio, in 1999 to Salisbury.

Survivors include son J.C. Thomas, Salisbury; brother Laddie Farish, Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, South Vienna Cemetery, South Vienna, Ohio, conducted by the Rev. Martha Cline.

The body will be moved from Summersett Funeral Home to Richards, Raff and Dunbar Memorial Home, Springfield, Ohio.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Loretta Walser

LEXINGTON —Loretta Walser, 77, 5943 W. Old Highway 64, died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born June 11, 1923, in Davidson County, Mrs. Walser was a daughter of the late Myrtle Hartley and Eddie Albert Potts. She was retired from Siceloff and was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church Choir.

Survivors include husband Elmer Charles Walser, of the home; son Larry Walser, Lexington; daughter Ruth Sharp, Linwood; brothers Grimes, M.E. “Mibb” and Calvin Potts, all of Lexington; sisters Juanita Baily, Cooleemee, and Shirley Shore, Twin Lakes; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Friendship United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Lucas and the Rev. Wade Wright. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Friendship United Methodist Church, 2840 Friendship Church Road, Lexington, N.C. 27295.

 

Robert Edward Weaver

Robert Edward Weaver, 79, of China Grove, died Monday (July 31, 2000) at his residence.

Born April 16, 1921, in Leicester, Mr. Weaver was a son of the late Kathleen Clark and Dr. William J. Weaver Jr. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from N.C. State University and was a retired chemist at Cannon Mills.

He was a member of Grace Bible Church, a member of Enochville and China Grove Lions clubs for more than 40 years. He earned the Cabinet Secretary Award in 1958, Lion of the Year in 1959 and 1970 and Outstanding Service Award in 1963. He was district 31-E governor from 1964-65, was a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1991 and John L. Stickley Fellow in 1995.

Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by a son, Robert “Eddie” E. Weaver Jr., who died April 25, 1993.

He is survived by his wife Frances Casper Weaver.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Grace Bible Church, conducted by the Rev. Alan Misenheimer. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home of a niece, Karen McCorkle.

Memorials: Grace Bible Church, Building Fund, 6725 N.C. Highway 152 East, Rockwell, N.C. 28138.
