Lewis J. Alsobrooks

Lewis J. Alsobrooks, 79, Salisbury, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at his home following two years of declining health.

Born Dec. 23, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Alsobrooks was the son of the late Lewis A. and Meda A. Cook Alsobrooks. Educated in Rowan County Schools, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a dispatcher with Paul Bost Trucking Company. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and a former member of the Salisbury Optimist Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lyerly Alsobrooks, of the home, whom he married May 7, 1950; brother William A. Alsobrooks, Salisbury; sisters Mrs. Wallace (Margaret) Williams, Winchester, Ky., and Mrs. Eddie (Josephine) Ryan, Betty Alsobrooks and Dorothy Alsobrooks, all of Salisbury.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fred Archer. Burial, City Memorial Park, with graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Arlene Louya Berrier

LEXINGTON — Willie Arlene Louya Berrier, 78, of County Street, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital following one year of declining health.

Born Feb. 3, 1922, in Davidson County, Mrs. Berrier was the daughter of the late John Q. and Willie Belle Fritts Louya. She was a former employee of Siceloff’s Mfg. and a member of St. Andrew United Church of Christ.

Her brother, Paul Louya, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Grady Berrier, of the home; son Boyd Lee Berrier, Lexington; daughter Willie B. Rich, Lexington; sisters Beulah Morgan, Barbara Bowers, Betty Shaw Blanch Crotts, Elizabeth Burcham and Ruth Sisk, all of Lexington; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Davidson Funeral Home’s Lexington Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Leonard, the Rev. Jake Sharp and the Rev. Don Eisinger. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

 

Eula Jean Elmore

MOCKSVILLE — Eula Jean Elmore, 53, Liberty Church Road, died Saturday (April 29, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a short illness.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Dr. James W. Hill

EMORY, Va. — Dr. James W. Hill, 90, died Thursday (April 27, 2000).

Dr. Hill taught at Emory and Henry College and was chairman of the Department of Education. Prior to moving to Emory in 1955, Dr. Hill taught at Elon College, Western Carolina and Appalachian State University in North Carolina and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. He received his bachelor’s degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, his master’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Educational Doctorate from Columbia University in New York. He taught and was a principal in North Carolina. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, was listed in “Who’s Who” in education and wrote articles on education that were published in several magazines, newspapers and other periodicals. He was the author of three books on education and religion. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Maye (Randall) Hill; sons William R. Hill, Denver, Colo., and John R. Hill, Washington, D.C.; brothers Bill Hill and Lee Hill, both of Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service, 3 p.m. Monday, Emory United Methodist Church Memorial Chapel at Emory and Henry College, conducted by the Rev. James Bennington.

Visitation: Following the service at the church. Farris Funeral Service of Abingdon, Va. is in charge.

Bonnie Ingram

KANNAPOLIS — Bonnie St. Clair Ingram, 84, 114 N. East Ave., died Friday (April 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center following a two weeks of serious illness.

Born July 1, 1915, in Alexander County, Mrs. Ingram was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Poole St. Clair. She retired several years ago from the sewing room at Cannon Mills.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh Ingram; daughter Norma Hodges, Kannapolis; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2:30 p.m. Monday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Rabon.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Russell Benjamin McIntire

Russell (Russ) Benjamin McIntire, 82, Salisbury, died Saturday (April 29, 2000), at his home following a period of declining health.

Born April 6, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. McIntire was the son of the late Frank Lee and Beulah Elium McIntire. He was a graduate of Salisbury Boyden High School and Catawba College.

Mr. McIntire was a radio personality for Salisbury station WSTP, then retired from Salisbury station WSAT. He was well-known in the area as host of WSAT’s “Speak Up” program at noon each week day.

Mr. McIntire was a member of North Hills Presbyterian Church, Salisbury Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, former president of the Optimist Club, Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 14 and a life member of the Salisbury Moose Lodge. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Jackson McIntire, of the home; son Russell B. McIntire, Kannapolis; daughters Mrs. Adam (April McIntire) Wensil, Salisbury, and Mrs. James H. (Frances) Harris, Weddington; and one granddaughter.

Services: Graveside, noon Monday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Bill Adams. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Beulah Honeycutt Morgan

Beulah Pauline Honeycutt Morgan, 88, Salisbury, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at Spencer Health Care, Spencer, following three months of serious illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1911, in Iredell County, Mrs. Morgan was the daughter of the late David Brown and Bessie Belle Morgan Honeycutt. Educated in Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School class.

Her husband, Walter Lee Morgan, died Jan. 9, 1997.

Survivors include sons Herman Lee Morgan, Sanford, Harold Lloyd Morgan, Rockwell, Carl Ray Morgan, Salisbury, and Walter Richard Morgan, Monroe, La.; daughters Mrs. Gary (Betty Ann) Bell, Salisbury, and Mrs. Bobby (Elaine) Gilland, Rockwell; sister Janie Bell McLaughlin, McKenney, Va; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Providence United Methodist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. William Summey, pastor, and the Rev. Shirley Jones. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at their respective homes.

Memorials: Scholarship Fund, Providence United Methodist Church, 6450 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

 

Rachel Robertson Morgan

ROCKWELL — Mrs. Rachel Cora Ann Robertson Morgan, 60, 612 N.C. 152, The Meadows, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 20, 1939, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Morgan was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Annie Martin Robertson. She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School and Livingstone College. She was a retired family care nursing facility supervisor. She was a member of Thomas Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include brothers Homer Robertson and Brother Gary Withers, both of Salisbury, Ephfriam “Bud” Withers, Atlanta, and Graline Withers, China Grove; sisters Ora Pinckney and Sister Tennette Wilkerson, both of Granite Quarry, and Vonnie McCullough, Joyce Lawson, Arwilda Barton, Ivery Jackson and Ollie Cruse, all of Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Thomas Street Church of Christ, conducted by Brother William Latten, pastor. Burial, White Rock AME Zion Church cemetery, Granite Quarry. Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Monday, Thomas Street Church of Christ. At other times, the family will be at the home of a sister, Ollie Cruse, 710 Wesley Drive in Brentwood Acres.

 

Mary Sidney Norris

FOUR OAKS — Mary Sidney Norris, 66, 4309 Harper House Road, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The daughter of the late Thomas Edison and Nannie Ola Taylor Sessoms, she was a native of Sampson County.

Survivors include her husband, Billy V. Johnson, Four Oaks; daughters Carolyn Jenkins and Frances White, both of Spencer, and Melinda Lewis, Lexington, Ky.; sons Randall Naylor, Salisbury, Sidney Weisbeck, Smithfield, and Michael Weisbeck, Middlesex; sisters Ida Pope and Edith Hall, both of Roseboro, Myrtle Cobley, Kenansville, Martha Carlisle, Autryville, Wanda Worth, Charlotte, and Ernestine Nunnery, Stedman; brothers Ralph M. Sessoms, Roseboro, and James R. Sessoms and Thomas E. (Junior) Sessoms, both of Autryville; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Butler Funeral Home of Roseboro, conducted by the Rev. James Manley Faircloth. Burial, Roseboro Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Butler Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Ida Pope, Lucas Road, Roseboro.

 

James Edward Russell

ALBEMARLE — James Edward Russell, 58, 843 Woodland St., died Friday (April 28, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1941, in Stanly County, Mr. Russell was a son of the late Lola and Raymond Russell. Mr. Russell was a retired pipe fitter with Superior Pipe and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Brian Russell, Rockwell, and Edward Luther Russell, Albemarle; sister Louise Thompson, Albemarle; and two grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Northside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Dennis. Burial, Norview Gardens, Inc. Norwood.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Wilma Martin Turner

Wilma Janet Martin Turner, 55, Salisbury, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 3, 1945, in Chickasaw County, Miss., Mrs. Turner was the daughter of the late Dwight Lamon Martin Sr. and Maggie Mae Gunter Martin. A graduate of Fitzgerald High School in Fitzgerald, Ga., she received a degree from Salisbury Business College. An Avon sales person, she also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir, and a member of DAV.

Her husband, Rochelle Harris Turner, died Nov. 2, 1992.

Survivors include brother Robert P. Martin, Cleveland, Miss.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Tuesday, U.S. National Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Max Mills. Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
