Rowan athletes seeded in meet

Rowan County high school athletes are seeded high in three regional track and field meets scheduled Saturday.

North Rowan and Salisbury will competing in the 2A Midwest Regional at Mount Pleasant, East Rowan and West Rowan in the 3A Midwest Regional at East, and South Rowan in the 4A Midwest Regional at Mount Tabor.

North Rowan’s girls and boys will be going after regional titles at Mount Pleasant.

The North boys, coached by Robert Steele, have six top seeds for the 2A meet, including Malachi Brown, who has been slowed down by an injury. He is seeded first in the 200- and 400-meter races with times of 22.36 and 49.70, respectively.

The Cavaliers’ Brian Alford is No. 1 in the shot put (52-5), and teammate Anthony Byrd is tops in the long jump (21-7 1

North’s 800 (1:31.26) and 1600 (3:29.50) relay teams are also seeded first.

Salisbury’s Michael Gaus (4:38.23 in the 1600) is seeded first. He and David Bost, seeded high in the 3200, have been fighting injuries. AustinImes is seeded high in the discus.

For North’s girls, coached by Brian Mills, All-American LaTasha Pharr will be favored in the long jump(19 feet), triple jump (40-1), 100 hurdles (13.31) and 300 hurdles (44.29). A junior and the defending state champion in all four events, Pharr is seeded first in each event.

Teammate Garette Hunter is first in the discus (104-8) and second in the shot put. North is also first in the 400 relay (51.38).

Salisbury’s girls are No. 1 in the 800 relay (1:49.50).

Other high seeds for 2A girls include North’s MoriahJones (100, long jump) and Enley Lewis (400) and Salisbury’s Devora Gardin (long jump), Anna Griffis(3200) and Ternisha Charleston(200).

East’s girls, coached by Lu Gamewell, and West’s boys, coached byRalph Ellis, will be bidding for regional titles at East.

The only top seeds for the East’s Rowan County champion girls team are Tiffany Bost and Mikal Ann Fesperman, who have pole vaulted 7-6.

East’s Brooke Misenheimer (1600, 3200), Brianna Mundy(400) and the 1600 and 3200 relay teams are all seeded in the top four.

West’s sensational freshman, Sherina Steele, is seeded in the top four in the long jump, triple jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, while teammate Telea Vinson is high in the 400.

For West’s boys, Justin Davis is No. 1 in the triple jump (45-7) and second in the long jump.

East’s DannyMisenheimer is the No. 1 seed in both the shot put (57-9) and discus (143 feet).

West’s Josh Houghton(800, 1600) and East freshman PhillipJohnson(3200) are other top seeds.

South’s Ernie Wiggins and Joe Finney are top seeded in the 100 (10.22) and shot put (50 feet), respectively, at Mount Tabor.

Other high seeds in the 4A boys meet include Wiggins in the 200, Finney in the discus and Shane Booth in the triple jump.

For South’s girls, Brittney Gaddy (discus), Katie Willett (800) and Amanda Shirley(pole vault) are all seeded second.
