MOORESVILLE The funeral will be Saturday for
Elizabeth Linker Carrigan, 99, Oakridge Farm Highway, who died Wednesday (April 26, 2000)
at her home.
Born June 14, 1900, in Iredell County, Mrs. Carrigan was a
daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Margaret Jane Neel Linker. She attended
LittletonCollege and MitchellCommunity College. A homemaker, she also taught school at
Springdale School in the Doolie community in the 1920s.
She was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church, where she
served as pianist and Sunday school teacher. She was also active with the Presbyterian
Women and assisted with vacation Bible school.
A member of the Tomato Club, a forerunner of the 4-H Club
in Iredell County, Mrs. Carrigan was a charter member of the Oakridge Homemakers Club. She
was an honorary member of Brawley Extension Community Association and a volunteer with the
American Red Cross.
Her husband, Bruce Reid Carrigan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Wade Pharr Carrigan, Mooresville;
daughters Mrs. F. Boyd (Agnes)Ulrich, Newark, Del., and Mrs. Frank (Betty)Alexander,
Mooresville; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Prospect
Presbyterian Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joanne Hull and the Rev. Jan Edmiston.

MOCKSVILLE Lillie Berrier Dwiggins, 89, Mumford
Street, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville after several months
of declining health.
Born Feb. 24, 1911, in Davidson County, Mrs. Dwiggins was a
daughter of the late Venus A. and Faithie Hege Berrier. She was a 1930 graduate of Arcadia
High School.
A retired nurses assistant at Davie County Hospital,
she was previously employed at Hanes Hosiery and Blackwelder Manufacturing. She was a
member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
Survivors include husband Marshall Everette Dwiggins; son
Gwyn Dwiggins, Mocksville; two grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Rose Cemetery,
conducted by the Rev.Steve Hedgecock, the Rev. Bill Davis and the Rev. Lewis Phillips.
Visitation: The family will be at the home on Mumford
Drive.

sister of Ruth Hinson, Albemarle, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Stanly Memorial
Hospital, Albemarle.

Floyd McKinley Leach
The funeral will be Saturday for Floyd McKinley Leach, 82,
Salisbury, who died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 31, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Leach was a son of
the late Oscar M. and Annie Baldwin Leach. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.
He worked for the city of Salisbury for 25 years before his
retirement. He had earlier been employed with Macanal Mills and Cannon Mills. He attended
Southside Baptist Church.
His wife, Pearl Eller Leach, died Nov. 4, 1992.
Survivors include daughter Peggy Hoffner, Salisbury; two
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m.Saturday, Southside Baptist Church,
conducted by the Rev. Rick Brown. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial,
Rowan Memorial Park.

other times the family will be at the home of daughter Peggy Hoffner.

OAKBORO Jewell Blake Smith, 65, 12957 St. Martin
Road, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.
Born Aug. 4, 1934, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Smith was a
daughter of the late Ernest Edgar and Effie Mae Perry Blake. She was a homemaker and a
member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Rayvon W. Smith; sons Clint
Smith, Albemarle, and Randy and Todd Smith, both of Oakboro; daughter Donna Tucker,
Mooresville; twin brother Joe Blake, Albemarle; other brothers Bob Blake, Albemarle, and
Leon Blake, Oakboro; sister Lucille Morgan, Burnsville; seven grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
Services were to be held at 11 this morning at Hartsell
Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, with the Rev. Phillip Hunter and the Rev. Bobby Blake
officiating. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.
Walter Budgie Thompson
MOORESVILLE Walter Budgie William
Thompson, 78, Brawley School Road, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional
Medical Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1921, in Iredell County, Mr. Thompson was a
son of the late Lawrence A. and Sally Honeycutt Thompson. He owned and operated Thompson
Landscaping for more than 30 years before his retirement.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Co-founder of
Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department, he was its first chief. He served on the board of
directors and as treasurer of the Fire Department for 26 years. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II.
Survivors include wife Edith Nixon Thompson, whom he
married April 25, 1942; daughters Mrs. Mike (Pat)Campbell and Mrs. Rick (Pam)Rudisill,
both of Mooresville; sister Sarah Thompson Stutts, Mooresville; brothers Burl C. and
Lamont Thompson, both of Mooresville; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church,
conducted by Dr. S. Edwin Lewis and Dr. Fred A. Coates. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Lovie Ellis Williams
MOCKSVILLE The funeral will be Saturday for Lovie
Ellis Williams, 100, who died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at her home.
Born Oct. 15, 1899, in Davie County, Mrs. Williams was a
daughter of the late Abraham Lincoln and Susannah Foster Ellis. A homemaker, she was the
oldest member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church at the time of her death.
A son, Edwin Williams, died in 1998. Her husband, Roy
Everette Williams, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Ellis Harding, Winston-Salem, and
Nathan Eugene Williams, Rock Hill, S.C.; daughters Dorothy, Inez and Nellie Williams, all
of the home, and Frances Girlene Cauble, Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and several
great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Smith Grove United Methodist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert McLawhorn, the Rev. Ray OFarrell and the Rev.
Oscar Caudle. Burial, church cemetery.
