Digital discord

SALISBURY POST

It’s a good thing we’ve got a whole year to get used to the idea of 10-digit telephone dialing. While the official reason may be that the long “practice-dialing” period will help reduce frustrations and problems when the new area code takes effect, truth is, it’ll give us a whole year to vent our crotchety complaints about having to dial three whole extra numbers just to make local calls. Geez, for that kind of digital heavy lifting, you should get connected to another state, or at least another city. Let’s face it: Most of us are comfortable with the seven-digit dialing system, just as decades ago we were happy with the four-digit system, and before that, people liked turning a crank and having a real, live operator connect calls. But there’s no stopping change — or population growth — in the fiber-optic age. We just have to deal — and dial — with it.
