Robert H. Abernethy

BADIN — Robert Hendley Abernethy, 88, 31 Boyden St., died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 28, 1911, at Hendley Plantation, Anson County, Mr. Abernethy was a son of the late Robert S. and Amelia H. Abernethy. He attended Berry College in Georgia.

He had retired after 43 years as a load dispatcher in the electrical department at Alcoa. He had also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

A member of Bethel United Methodist Church, New London, he was a former Sunday school teacher. A charter member of Boy Scout Troop 42 , he received the Silver Beaver award in 1997.

His wife, Cora Pauline Bunch Abernethy, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Carolyn A. Lindow, Annapolis, Md., and Alice L. Cavaliero-Matthews, Badin; brother Charles C. Abernethy, New London; sister Aileen Morris, Badin; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Bethel United Methodist Church, New London, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Flack. Burial, church cemetery.

Joe N. ‘Burr’ Boger

MOCKSVILLE — Joe N. “Burr”Boger, 53, Farmington Road, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Aug. 9, 1945, in Forsyth County, Mr. Boger was a son of Mary Lapish, Mocksville, and the late David Carl Boger. He was employed by Vulcan Materials.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Helen Jones Boger; daughter Jo Ann Boger, Mocksville; brothers Hubert S. and Thomas David Boger, both of Mocksville; sisters Mrs. Kenneth (Virginia) Lanier and Mrs. William F. (Mary Ruth)Seat, both of Mocksville; and one grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Friday, Farmington Community Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Norman Frye.

Margaret Miller Bostian

CHINA GROVE — Margaret Miller Bostian, 97, formerly of China Grove, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Ocean View Nursing Center, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

Born April 8, 1903, in Rowan County, Mrs. Bostian was a daughter of the late Clara Walker and Colin Miller. She taught school in Rowan County for a number of years and was co-owner/operator of Bostian Mercantile Co. in China Grove.

A member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, she was former coordinator for the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary volunteer services at the Hefner VAMedical Center.

Her husband, George Moses Bostian, died July 8, 1967, and son Robert E. Bostian died Feb. 25, 1994.

Survivors include son George M. Bostian, Charlotte; daughter Betty B. Julian, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; sister Mae Peninger, Concord; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Northcrest Chapel of Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. David Swygert. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Ollie Thompson Cannon

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Ollie Thompson Cannon, 81, 600 E. 23rd St., who died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center.

Born March 24, 1919, in Stanly County, Mrs. Cannon was a daughter of the late Rev. Pearlie Richards and Ora Whitley Thompson. A member of First Wesleyan Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills’ Swink Plant.

Survivors include husband C.W. Cannon; son Jim Blevins, Kannapolis; five stepchildren; sisters Vera Saunders, Landis, Bertie Efird, Albemarle, and Nadie Harrington and Retha Griffin, both of Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Forbis Kivett. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Elizabeth Linker Carrigan

MOORESVILLE — Elizabeth Linker Carrigan, 99, Oakridge Farm Highway, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at her home.

John Everette Williams

The funeral will be Friday for John Everette Williams, 83, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after three months of serious illness.

Born April 28, 1916, in Iredell County, Mr. Williams was a son of the late George and Sally Bowman Williams. He was educated in the Iredell County schools.

He had retired as a farmer and owner of a service station. He was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church.

His wife, Inez Brown Williams, died June 10, 1999.

Survivors include son John Curtis Williams, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; sister Ethel Williams Taylor, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, Trading Ford Baptist Church. Burial, Oakdale Baptist Church cemetery, Spencer.

Martin Luther Faggart

ROCKWELL — Martin Luther Faggart, 82, 3120 Phaniels Church Road, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 6, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Faggart was a son of the late Albert Luther and Edna Witherspoon Faggart. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he was employed by Linn-Corriher Mills for more than 40 years.

He was a member of Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, where he taught the Men’s Bible Class for more than 50 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include wife Lorene Huffman Faggart; son Tommy M. Faggart, Harrisburg; daughters Carolyn F. Reckley, Gainesville, Fla., and Shelby F. Snipes, Rockwell; brothers J.B. Faggart, Rockwell, Paul Faggart, Rimertown, and Marvin Faggart, China Grove; sister Katherine Haney, Concord; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Duncan and the Rev. Charles Guy. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on Phaniels Church Road.

Emily Dickerson Gordon

KANNAPOLIS — Emily Dickerson Gordon, 87, formerly of 706 Pearl Ave., died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 3, 1913, in Madison, Ga., Mrs. Gordon was a daughter of the late Thomas and Laura Rhodes Dickerson. She had retired in 1977 after 36 years at CannonMills, Plant 1, where she worked in the lab and sheet departments. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Her husband, Monroe A. Gordon, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Mrs. Grant (Peggy)Kimball, Kannapolis, and Mrs. Larry (Libby June) Walters, China Grove; brother Libby Dickerson, Comer, Ga.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Norman Brisson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Bessie Taylor Howell

MOORESVILLE — Bessie Taylor Howell, 90, Manor Circle, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1909, in Grayson County, Va., Mrs. Howell was a daughter of the late Fairfax and Phoebe VanHoy Taylor. She had retired from Uniglas, Statesville, where she worked in the spinning department.

She was a charter member and past matron of Ada Chapter 258, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley W. Howell; a son, David Cyrus Howell; and a daughter, Marolyn Proctor.

Survivors include daughters Rena H. Bishop, Mooresville, and Mrs. Paul (Elaine H.)Rummage, Anderson, S.C.; son Marvin T. Howell, Harrisburg; sisters Eva Little, Spencer, W.Va., and Ruth Kirby, Lothian, Md.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Annie Bell Hilton Hughes

THOMASVILLE — Annie Bell Hilton Hughes, 66, 243 Tom Hedrick Road, mother of Willie Hughes, Salisbury, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Community General Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m.Saturday, New Beginners Missionary Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Hughes Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Max Kluttz

Max Kluttz, 57, 1004 Safrit Road, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at his home.

Born July 9, 1942, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of the late Lanora Bostian and William B. Kluttz. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include brothers Johnny and Bobby Kluttz, both of Salisbury, and sisters Katheryn McDonald, Ethel Roseman, Ruby Kluttz and Susie Page, all of Salisbury.

Floyd McKinley Leach, 82, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Raeford Lee Stegall

MOUNT PLEASANT — Raeford Lee Stegall, 63, 490 Moose Road, died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 6, 1936, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Stegall was a son of the late Connie Lee and Lessie Stowe Stegall. He had retired after 47 years at Cannon Mills, Plant 4, machine shop, where he was a supervisor. He was a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge 626.

Survivors include wife Carolyn Boger Stegall; son Steven Stegall, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Fred (Janet)Merry, Concord, and Mrs. Randy (Belinda)Thompson, Albemarle; brothers Ken Stegall, Salisbury, and Johnny Stegall, Concord; sister Linda Morgan, Kannapolis; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Gordon Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frederick Merry. Burial,Cabarrus Memorial Gardens, Concord.

Martha Grimes Thompson

The funeral will be Saturday for Martha Telfair Grimes Thompson, 89, who died Friday (April 21, 2000) at Trinity Oaks at the Lutheran Home.

Born April 30, 1910, in Salisbury, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Nancy Cordon and John Percy Grimes, founder of Grimes Mill.

She was educated in the Salisbury schools and at Hollins College and graduated from Miss Mason’s School at the Castle at Tarrytown-on-the-Hudson. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Junior League of New York.

Her husband, Loy Durant Thompson Jr., died in August 1967.

Survivors include sons Loy Durant Thompson III, Charlotte, and Lawrence Grimes Thompson, Midlothian, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, graveside, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. John C. Sothern and the Rev. Mayo Little.

Visitation: None.

Wilma Janet Martin Turner, 55, 6235 Highway 601 N., died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at her home.

Hazel Morton Wilhelm

ALBEMARLE — Hazel Morton Wilhelm, 76, 729 Pee Dee Ave., died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 15, 1924, in Stanly County, Mrs. Wilhelm was a daughter of the late Ernest H. and Yates Coggin Morton. A member of Christ Episcopal Church, Albemarle, she had retired from the Albemarle City Schools finance office.

Survivors include husband James C. “Poss” Wilhelm; sons James C., Charles David and Douglas M. Wilhelm, all of Albemarle; daughter Kristi W. Jones, Garner; brother Ernest H. Morton Jr., Albemarle; sisters Gladwyn White, Debary, Fla., Ruth Yankovich, Towson, Md., Kathleen Jenkins, Matthews, and Ernestine Talbert, Roxboro; and five grandchildren.

MOCKSVILLE — Lovie Ellis Williams, 100, U.S. Highway 158 East, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.

Her husband, Roy Everette Williams, preceded her in death.
