Richard Brown, 71, River Drive, Linwood, died Monday (April 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born June 19, 1928, in Iredell county, he was a
son of the late M.R. and Beatrice Kennedy Brown. Retired from Custom Crafts in Charlotte,
he was a U. S. Navy veteran of world War II and a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
A stepson, Terry Michael, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife Lucille Brown; stepson
Jerry Michael, Beaufort, S.C.; brothers Jack and Floyd Brown, both of Chula Vista, Calif;
sister Peggy clark, San Diego, Calif; and seven step-grandchildren.

Augusta Gus Austin
Augusta Mae Reid Gus Austin, 93, 422
Lincolnton Road, died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center after 10 days
of serious illness.
Born Dec. 1, 1906, in Rowan County, Mrs. Austin
was a daughter of the late William L. and Mamie Sherrill Reid. She was educated in the
Rowan County schools and at Livingstone College.
Retired, she had worked as a social worker in New
York city. She was a member of Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church, Landis, where she was a mother
of the church. She was a member of Stewardess Board 1, Life Member Council, Lay Council,
Home Mission Society and Parent Body Missionaries. An active volunteer at Livingstone
College, she received numerous awards and certifications for her volunteerism.

Salisbury.

Carey Hoyt Bostian
CHAPEL HILL Carey Hoyt Bostian, 93, Carol
Woods Retirement Community, a Rowan County native, died Saturday (April 22, 2000).
Chancellor of North Carolina State University from
1953-1959, Mr. Bostian was an administrator, scientist and teacher. During his 43 years at
State, he won many awards, including the Watauga Medal for outstanding service in 1975.
Reared in China Grove and Salisbury, in 1928, Mr.
Bostian received a bachelor of science degree from Catawba College, Salisbury. He received
a masters degree in 1930 and a doctorate degree in 1933 from Pittsburgh University.
In 1930, he joined the NCSU zoology department,
where he taught courses before emphasizing his genetics training. During his
administrative experience in the College of Agriculture, he was associate dean and
director of instruction prior to being selected as chancellor. He was also a naturalist
and a master gardener.
Survivors include sons Lloyd R. Bostian, Madison,
Wis., and K. Eugene Bostian, Janesville, Wis.; sisters Geneva Kirk, Salisbury, and Sadie
Husbands, Clearwater, Fla.; brother Ralph Bostian, Granite Quarry; 14 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Raleigh Presbyterian Church; and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Carol Woods Retirement
Community.

Charles V. Jordan
LEXINGTON Charles Vernon Jordan, 71,
Cardinal drive, died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after eight
months of declining health.
Born July 23, 1928, in Davidson County, he was a
son of the late Charlie Walter and Zannie Mae Nichols Jordan. A retired truck driver for
Republic Foil, he attended Coggins Memorial Baptist Church and was a member of Sheets
Memorial Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a member of VFW Post 3074,
American Legion Post 8, Amvets, and the Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include wife Mildred Foster Jordan; sons
Jackie Kerley, Lexington, and Buddy Kerley, Welcome; daughter Sonja Stiers, Lexington;
sisters Maxine Carter, Clatie Berrier and Norma Greene, all of Lexington, and Betty Jean
Parker, Thomasville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Robert Lee Davis
ALBEMARLE Robert Lee Davis, 89, 1137 Gibson
St., died Monday (April 24, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born March 2, 1911, in Stanly County, Mr. Davis
was a son of the late Hattie Davis Hudson and Jake Davis. A graduate of Stanly Technical
College, he had retired after 50 years as owner/operator of Woodside Grocery and Market.
He was a member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist
Church, where he was a former deacon, trustee and treasurer.
A former Albemarle Housing Authority commissioner,
he served on the Citizen Advisory Committee and was a member of the Fishermens Club.
He was a former Boy Scout leader and a veteran of World War II.
A daughter, Lessie Phennie Davis,
preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife Pauline Smith Davis; son
Robert L. Davis Jr., New Haven, Conn.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.

James Clifton Deberry, 64, 1939 Rosemont St., died
Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness
Born Nov. 27, 1935, in Richmond County, he was a
son of Elizabeth Crump Haywood of Mount Gilead and the late Clifton Wade Deberry. A
graduate of Appalachian State College, he was a professor of business and economics at
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for over 30 years. He was a member of Milford Hills
United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include
daughter Julia C. Drummond; sister Wanda E. Yarborough, Sanford; and two grandchildren.

HARMONY Sheila Wilson Sprinkle Keaton, 58,
Sheffield Road, died Tuesday (April 25, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.
Born Nov. 26, 1941, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs.
Keaton was a daughter of the late Felix C. Wilson Jr. and Margaret McLurin Short. She was
a homemaker.
Survivors include husband J.W. Keaton; sons
Richard Leon Sprinkle Jr., Clemmons, and William Curry Sprinkle, Winston-Salem;
stepchildren Johnny Keaton, Rebecca Hill, Maxine Edwards, Jimmy Keaton and Charlie Keaton,

Roy E. Leazer
The funeral is today for Roy E. Leazer, 89,
Salisbury, who died Sunday (April 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 27, 1911, in Salisbury, Mr. Leazer was a
son of the late George Albert and Florence Basinger Leazer. He was educated in the
Salisbury city schools.
A sergeant in the U.S. Army, he served with the
94th Infantry during World War II and was a prisoner of war captured in the European
Theatre. He retired in 1976 from Cannon Mills.
For over 60 years he was a member of First
Presbyterian Church, where he was in the Everymans Bible class. He was a lifelong
member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006
and American Ex-Prisoners of War.
His wife, Pauline Garrett Leazer, died July 15,
1982.
Survivors include son Kenneth R. Leazer, Florence,
S.C.; brother Raymond Leazer, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

conducted by Dr. Robert M. Lewis, pastor, and the Rev. James H. Foil Jr., associate

Banks William Mullis
The funeral will be Thursday for Banks William
Mullis, 82, Salisbury, who died Monday (April 24, 2000) at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home
after a period of declining health.
Born June 25, 1917, in Mecklenburg County, Mr.
Mullis was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Wilson Mullis. He was educated in the
Mecklenburg County schools and Fruitland Bible College. A veteran of World War II, he
served in the U.S. Army.
He retired as minister of Trading Ford Baptist
Church after 25 years. Later he served as interim pastor at Community Baptist and Parkdale
Baptist churches in Salisbury and at Oak Grove Baptist in Albemarle. He was a member of
Rowan Baptist Association and North Carolina Southern Baptist State Convention.
His wife, Margaret Morris Mullis, died April 18,
1990.
Survivors include daughters Mrs. Jim (Gail)Foltz
and Mrs. Glyn (Kay)Murthwaite, both of Salisbury; brother Dowd Mullis, Morganton; sisters
Eunice Roper, Helen Abernathy and Gladys Hough, all of Charlotte, and Margaret Hiatt,
Pinola, Calif.; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and
three step-great-grandchildren.

Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, the Rev. Bob Nash and the Rev. Reece

Jesse Parker
MOORESVILLE Jesse parker, 65, 178
Parkertown Road, died Monday (April 24, 2000) at his home after an extended illness.
Born May 5, 1934, in Iredell County, Mr. Parker
was a son of the late Jacob B. and Mattie Clark Parker. He attended the Iredell County
schools and Mitchell Community College. A self-employed homebuilder for many years, he was
the pastor of, Lincoln Grove Holiness Church, Spencer, for many years. He later was pastor
of Shepherd Church of God, where he had been a lifelong member.
Mr. Parker had worked with the prison camp in
Salisbury as a chaplain for over 30 years and was in the broadcast ministry with WHIP in
Mooresville, WFMX, Statesville, and WPIR, Claremont, for over 30 years.
Survivors include wife Mary Wilson Parker; sons
Jesse Rayvon Parker Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn., and James Nathaniel Parker, Aberdeen;
daughters Marilyn Peep Rebecca Parker and Mrs. Kenneth (Queenie Parker) Brown,
both of Mooresville, and Mrs.. Martin (Kathy Elizabeth Parker) Campbell, Washington, D.C;
brothers Dr. John Parker, Nevada, David and Paul Parker, both of Mooresville, and Rueben

Robert Bob Henry Ware, 73, 201 N. Salisbury Ave., who died Monday (April 24,
2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Sept. 28, 1926, in Dublin, Ga., Mr. Ware was
a son of the late Robert H. and Lizza Mae Cochran Ware. A graduate of Spencer High School,
he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He owned and operated Bob Wares Radiator
Shop, Salisbury, since 1962. A member of Spencer Presbyterian Church, he was an elder. He
was also a member of Spencer Masonic Lodge 543.
His wife, Sara Lineberger Ware, died sept. 29,
1998.

Mrs. Joe (Mary Elinor) Wilburn, Salisbury; brothers Yates and Julian A. Ware, both of
