KANNAPOLIS Brett Myers stood up above the field at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium,
nervously sipping on a drink. The right-handers day had ended in the fifth and while
he was still the pitcher of record here in the eighth inning, the Hickory Crawdads had
narrowed the Piedmont Boll Weevils lead to 6-5.Myers was concerned but he didnt have to be, thanks to the bulging
biceps of Marlon Byrd.
The hulking designated hitter crushed a 425-foot,
3-run homer that soared not just over the left-field fence, not just over the locker rooms
but far into the trees beyond the players parking lot.
It put the capper on a 5-run eighth and sewed up
the victory for Myers, 11-5.
Byrd also helped Piedmont to a two-game split with
the Crawdads. Hickory remains in first place in the Northern Division at 10-4 while the
Weevils upped their record to 9-4.
The game was almost a carbon copy of the night
before, only in reverse. Hickory won Tuesday 5-1, thanks to some timely Weevil miscues.
We made mistakes and it cost us. Today they
made mistakes and it cost them, said Weevils manager Greg Legg. Both of our
teams have good players and one of these days, were going to have a game where both
teams play solid. And it will be a heck of a ballgame.
Especially if Byrd is playing in it. Not only did
he smash his first homer of the season, he added two triples for the second consecutive
night. His line was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
It took awhile but its coming,
Byrd said of his hitting. I saw some good pitches today.
Myers tried to give the Crawdads some good pitches
but ran into a wandering strike zone. The 19-year old, No. 1 draft choice from Florida
walked an uncharacteristic six batters and threw way too many tosses to the plate.
I struggled a little bit with the strike
zone, Myers said. I felt like I threw the ball well but my pitch-count was up
there.
Youre going to have days where
youre not going to have the strike zone and other days when you do. Today
wasnt one of those days.
When Myers walked off the mound after the top of
the fifth, he actually trailed 4-1. But his teammates bailed him out with a four-run spot
in the bottom half.
Brian Hitchcox, the South Atlantic Leagues
leading hitter at .410, doubled and scored on an error. Ambiorix Reyes, the leagues
second-leading hitter, grounded home a run. After Byrd tripled, Carlos Acevedo singled
home two runs for a 5-4 Weevil lead.
Reyes had a sacfirice fly in the sixth for a 6-4
lead, setting up Byrd for the big clout in the eighth, which eased the nerves of the
19-year old Myers.
Ialways try to win for the team, Myers
said. But were solid all the way around. We have an excellent infield,
excellent catchers, a great outfield and were hitting the ball.
Which is what Legg expected with this club, What
Byrd did was no surprise to him.
He had a big day, Legg said. But
even before that, he was doing the little things to help us win, like grounding out and
getting an RBI or taking a walk. The last four days, he has really swung the bat well.
Today, it fell together.
And that long blast in the eighth?
He has the ability to hit balls a long
way, Legg said. Hes fun to watch.
