Elizabeth Wiggins Boykin

Elizabeth Wiggins Tillman Boykin, 90, died Sunday (April 16, 2000)at Spencer Health Care, after a period of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home’s Kelsey Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Nilus Avery II. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Dorothy Sue Burgess

CHINA GROVE — Dorothy Sue Weant Burgess, 63, 2215 Highway 152 East, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, is in charge of arrangements.

 

Mattie Adams Hammonds

KANNAPOLIS — Mattie Adams Hammonds, 86, formerly of 206 Bethpage Road, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord, after four weeks of declining health.

Born July 9, 1913, in Athens, Ga., Mrs. Hammonds was a daughter of the late Mattie Emma McConnell and John Will Adams. Employed with Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, finishing department, Mrs. Hammonds was with the company for 25 years before her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of Shadybrook Baptist Church, Kannapolis, and was a resident of the area since the late 1920s. She had lived at Caremoor Retirement Center, Kannapolis for the past three years.

Mrs. Hammonds was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Hammonds, who died in 1991, and a son, Claude A. Hammonds Jr.

Survivors include son Wade L. Hammonds, Kannapolis; sister Rena Mae Trotter, Hartwell, Ga.; one grandson; and three granddaughters.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Littlejohn. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 2:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Melvin Huntley

KANNAPOLIS — Melvin Huntley, 72, 633 Leisure Park Court, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after several years of declining health.

Born May 28, 1929, in Rutherford County, Mr. Huntley was a son of the late Odessa Leverett and Carl Huntley. He was employed with Cannon Mills Company, Plant One Weave Room, and was a short-order cook for many years. He was a member of First United Pentecostal Church, Concord, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Huntley was a resident of the area since 1972.

Survivors include wife Frances Wix Huntley; sons the Rev. Wayne Huntley, Raleigh, and the Rev. Gerald Huntley, Hickory; sisters Hazel Padgett, Dallas, Lorena Hucks, Concord, and Virginia Cook, Indian Trail; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Noon Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. James Caldwell, the Rev. Wayne Huntley and the Rev. Gerald Huntley. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Leonard Koons McCombs

KANNAPOLIS — Leonard Koons McCombs, 85, Irish Potato Road, died Monday (April 17, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 12, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. McCombs was a son of the late Virginia Trexler and James A. McCombs. He was retired from Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., Bleachery Department.

A member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, where he was very active in many activities including Men’s Fellowship and the Peeler Memorial Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during War World II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. He was a life member of VFW.

Mr. McCombs was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred A. McCombs, who died Nov. 16, 1986, and a daughter, Billie M. Harrison, who died April 4, 1974.

Mr. McCombs is survived by a son Leonard Steve McCombs, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Norred. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Dorothy ‘Dottie’Morrow

MOORESVILLE — Dorothy “Dottie”Rogers Morrow, 73, of Ferncliff Drive, died Monday (April 17, 2000)at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 22, 1927, in Biltmore, Mrs. Morrow was a daughter of the late R.L. and Sadie Cunningham Rogers. She was a retired inspector of Troutman Shirt Company, Main Street Mooresville Plant and was a member of the Mooresville ARP Church, where she taught Sunday school and worked with the pre-school class.

Mrs. Morrow was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. “Buddy” Morrow, and son,Charles E. “Eddie”Morrow.

Survivors include daughter Brenda Gayle (Mrs. Michael) McConnell, Mooresville; brothers Dick and Jimmy Rogers, both of Franklin, and Gerald Rogers, Inyokern, Calif.; sister Billie Carson, Lafollette, Tenn.; and one granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Mooresville ARP Church, conducted by the Rev. Gerald R. Hallman. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Frances Maybelle Moser

Frances Maybelle Moser, 78, 108 Allen Lane, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury, after a year of declining health.

Born Feb. 25, 1922, in Durham, Miss Moser was a daughter of the late Maybelle Council and Max I. Moser. A high school graduate from Duncan, S.C., she was employed with Duke Power Company, Buck Steam Plant for 42 years and retired as an office clerk in 1987. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include brother Robert F. Moser, Lincolnton, and Max I. Moser Jr., Boiling Springs; sisters Hester Sims, Salisbury, Ruth Hazel McHugh, Gaffney, S.C., and Beatrice Joyner, Pleasant Garden.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert F. Sims of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Atlanta, Ga. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

 

Margaret June Powell

Margaret June Cook Powell, 57, 421 Mildred St., died Monday (April 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 8, 1942, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of Margaret Lowder Cook, Kannapolis and the late William D. Cook. She retired from Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. after 18 years of service and moved to Salisbury from Kannapolis in 1987. She was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include, husband William “Bill”D. Powell; daughter Mrs. Darrell (Angel) Yow, Kannapolis; brothers O’Neal, Donnie, Scottie and Ronnie Cook, all of Durham, and Roger Dean Cook of Cary; sisters Glenda Cook and Debbie Sharon, both of Durham; and one grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Mark Anders. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
