SALISBURY, Md. The Piedmont Boll Weevils countered Delmarvas big inning with
one of their own, which made the difference in a 9-8 win Monday night. The Weevils scored six runs in the fifth inning to improve
to 8-3 in the Class ASouth Atlantic League. The outburst offset the five runs the
Shorebirds (5-6) scored in the third inning and was just enough to hang on for the win.
All nine Piedmont starters collected at least one
hit. The Boll Weevils scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings but
trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the fifth.
Alex Rojas, James Sitzman, Marlon Byrd and Nate
Espy all singled to pull within 6-5. Jorge Padilla followed with an RBI double to tie the
game and Eric Schreimann gave the Weevils the lead with a two-run single. Against the
third pitcher of the inning, Brian Hitchcox closed out the frame with another run-scoring
single.
Piedmonts big inning came too late for
starting pitcher Ken Westmoreland, who left after allowing five runs on four hits and two
errors in the third inning. Elia Serrano came on in relief and got the win, his first of
the year.
Delmarva tallied single runs in the sixth and
eighth innings before Mark Outlaw entered the game with two outs in the eighth. He got the
last out of that inning and retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out three of
the four batters he faced for his third save.
Piedmont returns home tonight to open a two-game
series against the Hickory Crawdads. Game time is 6:35.
