SHREVEPORT, La. — Salisbury native and pro golfer Tripp Isenhour has taken over the lead in money winnings on the Buy.com Tour for the second time this season.

Isenhour tied for second in the Shreveport Open on Sunday, winning $35,200. That gives him $137,103 in six events for 2000.

Isenhour regained the lead from MarkHensby, who dropped to second with $111,514.

Kent Jones won the Shreveport title with a 5-under-par 273 on the 6,916-yard, par-2 Southern Trace Country Club course, collecting $72,000

Isenhour had four straight sub-par rounds of 67, 68, 71 and 68 for a 274, coming up one stroke shy of Jones. Keith Clearwater also shot a 274.

PGA: Stewart Cink, four shots behind when the final round began, shot a 6-under par 65 (270 total) to win the MCI Classic by two shots over Tom Lehman (65), who jumped from 12th to second.

Ernie Els (74) had five bogeys after the sixth hole and finished with a 275 total to scuttle a tournament he appeared to have wrapped up.

LPGA: Juli Inkster successfully defended her LPGA Longs Drugs Challenge title, closing with an even-par 72 for a five-stroke victory over Brandie Burton (74). Inkster had a tournament-record, 13-under total of 275 for her 23rd career victory.

SENIORS: Doug Tewell shot a 6-under-par 66 for a 10-under 134 total and a one-shot lead after two rounds of the PGA Seniors’ Championship. Dana Quigley was second after making 10 birdies and a quadruple bogey en route to a 66.

SEVEWINS: Seve Ballesteros, ranked 590th in the world, upset rival captain Colin Montgomerie to lead Europe past Britain-Ireland in the new team event that bears his name.

TYSONFIGHTPOSTPONED: Mike Tyson’s planned May 20 fight against Lou Savarese in Milan, Italy, will be postponed until at least June, said Tyson’s manager, Shelly Finkel. Finkel said the fight might not be held in the Italian city at all, depending on when it is rescheduled.

Italian promoter Salvatore Cherchi said he hadn’t heard any official word about a postponement.

VARGASDEFENDS: Fernando Vargas defended his IBF junior middleweight title Saturday night with a unanimous 12-round decision over Ike Quartey.

SELESWINS: Monica Seles won her second straight title in the Bausch & Lomb Championships with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Conchita Martinez. Seles won the 46th singles championship of her career and improved to 18-1 lifetime against Martinez.

ILIETAKESTITLE: Andrew Ilie won the Galleryfurniture.com Tennis Challenge, beating Australian countryman Jason Stoltenberg 6-3, 7-5.

MOYADEFEATSCLAVET: Carlos Moya defeated Francisco Clavet 6-3, 6-2 to win the Estoril Open, the European tour’s first clay-court event of the year.

Top-seeded Anke Huber of Germany won the women’s title with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory against second-seeded Nathalie Dechy.

DAVISCUP: Chile and Argentina were kicked out of this year’s Davis Cup following crowd trouble that disrupted their match last weekend in Santiago.

JONESINTOPFORM: Marion Jones began her drive toward her goal of winning five Olympic gold medals by taking the women’s 400 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays in 49.59 seconds, making her the fourth fastest American woman ever in the event.

JONESTOAMERICAN: Former Virginia men’s basketball coach Jeff Jones, forced out two years ago after the Cavaliers’ third consecutive sub-par season, will become American University’s coach today, according to published reports.

Jones will be hired to replace the fired Art Perry during afternoon news conference, the Daily Press of Newport News, Va., and The Washington Post reported today.

For his career at Virginia, where he also was a point guard, Jones was 146-104.

HOUSTONINTERESTEDINBUZZ: Among possible replacements for former basketball coach Clyde Drexler, The University of Houston is considering Appalachian State basketball coach Buzz Peterson.

But Peterson, who had led the Mountaineers to a 23-9 record and a trip to the NCAA tournament this year, told Houston television station KRIV he has not been offered the job.

“Yeah there’s interest,” Peterson said Friday, stopping short of saying he’d been offered the job. “My wife and I talked about it and there’s interest in the situation.”

Drexler, a member of the famed Phi Slamma Jamma teams of the early the 1980s, returned to his alma mater after 15 years in the NBA. He had a disappointing two-year stint as basketball coach, leading the Cougars to 10-17 and 9-22 seasons.

Peterson played under Dean Smith at North Carolina and was Michael Jordan’s roommate.

DUKEWOMENWIN: Duke broke the previous 54-hole team total by 19 strokes to win the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s golf championship by 36 strokes.

Maria-Garcia Estrada became the third-straight freshman to capture the ACC individual title as she finished at 1-under-par 215 at the 6,355-yard, par-72 Salem Glen Country Club. It was her first collegiate victory.
