Edd Benjamin Barnett

KANNAPOLIS — Edd Benjamin Barnett, 86, 2004 Pennsylvania Ave. died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center after a long illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1913 in Athens, Ga., Mr. Barnett was a son of the late John Henry Barnett and Jane Scarborough Barnett. He was a member of Royal Oaks Baptist Church since 1947. He retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 in 1973, where he worked in the No. 7 weave room.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alise Gaddy Barnett, daughter Sylvia B. Dill, Fayetteville, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Royal Oaks Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Burton Craige Barringer

Burton Craige Barringer Jr., 77, of 1722 Bellevue Rd., Salisbury, died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born May 25, 1922 in Salisbury, Mr. Barringer was a son of the late Grady Lee Waggoner Barringer and Burton Craige Barringer Sr. He attended Salisbury Schools and graduated from Boyden High School and Catawba College. A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 16 years before retiring in 1984.

Mr. Barringer attended Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee, was deacon for 25 years and a deacon emeritus. He was a teacher and director of Sunday School.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruby Poplin Barringer; son Richard “Rick” Barringer; daughter Amy Louise Barringer, Boston; brothers Clyde Barringer, Salisbury, and William L. “Bill” Barringer, Kentucky; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m.Tuesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mark Anders, pastor of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, and the Rev. James Stokes. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Dr. Raymond D. Biddix

Dr. Raymond D. Biddix, 78, 325 Regency Road, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at Duke University Medical Center after five months of declining health.

Born April 3, 1922 in Washington County, Tenn., Mr. Biddix was a son of the late Mable McBee and John Arthur Biddix.

Educated in Gaston County schools, he attended Brevard College and Emory University in Atlanta. He graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., receiving a doctorate of optometry in 1953.

During World War II he was a Marine fighter pilot.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Carolyn Cunningham Biddix; sons Dr. Jerry Biddix of Winters, Texas, and Larry Biddix, Charlotte; daughter Star Singleton of Casselberry, Fla.; step-daughters Cassandra Cunningham, Chapel Hill, and Carol Bellis, Katie Wasden and Kelly Raymond, all of Richmond, Va.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services: A private service was held Saturday.

Visitation: 3:30-6:30 tonight at the home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mike Junior Bowers

Mike Junior Bowers, 50, of Lee Street, Salisbury, died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

William Stanley Breedlove

ROCKWELL — William Stanley Breedlove, 66, of Gold Hill died Friday (April 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a short period of declining health.

Born Oct. 31, 1933 in Guilford County, Mr. Breedlove was a son of the late Laura Curthis Breedlove and John William Breedlove. He attended Guilford County schools, retired from Tenneco Packaging and attended Trinity Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Julia Ann Welborn Breedlove; daughters Brenda Morgan, Rockwell, Christine Brush, Rockwell, Joy Scruggs, Salisbury, Teresa McFarland, Norwood, Ohio, and Kimberly Morgan, Gold Hill; brothers John Robert Breedlove, Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Art Miller Breedlove, Lexington; sister Hazel Thomas, High Point; and 11 grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Trinity Wesleyan Church, conducted by the Rev. Gene Beaver, the Rev. Ernest Mullins and the Rev. Lee Cockerill. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times, at the home of daughter Christine Brush, Rockwell.

 

Tyson James Carter

MOCKSVILLE — Tyson James Carter, 28, of Allen Road, Mocksville, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Born June 27, 1971 in Silver Springs, Md., she was a daughter of the late Susan Carter Carter. She attended the Yadkinville Church of God, was active in Boy Scouts of America and worked for Freightliner in Cleveland.

Survivors include son Tyler Carter.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Davie Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jones. Burial, Rose Cemetery, Mocksville.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Davie Funeral Service.

 

Frank Du

KANNAPOLIS — Frank Du, 65, of 341 Cooke Street, Kannapolis, died Thursday (April 13, 2000) at Duke University Medical Center after three weeks of illness.

Born Aug. 14, 1934 in Saigon, Vietnam, Mr. Du was a son of the late Tran Minh Lap and Du Ngan Hao.

He was a Lutheran and the manager of China Kitchen since 1986. He worked for an American company during the Vietnam War, moving to America in 1979. He lived in Grand Forks, N.D. until moving here in 1985.

Survivors include brother Tran Cau and sister Tran Le Quyen, both of Australia.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom Tucker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Eloise Goldston Freeze

KANNAPOLIS — Eloise Goldston Freeze, 93, formerly of 100 S. Rose Ave., Kannapolis, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Born June 8, 1906 in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Freeze was a daughter of the late Eli Thomas Goldston and Flora Ellen Hinshaw Goldston.

She was employed with Cannon Mills Plant 1 in the sewing room for 40 years until she retired in 1971. She attended Trinity Oaks United Methodist Church, where she was active with the Wesley Fellowship and assisted in counseling senior citizens. She was a YMCA volunteer at the senior center, a member of Mariam Winslow Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the ladies auxilliary of the American Legion Post 115.

She was preceded in death by husband ColonE. Freeze and sister Nell McCray.

Survivors include sister Christine Goldston Rodowsky of Orlando, Fla. and brother Robert Lamont Goldston of Huntsville, Ala.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Ma Viola Bostian Fuller

CONCORD — Ma Viola Bostian Fuller, 95, formerly of Cabarrus Avenue, Concord, died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born July 20, 1904 in Rowan County, Mrs. Fuller was a daughter of the late Allison LeeRoy and Atha Frances Lomax Bostian. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, she retired from JC Penney.

Survivors include great-niece Debbie Hampton, Winston-Salem, great-nephew Billy Long Jr., Concord, sister Edna Fisher, Concord, and brother Melvin Bostian, Morganton.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Green Lawn Cemetery, China Grove, conducted by Dr. Richard Cheek.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today, Wilkinson Funeral Home. At other times, 738 Union St.

Reuben Albert Haase

Ocklawaha, Fla. — Reuben Albert Haase, 56, of Ocklawaha, Fla., died Friday (April 14, 2000) at Moses Cone Hospital.

Survivors include sister Joanne H. Bullard, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Handes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Paul Zeymer. Burial, Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

James Roy Harrington

CONCORD — James Roy Harrington, 88, of Brian Center, Concord died Saturday (April 15, 2000) after 10 years of declining health.

Born July 25, 1911 in Stanly County, Mr. Harrington was a son of the late Thomas J. and Cynthia E. Hatley Harrington. He retired from the U.S.Army after 22 years and worked with the V.A. Medical Center for 24 years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary Harrington; son Steve Harrington of Boiling Springs; sisters Rosa H. McPhatter of Concord and Belzora H. Sasser of Indian Trail; brother Richard “Dick” Harrington of Concord; and one granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wilkinson Funeral Home.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Wilkinson Funeral Home.

 

Lynnette Hodge Hughes

CHINA GROVE — Lynnette Hodge Hughes, 36, of 720 Red Lead Lane, China Grove, died Saturday, April 15 (2000) at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following injuries received in an automobile accident.

Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Joyce Hunsucker

LANDIS — Joyce Dell Hooper Hunsucker, 50, of 909 S. Kimmons St., Landis, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born April 19, 1949 in Salisbury, Mrs. Hunsucker was a daughter of the late Mattie Leen Kopp Hooper and Charles Willard Hooper. She attended Rowan County schools, was a homemaker and member of Landis Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry D. Hunsucker; sons Robert “Bo” Hunsucker, China Grove, Johnny Ray “Pee Wee” Hunsucker of the home and Jerry Wayne Williamson, Landis; daughters Sheila Williamson Paleologos, Mooresville, and Lisa Whitley Shaver, China Grove; stepfather Donald P. Kopp, China Grove; and two granddaughters.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Colonial Chapel, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Rabon. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Dan Johnson

MOORESVILLE — Dan Johnson, 55, Beechwood Road, Salisbury, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at his residence.

Born Jan. 30, 1945 in Burnsville, N.C., Mr. Johnson was the son of the late Dice Johnson. A USArmy veteran, he was a self-employed truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his mother, stepfather Charlie Metcalf and brother Leonard Johnson.

Survivors include son John C. Johnson, Salisbury; daughters Crystal Osment, China Grove and Dannie Gullett, Wilson; half-brothers R.C., Eugene, Sam and Donelle; half-sister Susie; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

 

Irene Funderburk Lyerly

Irene Funderburk Lyerly, 87, of Salisbury died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at the Brian Center after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 20, 1912 in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Lyerly was a daughter of the late Daisy Caroline Troutman Funderburk and Raymond Ransom Funderburk.

Educated in the old Fisher School, she was a homemaker and had worked at Cannon Mills in China Grove. She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the home demonstration club.

Her husband, Charles Lyerly, died July 31, 1997.

Survivors include sons Glenn Lyerly, Rockwell ,and Charles Lyerly, Gold Hill; daughter Betty Monroe, Salisbury; brothers Charles “Gene” Funderburk and Bill Funderburk, both of Rockwell; sisters Carrie Bost and Bernice Williams, both of Charlotte, Sadie Wagoner, Kannapolis, and Ruby Fox, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Pauls Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Marcus Hovis. Burial, church cemetery.

Lillian K. Murr

CHINA GROVE — Lillian K. Murr, 73, of 4409 Coolwood Circle, Concord, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center after one month of declining health.

Born May 27, 1926 in Stanly County, Mrs. Murr was a daughter of the late Nona ThomasKennerly and Walter Adam Kennerly. She attended Landis schools, worked in the sewing department at Terry Products and Carolina Maid, and attended God’s Church of Faith.

Survivors include husband Henry E. Murr; sons Donnie Murr of Seymour, Tenn., and Danny Murr of Sevierville, Tenn.; brother Johnson Kennerly, Kannapolis; sister Clara Alexander, China Grove; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 tonight, Northcrest Chapel of Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Upright and the Rev. Tim Brown. Burial, 11 a.m. Monday at West Lawn Memorial Park.

Hazel Wright

KANNAPOLIS — Hazel Wright, 76, 2521 Sectionhouse Road, Hickory, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at his home after a long illness.

Born Aug. 23, 1923 in Anson County, he was a son of the lateTheo and Ora Austin Wright. He was employed with Pet Dairies of Hickory for 41 years until retiring in 1988. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Hickory.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Canup Wright, brothers Bill Wright and T.C. Wright, both of Polkton, and Bob Wright, Waycross, Ga.; sisters Virginia McManus and Linda Harrington, both of Polkton, and Ann Moses, Nashville, Tenn.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Lambert. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.
