Pfeiffer golfers earn record-setting CVAC title; Indians win in Hickory

SALISBURY POST

F
ORT MILL, S.C. — Pfeiffer’s men’s golf team set a one-day record low score twice while winning the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference championship here Monday and Tuesday.

Coach Dave Davis’ Falcons followed Monday’s record-setting 288 with a 286 on Tuesday. That gave the Falcons a CVAC record 54-hole total of 872 and a record for margin of victory, 46 strokes.

Pfeiffer claimed the top four individual spots, and all five falcons finished in the top 10.

Senior Stuart Tatters proved he is all the way back from January elbow surgery, taking medalist honors with a 73-71-70—214 total, 2 over par. His 214 shattered the previous tournament record by eight strokes. Tatters birdied four of five holes, starting with the par-5 No. 3 hole after making a double bogey on the first hole.

Sophomore Ben Casey, who has finished first or second five times this year, also broke the old tournament record with a 76-71-71—218 total to finish second behind Tatters.

Freshmen Luke Poulter (222) and Andrew McArthur (223) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Poulter’s 70 on Tuesday tying for the tourney’s low round. Two-time defending CVAC champ Peter Astrom was ninth at 228.

“It was an incredible tournament for our team,” said Davis. “Regent Park is a very difficult golf course that requires patience and the ability to hit all the shots. People do not understand that it is very rare that anyone breaks 300 on this golf course, and these guys did it all three days, and in convincing fashion. This is the type of golf we will need to play to win the national championship.”

Tatters earned CVAC Player of the Year honors, and Poulter received the Freshman of the Year award. Davis was named Coach of the Year. The Falcons, ranked No. 1 in District 3 North and No. 11 nationally, will compete in the NCAA Regional at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla., May 1-3.

HICKORY — Catawba’s men’s golf team earned a four-stroke win Tuesday in the Carter Invitational.

Salisbury’s Christopher McCoy finished at 155 with a 73 on the second day. Derrek Camps had a 79 on Tuesday for a 160. Ryan Anthony had a second-day 79 for a 164.

  • Livingstone’s Smith third in heptathalon

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Livingstone College’s Keyja Smith made a strong showing in the Liberty Invitational track and field meet last weekend, finishing in third place in the heptathlon.

Smith compiled 4,350 points in the seven events. She had times of 14.89 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 25.71 in the 200 dash, and 2:48.58 in the 800. She high jumped 4-101
