Sandy Alexander Cowan CLEVELAND
Born May 5, 1899, in Rowan County, he was a son of
the late Julia Wood Cowan Pearson and the late Tom Cowan. Educated in the Rowan County
schools, Mr. Cowan had retired from Southern Railway after 29 years with the company.
He was a member of Allen Temple Presbyterian
Church, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, trustee, deacon, ruling elder
and custodian. He was ordained an elder in 1993. He was also a former Oddfellow.
His wife, Lillie Annie Avery Cowan, died April 9,
1991.
Survivors include daughters Miriam Cowan-Hardge,
Atlanta, and Patricia Stinson Turner, East Point, Ga.; five grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Allen Temple
Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. William Lawrence, pastor, and the Rev. George
Cavin Goodman. Burial, church cemetery.

ROCKWELL Opie Cecil Bowden, 57, Rockwell,
died Tuesday (April 12, 2000) at his residence, from an apparent heart attack.

Barbara Jean Wylie Cobb
GREENSBORO Barbara Jean Wylie Cobb, 53,
3406 Woodlea Drive, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000)at Moses Cone Hospital. She was a native
of Rowan County.
Born Oct. 3, 1946, Mrs. Cobb was the daughter of
the late Rosezene Cherry and John Thomas Wylie. A graduate of Dunbar High School, she
received a bachelors degree from Livingstone College and a master of social work
degree in 1979 from Indiana University.
Mrs. Cobb was last employed at Vision Youth Group
Home as director of social work and certified mental health. She was a member of White
Rock AME Zion Church, Granite Quarry.
Survivors include husband Joseph Cobb; daughters
Sonya Renee Wylie, Greensboro; stepdaughter Rhonda McCollum, Greensboro; brothers Henry
Wylie, Rock Hill, S.C., John T. Wylie, Jacksonville, Fla., and Kenneth R. Wylie,
Salisbury; and sisters Ruth W. Morrow, Granite Quarry, Julia W. Tate, Linda F. Wylie and
Diane W. Ellis, all of Salisbury, Dorothy W. Moore, Owings Mills, Md., and Sandra W.

Charles Hardin
CHINA GROVE Charles Perry Hardin, 62, 1920
Highway 153, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief
illness.
Born Jan. 29, 1938, in China Grove, he was a son
of the late John Newberry and Mary Ella Redick Hardin. Retired after 20 years in the U.S.
Navy, he served in both Korea and Vietnam.
Survivors include wife Sueko Kawasaki Hardin;
daughter Yoko Ross, Salisbury; sons Roy Michael Hardin, China Grove, and Steven Hardin,
Salisbury; sisters Mary Kathleen Christie, Mooresville, Linda Martin, Gold Hill, and
Barbara Ann Gibson and Margaret Powell, both of Kannapolis; brothers Paul Hardin, Vienna,
W.Va., and Vernon Ray Hardin, China Grove; and four grandchildren.

Myrtle Wood Harrison
Myrtle Louise Wood Harrison, 83, 1829 Statesville
Blvd., died Wednesday (April 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of
illness.
Born Feb. 11, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Harrison
was a daughter of the late Zellie Myers and Daniel Webster Wood. A graduate of the
Woodleaf schools, she was a partner with Piedmont Security Patrol. She was a member of
Milford Hills United Methodist Church and Circle 3.
Her husband, Maurice Elvin Harrison, died in
January 1981.
Survivors include son Daniel Harrison, Salisbury;
brothers Quillman, Marshall and Donald Wood, all of Salisbury; and sister Hazel W.
Pinkston Werner, Salisbury.

Catherine Jackson Leonard, 76, 609 S. Shaver St.,
died Wednesday (April 5, 2000)at Tucker Nursing Facilities, Tucker, Ga., after several
weeks of illness.
Born Feb. 28, 1924, in Washington, D.C., she was a
daughter of the late Agnes Oates and George Jackson. Educated in the Washington, D.C.,
schools she was a retired homemaker and a former member of First Calvary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Ollie Leonard, who died in 1991.
Survivors include sons Ollie Leonard Jr., Albany,
N.Y., Anthony Leonard, Salisbury; George, David and William Ransford, all of Washington,
D.C., and Michael Leonard, New York City; daughters Patricia, Catherine and Geneva

Zeb Frank Young
Zeb Frank Young, 78, Salisbury, died Tuesday
(April 11, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a
period of declining health.
Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Davidson County, Mr. Young
was a son of the late Minnie Belle Bernhardt and John Andrew Stokes Young. He was educated
in the Churchland schools.
He had retired from N.C. Finishing Co. after 42
years with the company. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Organ
Lutheran Church and the East Rowan Saddle Club.
Survivors include wife Vela Mae Miller Young, whom
he married July 12, 1942; son Zeb Perry Young, Salisbury; daughter Gail McBride, Fort
Myers, Fla.; sisters Pauline Lakey and Unie Young, both of Salisbury, and Inez Trexler,
Mimms, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Powles Funeral Home
Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless, pastor of Organ Lutheran Church.
