Sandy Alexander Cowan

CLEVELAND — Sandy Alexander Cowan, 100, 204 Krider St., died Monday (April 10, 2000)at A.G. Rhodes Home-Cobb, Marietta, Ga., after four weeks of serious illness.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Betty Brown Cline

CHINA GROVE — Betty Brown Cline, 71, China Grove, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at Transitional Health Care, Kannapolis.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Rev. George Denham

SPENCER — The Rev. George Denham, 75, Spencer, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at his residence.

Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Vivian Hollar Gainer

Vivian Hollar Gainer, 78, 250 Briarwood Lake Drive, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a week of illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1921, in Statesville, Mrs. Gainer was a daughter of the late Myrtle Leona Waugh and Romulus Frederick Hollar. Educated in the Statesville schools, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Relief Society.

Survivors include husband Joseph Jason Gainer Jr., whom she married Nov. 3, 1939; sons Joseph Walter Gainer, Statesville, and Robert William Gainer, Salisbury; daughter Judith Ann Overcash, Roswell, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, conducted by Bishop Michael Craddock. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Robert Gainer, 475 Quail Drive.

Samuel A. Jackson Jr.

SPENCER — Samuel Alexander Jackson Jr., 46, Spencer, died Saturday (April 8, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after six months of serious illness.

Born Jan. 8, 1954, in Rowan County, Mr. Jackson was a son of the late Peggy Beaver and Samuel Alexander. A graduate of East Rowan High School, he was a delivery man for the Charlotte Observer and publisher of the Focus newsletter. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Men in Mission.

He is survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Dr. Ernest Misenheimer

Dr. Ernest Luther Misenheimer, 85, Salisbury, died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at Trinity Oaks, Salisbury.

Born March 10, 1915, in Stanly County, Mr. Misenheimer was a son of the late Ora Whitley and Ernest L. Misenheimer. He was a graduate of the Stanly County schools, Lenoir-Rhyne College and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Retired as bishop of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Mr. Misenheimer was a member of Haven Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Men in Mission. He served as chairman of the church’s Evangelism Committee. He was also a member of the Lutheran Services for the Aging board of directors.

He was preceded in death by a son, Luther Misenheimer.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret Lentz Misenheimer, whom he married July 11, 1941; sons David Misenheimer, Charlotte, the Rev. John Misenheimer, Wilmington, and the Rev. Stephen Misenheimer, Knoxville, Tenn.; sister Lillian Misenheimer, Albemarle; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:Committal service, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Memorial service, 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Leonard Bolick, bishop, and the Rev. Ronald Fink, pastor, Haven Lutheran Church. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Haven Lutheran Church.

Betty Delores Key Moore

Betty Delores Key Moore, 64, 231 D Ave., Apartment 8, died Monday (April 10, 2000) after several months of illness.

Born Oct. 25, 1935, in Keysville, Ga., Mrs. Moore was a daughter of the late Annie Key. Educated in the public schools of Georgia, she had retired as a private-duty personal-care aide. She was a former member of Salem Baptist Church, Glen Cove, N.Y.

Survivors include son Darren Moore, Roosevelt, N.Y.; daughters Saundra M.Ashford, Orange, N.J., and Beverly Byrd, Salisbury; brother Charles Key, Mocksville; sister Maggie Hobbs, Augusta, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Charles E. Morris

Charles E. Morris, 88, Salisbury, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Chester zum Brunnen

Chester David zum Brunnen, 76, Sells Road, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at his residence after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Salisbury, Mr. zum Brunnen was a son of the late Veda Mae Beaver and Thomas Park zum Brunnen. A graduate of Boyden High School, he also attended Catawba College and the Citadel.

A World War II veteran, he served in Europe. After the war, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went into partnership with his father at Thomas P. zum Brunnen CPA until 1975. He continued his practice as president of Chester D. zum Brunnen CPA until his retirement in 1995.

A former president of the Rowan County Jaycees, he was instrumental in the founding of the Salisbury/Rowan Historical Foundation, serving as both treasurer and trustee. He was recognized with an award for his guidance in the beginning years of the Salisbury/Rowan Symphony and Piedmont Players Theatre.

A member of the Salisbury Rotary Club, where he was treasurer for many years, he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Salisbury Elks Club, Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006 and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342. At one time he served as treasurer/financial adviser for the Country Club of Salisbury.

Active with the United Way, he served as treasurer for the Democrats of Rowan County. He was a member of the N.C. Association of CPA’s, where he served on several committees.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was a vestry member and a lay reader. He was designated treasurer emeritus for his dedicated years of service to as treasurer.

Survivors include wife Betty Jean Wagoner zum Brunnen; son Chester David zum Brunnen, Chatham County; daughter Jeanne zum Brunnen Stone, New Hill; a brother, the Rev. Richard I. zum Brunnen, Churchville, Md.; and sisters Irene Purcell, Salisbury, and Mary Helen Bach, New Bern.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John C. Southern Jr. and the Rev. Richard I. zum Brunnen. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home.
