Scooter Sherrill was named this weekend as the Associated Press Player of the Year in
North Carolina.Was there ever any doubt?
Its the All-Americans second such
honor. Gatorade named him player of the year last week.
Sherrill, who averaged 25 points for Mike
Gurleys 28-2 West Rowan Falcons, is headed for N.C. State next season. He has
already played in the McDonalds All-American game in Boston and the Hoop Summit in
Indianapolis. He is scheduled to play tonight in the Magic Johnson Roundball Classic at
the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh. It will be the first chance for local
Wolfpack fans to see their teams most heralded recruit.
ESPN will air the game at 8 p.m.
Joining Scooter on the first team is Brandon
Clifford of Greensboro Page, who was second in the voting. His team was eliminated from
the state playoffs by Davie County.
J.K. Edwards is a familiar face to South Rowan
fans. The 6-7 forward from West Forsyth bulled his way through the Central Piedmont
Conference for the past two seasons.
Dwon Clifton of High Point Westchester, a private
school near High Point, was named. He is going to Clemson. Taron Downey, who averaged 30
points at Oxford Webb, rounds out the team.
The second team includes three familiar faces:
Duane Phillips of Davie County, Alex Martin of High Point Central and Concords
Marcus Cooke. Brad Hagaman of Wilkes Central and Bradley Blue of 1A Midway round out the
second team
