Ann Webb Champ

ADVANCE — Ann Webb Champ, 66, N.C. Highway 801 S., died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born Aug. 11, 1933, in Davie County, Mrs. Champ was a daughter of the late Thomas Lee and Ruby Riddle Webb. Retired from Lexington Furniture, she was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church and Senior Citizens of Cooleemee.

Mrs. Champ was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia K. Champ and Cynthia Ann Champ.

Survivors include husband John Henry Champ, of the home; sons John H. Champ Jr., Mocksville, and James C. Champ, Advance; daughters Peggy Jean Grimes and Crystal Lynn Champ, both of Advance; brother James Walter Webb, Mocksville; sisters Ruby K. Vogel and Kitty Josephine Cope, both of Marstown, Tenn., and Mary Frances Walters, Raleigh.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Turrentine Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe Smith and the Rev. Billy Sloop. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Eaton Funeral Home.

 

Irvington “Pop” Lee Davis

MOORESVILLE — Irvington “Pop” Lee Davis, 84, of Timberview Lane, died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at his residence.

Born Oct. 4, 1915, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Albert Edward and Katherine Helms Davis. He was retired from Reeves Brothers in Cornelius and attended Liberty Baptist Church. He was also a charter member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27, Concord, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Hettie Guy Davis and a daughter, Barbara June Davis Osborne.

Survivors include son Albert E. Davis, Cleveland; daughters Virginia “Jenny” Allen, Mooresville, and Wanda Kay Burchett, Sparta; sister Verle Arrowood, Belmont; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Tuesday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Robinette. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Dr. Ernest L. Misenheimer

Dr. Ernest L. Misenheimer, 85, of Salisbury, a retired Bishop of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, died Sunday (April 9, 2000)at Trinity Oaks.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Clarence Monroe Owens

Clarence Monroe Owens, 82, of Greensboro, died Saturday (April 8, 2000).

Born Dec. 14, 1917, in Lexington, Mr. Owens was a graduate of Boyden High School, Class of 1937, and was a 50 year member of Gate City Masonic Lodge in Greensboro.

Survivors include daughter Sherry L. Owens, Greensboro; sister Ruth O. Surratt, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro.

Arrangements by Cremation Services of North Carolina. Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Col. Eliot ‘E.V.’ Parker Jr.

MOCKSVILLE —Col. Eliot Vail “E.V.” Parker Jr., 62, of West Church Street, died Saturday (April 8, 2000)at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born June 8, 1937, in Morristown, N.J., Mr. Parker was a son of the late Eliot Vail and Lillian Butler Parker. He retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg in 1985 and spent ten years serving as Jr. ROTC instructor at Davie County High School.

Survivors include wife Adelheid Parker, of the home; daughters Dawn Howell, Fort Worth, Texas, and Helene Bryant, Oklahoma City; brothers Eliot V. Parker III, Houston, Texas, and Charles Parker, Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren.

Services:Memorial service, 4 p.m. Wednesday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Turner and the Rev. David Gilbreath. The body will be cremated.

Eaton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

Patricia Lee Phelps

Patricia Lee Phelps, 53, of Salisbury, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at her residence.

Born Feb. 1, 1947, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Phelps was a daughter of June Hire Stanford, Winston-Salem, and the late Wiley G. Stanford. She attended Forsyth County public schools.

Mrs. Phelps was preceded in death by her husband J.S. Buddy Phelps Jr., who died Aug. 9, 1999.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include step-son Bruce Phelps, Morganton; brother Wiley F. Stanford, Advance; and sister Sandra June Stanford, Asheville.

A private service for the family will be held at a later date.

Memorials: Humane Society of Rowan County, Inc., 112 W. Innes St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Mildred Washington

EAST SPENCER —Mildred Washington, 71, 314 East Broad St., died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several days of serious illness.

Born July 23, 1928, in Salisbury, Ms. Washington was a daughter of the late Henry and Estella White Washington. She attended Dunbar High School in East Spencer and was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, East Spencer, and a member of the usher board and other organizations.

Survivors include sons David L. Washington, Pikesville, Tenn., and Billy Ray Washington, Winston-Salem; daughter Carol W. Lewis, Rock Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Chester zum Brunner

Chester zum Brunnen, well known accountant and long time civic leader, died at his home early this morning, after an extended illness. He was 76 years old.

Known for his unique sense of humor and his distinguished handlebar moustache, Mr. zum Brunnen was born Sept. 23, 1923, the son of Thomas Park zum Brunnen Sr. and Veda Mae Beaver zum Brunnen of Salisbury.

After graduation from Boyden, now Salisbury High School, he briefly attended Catawba College and then The Citadel.

He joined the U.S. armed forces in 1942 and served in the European theatre of operations. Some of the letters he wrote to his parents, ran in The Post and described the atrocities his regiment discovered in two German death camps of northern Germany.

After the war he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was elected speaker for the University’s Philanthropic Assembly and Dialectic Senate.

He continued the long-established family business, a CPA firm with a client list that covered the state and the East Coast. In addition, he taught courses in business at Catawba College and Rowan Community College among other area schools.

He was an active Jaycee, a member of the Salisbury-Rowan Chamber of Commerce and a long-time member of Salisbury’s Rotary Club, which he served as treasurer for many years..

He was also involved in almost every aspect of the area’s cultural life. He was instrumental in the start-up of several area cultural organizations including-the Salisbury/Rowan Historical Foundation, the Salisbury/Rowan Symphony, Piedmont Players Theater and was a member of the Harold B. Jarrett Post No. 342 of the American Legion.

He was recently recognized for his work with the Historical Foundation.

As a young president of the Rowan County Jaycees, he coordinated the transition of the Rowan County Fair from its previous location to the current site, the Rowan County Fairgrounds. He also served as treasurer and financial advisor for the Salisbury Country Club.

He served as treasurer for the Democrats of Rowan County for several years and as a precinct activist.

He was active with the N.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants (NC-CPA).

An active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church since childhood, he served as treasurer, a vestry member, and lay-reader. The church’s vestry deemed him “treasurer emeritus.” in recognition for his and his family’s many years of service to St. Luke’s.

Upon his recent retirement, he took up many of his favorite passions — traveling with his wife, working with the Master Gardener’s program, building blue-bird houses, and continuing his work on his own gardens.

Survivors include his wife Betty Jean Wagoner zum Brunnen of the home; daughter Elizabeth Jeanne Stone of New Hill; son, Chester David zum Brunnen Jr. of Chatham County; sisters Veda Irene Purcell of Salisbury and Mary Helen Bach of New Bern; brother, the Rev. Richard I. zum Brunnen of Churchville, Md.
