James Milfred Butler

ROCKWELL — James Milfred Butler, 51, died Saturday (April 8, 2000) at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born April 25, 1948 in Port St. Joe, Fla., he was a son of Milfred Butler of Apalachicola, Fla., and the late Annie Mae Golden Butler.

A cook and security guard, he was a graduate of Chapman High School, Apalachicola, and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Butler was a member of Organ Lutheran Church, the Saints and Sinners Sunday School Class, and a former member and president of the Apalachicola Jaycees.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Bost Butler, whom he married April 25, 1987; son James Butler of the home; daughter Catherine Ann Coulter, Eastpoint, Fla., step-daughters Mary Bost Kimmer, Charlotte, and Rebecca Loflin, of the home; brother Dennis Isaac Butler, Jasper, Ga.; sister Susan Butler Segree, Vicksburg, Miss.; one grandchild and four step-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Organ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John E. Pless, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Scott, pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Apalachicola. Burial, Organ Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Memorials: Organ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 1515 Organ Church Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

 

Mrs. ‘Colleen’ Gareau

SPENCER — Katherine “Colleen” Hudson Gareau, 73, 1404 S. Salisbury Ave., formerly of Kannapolis, died Saturday (April 8, 2000) at Spencer Residential Care.

Born Nov. 28, 1926, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Zelma Gosnell Hudson and Rufus Franklin Hudson.

A homemaker, she was a graduate of Cabarrus County Schools and attended Rowan Technical College and Davidson Community College.

She attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kannapolis, where she was active in the Ladies’ Guild. She was a volunteer at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Her husband, Florian Joseph Gareau, died April 1, 1972.

Survivors include sons Phillip Gareau, Virginia Beach, Va., Joseph Gareau, Kannapolis, and Michael Gareau, San Bernadino, Calif.; daughter Patsy G. Duncan, Spencer; brothers Harold Hudson, Bill Hudson, and Hoyle Hudson, all of Kannapolis, Milton Hudson, Faith, Edward Hudson, Landis, and Danny Hudson, Salisbury; sisters Sue Buffalino, San Antonio, Texas, and Peggy Sams, Salisbury; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by Father Karl Aschmann of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial, National Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: St. James Catholic Church Building Fund, 25 Elm Ave. N.W. , Concord, N.C. 28025.

 

Mary Harwood

MOUNT PLEASANT — Mary Esther Dick Harwood, 69, 16603 Capra Lane, Mount Pleasant, died Saturday (April 8, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 14, 1930 in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Laverna Carr Dick and Eddie Monroe Dick.

Mrs. Harwood was a member of Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was a security guard at Corning.

Survivors include her husband, Hurley Lonzo Harwood, Mount Pleasant; sons Phillip Anthony Harwood, Joey Hurley Harwood, Randy Lee Harwood and Matthew Alan Harwood, all of Mount Pleasant; daughter Linda Harwood Johnson, Albemarle; stepson Larry James Harwood, Mount Pleasant; brothers Ishmael Dick and Herman Dick, both of Albemarle, Elmer Dick, Atlanta; sisters Annie D. Harwood, Wadesboro, and Edna Mae D. Epps, New London; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, the Rev. George Truett Stallings and the Rev. Bobby Blake. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home.

 

Edmar Allison Mitchell

BADIN — Edmar Allison Mitchell, 72, Badin, died Saturday (April 8, 2000) after a lengthy illness.

Born Dec. 24, 1908, in Bristol, Va., Mrs. Mitchell was the daughter of Hettie Callaham and Charles Edward Allison.

After attending Virginia Intermont College, she came to Badin in 1928 to teach.

Mrs. Mitchell taught at Badin Elementary School and for many years was the town’s librarian. She also held many positions at Badin’s First Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, James White Mitchell, died in 1957.

Services: Graveside, Fairview Memorial Park. Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, in charge.
