Ruth Parrish Brown

Ruth Parrish Brown, 86, Matthews, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at Carrington Place, Matthews.

James Lester Chamberlain

CONCORD — James Lester Chamberlain, 71, 3126-A Chapwin Circle, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 24, 1928, in Iredell County, Mr. Chamberlain was a son of the late Charles L. and Clara Floyd Chamberlain. He was employed for many years by the former Upright Construction Co. in Kannapolis.

Mr. Chamberlain was a member of God’s Church of Faith, Kannapolis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army’s Airborne Division.

Survivors include wife Shelby Kluttz Chamberlain; daughters Rebecca Hurst, Garden City, S.C., Jenny Chamberlain, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Sherry Harris, Salisbury; sister Rachel Sell, Salisbury; stepsons Ricky Helms, Concord, Rodney Helms, New Orleans, and Jimmy Helms, Texas; stepdaughter Rena Hooks, Concord; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, God’s Church of Faith, Kannapolis, conducted by the Jeff Upright.

Visitation: None.

Marvin Pierce Clark

The funeral will be Saturday for Marvin Pierce Clark, 85, 225 Douglas St., who died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center.

Born July 29, 1914, in Avera, Ga., Mr. Clark was a son of the late Lee W. and Mae LaFavor Clark. He was educated in the Glascock County (Ga.) schools.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army’s 121st Infantry Regiment and was cited for extraordinary heroism in the Normandy invasion. He also served in Central Europe and the Rhineland.

He had retired as a nursing assistant at the Hefner VAMedical Center. An amateur radio operator, he was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFWPost 3006.

Survivors include wife Margarete Hagenfeld Clark; sons Marvin H.L. Clark, Lexington, and Edward J. Clark, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Tim (Gisela)Loflin, Salisbury, and Mrs. Jim (Margarete Shepherd)Peeler, Lexington; brothers Troy Clark, Avera, Ga., and Roy Clark, Waycross, Ga.; sister Lela Williams, Stapleton,Ga.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Eric Disher, Lexington Community Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Haywood Hilton Dutch, 56, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at NorthEast MedicalCenter, Concord.

Benton Avon Glover, 84, Salisbury, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Beatrice Allman Graham

KANNAPOLIS — Beatrice Allman Graham, 86, Big Elm Retirement Center, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at the center.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Mattox Haynes Kluttz

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Mattox Haynes Kluttz, 85, The Meadows Retirement Center, who died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 11, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of the late Moses Alexander and Roxie Lingle Kluttz. A 1932 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was a former manager of Grimes Mills and a former employee of the Armour Co.

He was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church, Salisbury, and its Men’s Bible Class.

His wife, Mable Rogers Kluttz, died July 5, 1997.

Survivors include sons Richard R. Kluttz, Salisbury, and Jimmy H. Kluttz, Cummings, Ga.; daughter Saundra K. Fesperman, Granite Quarry; brother Moses Lingle Kluttz, Salisbury; sister Bright K. Crowell, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Christiana Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Carl Haynes. Burial, church cemetery.

Mary Mock Kneeburg

Mary Frances Mock Kneeburg, 88, formerly of West Colonial Drive and Trinity Oaks, died Friday (April 7, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after several years of declining health.

Born Aug. 28, 1911, in Spencer, Mrs. Kneeburg was a daughter of the late Charles Lonwell and Lula Carter Mock. Educated in the Spencer schools, she was employed for a number of years in the chief clerk’s office at Southern Railway in Spencer. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Women of the Church.

Her husband, Charles Edwin Kneeburg, died Feb. 2, 1976.

Survivors include son Charles Edwin Kneeburg Jr., Midland; daughter Mrs. Robert Henry (Carolyn) Owens Jr., Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. John’s Lutheran Church Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Carl R. Sachtleben. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Cletus Monroe Lowder

ALBEMARLE — Cletus Monroe Lowder, 88, 21065 Austin Road, died Wednesday (April 5, 2000).

Born Feb. 2, 1912, in Stanly County, Mr. Lowder was a son of the late Henry and Eunice Hatley Lowder. He had been employed at American and Efird Mills.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the European and African theatres and took part in the Normandy invasion.

Survivors include wife Dora Stutts Lowder; son Michael Lowder, Albemarle; daughter Rita Helms, Albemarle; brother Raymond Lowder, Albemarle; and three grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield and the Rev. Ken Gibson. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Austin Road.

 

Rev. Walter G. Peeler

The Rev. Walter Gray Peeler, 83, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Helen Davis Sides

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Saturday for Helen Davis Sides, 75, Rockwell, who died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after 2 1/2 years of declining health.

Born Aug. 2, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Sides was a daughter of the late James Walter and Gaye Eller Davis. A 1941 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she also attended Salisbury Business College.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was also a member and a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Rockwell.

Survivors include husband Brown Julian Sides, whom she married Dec. 7, 1945; sons Julian M. and Joe D. Sides, both of Rockwell; sister Mildred Shuping, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, St. James Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.Craig Sigmon. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 12:30-1:45 p.m. Saturday at the church.

James Ernest Sorrow

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for James Ernest Sorrow, 90, 9061 Sorrow Farm Road, who died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 8, 1909, in Madison County, Ga., Mr. Sorrow was a son of the late James William and Susie Mae Lord Sorrow. He had retired in 1974 after 54 years with Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1, where he worked mostly in the bleachery department. A member of Lakewood Baptist Church, he was a former deacon.

His wife, Mary Edith Rivers Sorrow, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons James Elliott Sorrow, Kannapolis, and Jack Stephen Sorrow, Landis; daughters Mary Ann Sager and Janet S. Brooks, Kannapolis, and Patricia Green, Coral Springs, Fla.; sister Flora Smith, Kannapolis; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lakewood Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Howard. Entombment, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Sam Felix Burris

OAKBORO — Sam Felix Burris, 87, 16067 Big Lick Road, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born March 4, 1913, in Stanly County, Mr. Burris was a son of the late Jackson and Nellie C. Burris. He was a U.S. military veteran. A member of Big Lick Baptist Church, he worked for the N.C. Highway Department before his retirement.

His wife, Ruby Lydiabell Green Burris, died Sept. 26, 1999.

Survivors include son Donny Burris, Oakboro; daughter Linda B. Clontz, Albemarle; brothers Bob and Rayon Burris; sisters Laura Smith and Maggie Thompson; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Big Lick Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Farrell Shimpock. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of grandson Jeremy Lane Efird, 16063 Big Lick Road.
