Celia Thomas Alexander

Celia Thomas Alexander, 77, of Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Salisbury, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at the center.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Liberty Hills, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Dock and Janie Peay Thomas. Educated in the Liberty Hills public schools, she was a domestic worker.

She is survived by a brother, Hilbert Thomas, Salisbury.

The body will be cremated. No service or visitation will be held.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

Philip Jennings Bottoms

Philip Jennings Bottoms, 55, 201 Rudolph Road, died Tuesday (April 4, 2000) at his home after a two year battle with lung cancer.

Born Oct. 2, 1944, in Richmond, Va., Mr. Bottoms was a son of Blanche Bottoms, Midlothian, Va., and the late Ellis O. Bottoms.

He had practiced law in Salisbury since 1984, having received his juris doctor from Wake Forest University in 1980. He also held a masters in counseling from Wake Forest University.

In 1971, he received a masters of divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, and in 1968 earned a bachelor of arts at the University of Richmond, Richmond, Va.

Mr. Bottoms was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for many years and had served as chairman. He was church moderator for over 10 years, taught Sunday school and served on numerous committees and projects for the church.

Mr. Bottoms helped begin the Men’s Prayer Breakfast many years ago and was active in the Rowan Baptist Association. Moderator of the Association for two years, he devoted much time to promoting the rights of developmentally disabled individuals by working to enhance their quality of life and living environment.

Survivors include wife Gwyn Lynette Pell Bottoms, whom he married June 7, 1970; daughters Katelyn Gwyn Bottoms, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; brother William E. Bottoms, Richmond,Va.; and sister Mrs. Lewis C. Vasser, Powhatan, Va.

Services: Celebration of Life service, 2 p.m. Friday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Bragg of Salisbury and the Rev. Dr. Joel Jenkins of Charlottesville, Va. Individuals associated with the court system will sit in designated pews. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Rudolph Road.

Judy Long Bringle

Judy Long Bringle, 53, of 800 E. Liberty St., died Saturday (April 1, 2000) near Siler City from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Annie Lee Meeks Brooks

KANNAPOLIS — Annie Lee Meeks Brooks, 81, Helen Street, died Tuesday (April 4, 2000) at her home after six months of declining health.

Born June 27, 1918, in Anson County, Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late William Henry and Flora Johnson Meeks. In her earlier years, she was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1. She retired in 1973 after many years with J.C. Penney Co., Kannapolis.

She was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, where she was in the Virginia Dayvault Sunday school class and the Jet Set Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include sons the Rev. Marshall Brooks Jr. and Bobby G. Brooks, both of Kannapolis; daughters Dian Downer, Kannapolis, and Reba Thornton, Richmond,Va.; sisters Jane Deal, Kannapolis, and Dot Bostian, Charlotte; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Autry. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Mary Ann Calkins

KANNAPOLIS — Four-month- old Mary Ann Calkins, daughter of Michael Scott and Leann Marie Sutter Calkins of 2123 Lane Street, died Monday (April 3, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

She was born Nov. 19, 1999, in Cabarrus County.

Survivors in addition to her parents include sisters Cindy Marie and Patricia Marie Calkins, both of the home; maternal grandparents Richard Neil and Patricia Ann Watson Sutter, Canby, Ore.; paternal grandparents Michael Kevin and Cindy Lou Anthony, Kannapolis; and paternal great-grandfather Charles Glenn Calkins, Landis.

Services: 8:30 p.m. today, Colonial Chapel of Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

GRANITE QUARRY— The funeral will be Friday for George Thomas “Peter Gun Rabbit” Carrington Jr., 55, 212 Pine St., who died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, White Rock AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. William Gullick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home on Pine Drive.

Carmel Lavoie Cloutier

Carmel Lavoie Cloutier, 66, 126 Gough Ave., West Warwick, R.I., died Tuesday (April 4, 2000) while visiting her son, David Cloutier, Salisbury.

Visitation and services will be held in West Warwick, R.I.

Joseph Bryce Collins

ROCKWELL — Joseph Bryce Collins, 19-day-old infant son of Marc Christopher Ritchie and Donna Ann MIshak Collins of Rockwell, died Monday (April 3, 2000) at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill. The infant had been ill since his birth on March 16, 2000, in Orange County.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include paternal grandparents Joseph and Ann Collins, Salisbury; paternal great-grandparents Wright Ritchie,Salisbury, and Alda Collins, Lillington; and maternal grandparents Conard and Shirley MIshak, China Grove.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Craig Edwards, pastor, New Hope Baptist Church, Salisbury.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of Joseph and Ann Collins of Salisbury.

Joseph Fredrick Goodnight

Funeral services were to be held this morning for Joseph Frederick Goodnight, 89, Salisbury, who died Monday (April 3, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born March 20, 1911, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodnight was a son of the late Edwin Lee and Ellen Cress Goodnight. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was employed with Salisbury Marble and Granite Co. earlier in his life. He later owned and operated Central Cash Grocery on N.C. 150. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

A daughter, Betty Jo Smith Walker, died in June 1997.

Survivors include wife Ada Shuping Goodnight, whom he married in June 1934; daughters Mary Newcombe,Charlotte, and Nellie Wagoner, Greenville, S.C.; sisters Allie Shulenburger, Salisbury, and Frances Bianchi, Alexandria, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were to be held at 11 this morning at Bethel Lutheran Church cemetery, to be officiated by the Rev. Mark S. Reed.

Lottie Ann Krider

The funeral will be held Friday for Lottie Ann Mack Krider, 61, of 1424 Squirrel Hill Road, Charlotte, who died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at University Medical Hospital.

Born July 26, 1938, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Edna Oglesby Mack. A graduate of Dunbar High school, she was owner of Carolina Transport service and Krider Janitorial Service. She was a member of Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Charlotte.

A son, Tony Michael “Mike” Krider, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Roosevelt Krider; daughters Pamela Krider West and Karen Krider Stinson, both of Charlotte; sister Loretta “Boots” Mack Taylor, Bronx, N. Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. George Cook Jr, pastor. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 12-1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Roy Lankford

LEXINGTON — Roy Lankford, 57, 907 N. Salisbury St., died Monday (April 3, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Jan. 7, 1943, in Surry County, Mr. Lankford was a son of the late Cornelius and Mamie Beatrice Childress Lankford. Of the Baptist faith, he was a self-employed carpenter.

Survivors include sons Roy Michael Lankford, Lexington, and Christopher Bryan Lankford, Southmont; sisters Velma Darnell, Elkin, Betty Tilley, Winston-Salem, Jean Coe and Una Holleyfield, both of Dobson, and Louise House and Margie Wall, both of Lexington; and brothers Robert Lankford, Sparta, and Troy Lankford, Lexington.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jason Cable and Chaplain Roy Ward. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Salisbury Street or at 313 Foy Ave.

Mary Ann McDaniel

The funeral will be Thursday for Mary Ann McDaniel, 79, formerly of Parkview Circle, died Tuesday (April 4, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after three years of declining health.

Born Aug. 20, 1920, in Rowan County, Miss McDaniel was a daughter of the late Captain Douglas and Mollie Russell McDaniel. A graduate of Boyden High School, she had been employed at Cannon Mills for 26 years and later retired after 10 years from PPG. She was a member of Stallings Baptist Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts.

Visitation: 10-10:45 a.m., Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Annie Milam Rogers

KANNAPOLIS — Annie Milam Rogers, 90, 214 S. East Ave., died Tuesday (April 4, 2000) at Brian Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 10, 1909, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Juitt Lester and Oma Foster Milam. She was educated in the Wilkes County schools and had retired after 50 years from Cannon Mills.

Her husband, William Bryant Rogers, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Annie “Mickie” R. Seymour, China Grove, Phyllis R. Castor, Rockwell, and Bobbie R. Hahn, Charlotte; brothers Fred and Bill Milam, both of Kannapolis; sisters Delia Garmon and Nawatha Turner, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Georgia Moore, Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. James Faggart. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-2:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

Eloise Kerns Tabor

Eloise Kerns Tabor, 65, of 120 Tabor Drive, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born July 30, 1934, in Randolph County, Mrs. Tabor was a daughter of the late William Augustus and Magdalene Hill Kerns. A graduate of William Penn High School, High Point, she was a certified nurses’ assistant. She was a member of Ardis Chapel AME Zion Church, a former class leader, and a member of the deaconess board, missionary, and Sunday school scholar.

Her husband, Thomas Guy Tabor, died on Feb. 10, 1989.

Survivors include sons Thomas Tabor of the home and Ronnie Tabor, Pemberton, N. J.; daughters Beverly Tabor and Valina Blakeney, both of Salisbury, and Ellajean Smith, Charlotte; sister Peggy Jean Gray, Trinity; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Ardis Chapel AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Anthony Freeman, pastor.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Jewel Stutts Walton

SPENCER — Jewel Stutts Walton, 75, Spencer, died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,Salisbury.
