George T. Carrington Jr.

GRANITE QUARRY — George Thomas Carrington Jr., 55, 212 Pine Drive, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 18, 1944, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of George T. and Pauline Tuck Carrington. Educated in the Halifax County (Va.) schools, he was employed by Earnhardt Lumber Co. for 25 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Florence Polk Carrington, whom he married 27 years ago; brother Harold Ray Carrington, South Boston, Va.; and sisters Odell Carrington, Carolyn C. Barnett and Louella C. Yancey, all of South Boston, Va., and Paula C. Burrell, Temple Hills, Md.

The family will be at the home on Pine Drive.

Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

Celia Alexander

Celia Alexander, 77, Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at the nursing center.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Anna Thompson Barbee

ALBEMARLE — Anna Faye Thompson Barbee, 78, 741 Efird St., died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Stanly County, Mrs. Barbee was a daughter of the late William Luther and Gennie Talbert Thompson. A Baptist, she had retired from Albemarle Spinning Mill.

Survivors include husband Mark E. Barbee; daughter Mrs. Gerald Boyd (Brenda) Ingold, Albemarle; and one grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Helms. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Lillie P. Crainshaw

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral is today for Lillie Patton Crainshaw, 94, Five Oaks Nursing Center, formerly of Sharon Street, who died Saturday(April 1, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Feb. 26, 1906, in Danielsville, Ga., Mrs. Crainshaw was a daughter of the late James and Susan Patton. She had retired from Cannon Mills’ washcloth department after 49 years with the company.

Her husband, whom she married in 1928, Joe Fink Crainshaw, died in 1975. A daughter, Joyce Misenheimer, died in 1999.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Dwight (Jolene)Harwell, Concord; son Jerry Crainshaw, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 today, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by a granddaughter, the Rev. Dr. Jill Crainshaw. Burial, Mount Olivet United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30-3:30 today at the funeral home.

 

Rufus M. Frost

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Tuesday for Rufus M. Frost, 84, U.S. 64 West, who died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Kate B.Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

A native of Davie County, Mr. Frost had retired from Dixie Furniture Co., Lexington. He was a member of Piney Grove AMEZion Church.

Survivors include son Hugh M. Frost, of the home; daughter Willie Rebecca Frost, of the home; and brother Arthur Frost, Charlotte.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Piney Grove AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Reginald Eldridge. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Gretchen Jones Griffin

ALBEMARLE — The funeral is today for Gretchen Virginia Jones Griffin, 79, 400 Sherwood Forrest Road, Winston-Salem, formerly of Albemarle, who died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 25, 1920, in Bethel, Mrs. Griffin was a daughter of the late John Davis and Elizabeth Leona BullockJones. A homemaker, she was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church, Winston-Salem.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Freddie M. Griffin; a son, Dr. Andrew “Andy” Griffin, Winston-Salem; a daughter, Constance “Connie” Griffin, Winston-Salem; stepbrothers Robert May, Lewisburg, and William May, Norfolk, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. today, Stanly Gardens of Memory, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald.

Visitation: 11:30-1:30 today, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Stacey Lynn Holshouser

CHINA GROVE — Stacey Lynn Holshouser, 17, 137 Second Ave., died Saturday (April 1, 2000) in Gaston County.

Helen Frye Kirk

MOORESVILLE — HelenFrye Kirk, 81, Mount Ulla Highway, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Retirement,Mooresville.

Born Oct. 22, 1918, in Iredell County, Mrs. Fink was a daughter of the late George Bonson and Katherine Young Frye. She had retired as a weaver at Burlington Industries. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Spencer R. Kirk, whom she married in April 1937; daughter Caroline K. Sammet; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Cavin Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John Saunders. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Freddie Lee Lanier

MOCKSVILLE —Freddie Lee Lanier, 85, White Road, King, died Monday (April 3, 2000) at Scenic View Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Carlie Lee Myers

ADVANCE — Carlie Lee Myers, 67, Griffith Road, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Forsyth MedicalCenter, Winston-Salem.

Born April 13, 1932, in Davie County, Mr. Myers was a son of the late Carl and Reba Howard Myers. A brick mason with Ray Carter Construction Co., he had also worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation at the Interstate 40 rest area in Davie County.

He was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include wife Jean Carter Myers; son Larry Lee Myers, Advance; brother Herbert Franklin Myers, South Carolina; and sister Nell Myers Allen, Wyo community, Davie County.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock. Burial, Green Meadows Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.

Ray Junior O’Neal

WOODLEAF — The funeral will be Tuesday for Ray Junior O’Neal, 55, Needmore Road, who died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at his home.

Born April 7, 1944, in Iredell County, Mr. O’Neal was a son of Ray H. O’Neal, Mocksville, and the late Mattie Cloer O’Neal. A member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, he had worked as a detailer with Freightliner, Cleveland. He had also worked at Seaford Lumber, Heritage Furniture, Ingersol Rand and Morgan Door.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Brenda Waller O’Neal; sons Doug, Dean and Tim O’Neal, all of Mocksville, and Barry O’Neal, Salisbury; daughters Wendy Meadows, Mount Ulla, and Amy Link, Rockwell; stepson Jerry Wayne Seamon, Love Valley; stepdaughter Brenda Byrd, Statesville; brothers Henry Thomas, Paul Franklin and Larry Eugene O’Neal, all of Mocksville; sisters Patsy Sue Prevette, Jane Gaither and Linda Hatfield, all of Harmony, and Penny Ann Mullis, Yadkinville; three grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m.Tuesday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. JimGryder. Burial, Society Baptist Church cemetery.

Connie Moore Ratliff, 77, 360 Holly Ave., died Sunday (April 2, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Eloise Kerns Tabor, 65, 120 Tabor Drive, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Ollie Bell Pethel Young

Ollie Bell Pethel Young, 94, Salisbury, died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born Aug. 15, 1905, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Young was a daughter of the late Sloan Henderson and Effie Schenk Pethel. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Yadkin United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Spencer Golden Age Club.

Her husband, Clyde Eugene Young, died Aug. 6, 1987.

Survivors include sons Wilbur S. and Wilton E. Young, both of Salisbury; daughter Louva Young Daniel,St. Pauls; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday,Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fred Hill, pastor, Yadkin Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Callie Lingle Smith

LANDIS — Callie Lingle Fink Smith, 86, 804 S. Main St., died Sunday (April 2, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after an illness of a month.

Born April 12, 1913, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late William Luther and Lugusta Goodman Fink. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, she received a degree in nursing from a Statesville school.

She and her husband owned and operated Smith Grocery in Landis for 25 years. Mrs. Smith then worked in the lab at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1981.

She served as organist for 40 years at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Gideons Auxiliary.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Graham L. Smith.

Services: 10:30 a.m Tuesday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Barry N. Sutton. Burial in Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis. At other times the family will be at the home on South Main Street.

Lela Leonard Snyder

LEXINGTON — Lela Leonard Synder, 80, 3181 W. Old Highway 64, died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1919, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Cora Belle Beck Leonard. Retired from Parkdale Mills, (formerly Erlanger Mills), she was a member of Beck’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, John J. Snyder, died in May 1985.

Survivors include son Charles L. Snyder of the home; and sisters Becky Comer and Faye Leonard, both of Lexington, and Geraldine Garner, Dillon, S. C.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Beck’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. David Huddle. Burial in church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.
